Default a long ride from thiruvananthapuram to bangalore on my ninja

After saddle sore during Jan 2012,my ninja was taking a breather. Also my hero impulse added to my ninjas rest. My ninja was never a commuter for me. She was special. For those purposeful rides where I enjoyed the machine as much as my trip. My impulse chipped in as my commuter bike for those daily rides to office and gave much needed rest to my maruthi 800 who was dutifully taking me to office till then.
My home town and capital city of gods own country Thiruvananthapuram is not exactly a bike friendly city. Reckless riding by many bikers has put police on red alert and almost all the good roads are watched for speeding 24/7 and Ninja looks like speeding to them even at a sedate 60 kmph. So my bike is like a bullet trotting at something like 50 kmph when she can do 150 kmph+ on the right road. If at all I have to put my bike at ease it has to be on a highway. So there was a chance to do a long ride as my better half had to make a trip to Bangalore and I agreed to tag along. The condition was I ride one way and on return she rides pillion on the bike. That agreed I did the trip preparation. Ninja had completed her 3rd service and got a new set of front and rear brake pads. Did a couple of rides and generally felt satisfied with the bike. In fact I had told the mechanic murugan at PBK that I have to do a banglore ride and do the service accordingly. I also insisted he test ride the bike before I take delivery. So the d day was 24th july2012. The plan was to start early morning at 5-00 am and hit the highway 100 kms away by 7-00 pm. So my better half on 23rd proceeded to banglore, I was planning mentally as what all was to be tucked in on the bike. Additional helmet and some seat padding for the rear seat if my wife decides to join me on the ride back, puncture kit, foot pump and some tools, eating stuff, extra cell phone ,torch bike papers, and forgot to take the spare key which I should have. Was mentally prepared to ride in the rain as it was raining for the past few days.

the stop and photos at this place has become routine. the shots while going to bangalore

So on 23rd july 12, took ninja and filled up the tank with speed petrol and came back home. The next filling would be at Madurai about 300 kms away. Put the alarm on my cell phone and tried to sleep, but could not. Sleep was not coming and finally dozed off. Fortunately some mistake in setting the alarm(all credit to my windows phone) I was sleeping like a log till 5-30 am. Okay got up late had to hurry up and was good to go at 6-30 am. Strapped up the ninja and started rolling towards Bangalore. The 100 kms till the highway NH 4, is going to be a pain with broken roads, and unruly traffic etc etc. so finally hit the high way by 8-15 am. Now to fight the winds and ensure that I keep a steady direction and also not put too much of strain on my neck by trying to push the bike to the limits cutting the wind. Was adjusting my ride with the wind force and direction and felt comfortable . so on the first straight I tried to do the first ripping. At 90 kmph down shifted twice and rolled the throttle to the max and me tucked in it was go. With a howling wind the best she could come up was about 145 kmph+ and I eased off as the turn came up. One has to be extra cautious on turns especially with a very strong cross wind.madurai came up and best I could manage was about 145kmph+.

you can see a plaster over my index finger knuckle. silencer burn

Had a big break, bike again topped up with speed petrol I had some chappathis and curry as my early lunch from the Bharath petroleum dhaba. After filling up petrol, I rolled the bike and put the side stand my tank bag came off. In a hurry I tried to hold the bag and suddenly my hand touched the rear of the silencer and squish my left index finger knuckle was burned. I cursed my self for not being careful and was thinking how to salvage the situation. Without some patch up it will be difficult to put the gloves on and ride. So trusted old remedy came to my mind. toothpaste I had a small cream paste in my bag ( not the gel one ) took it out and applied it liberally on the burn and ate my chappathi . mean while the paste dried up and I put a piece of 3M paper plaster on top and presto gloves on top and I was good to go. After this had some good stretches where wind was tolerable and was able pull out some good speeds and a couple of times maxing out at 160 kph + by the time the turns came up and I had to close throttle. I was satisfied that the bike is very much in tune at the blistering speeds at which I was pushing the bike.

Crossed salem and next pit stop was at BP pump and dhaba at thoppur immediately after the Thoppur toll. Again filled up speed petrol and took a break. Took out some snacks in my bag and had a diet pepsi and just relaxed for some time. Bangalore was still some distance away. Now to hit krishnagiri,Hosur and then Bangalore. After krishnagiri there was increase in road traffic and also the roads were being widened. So sedeate speeds and finally reached the elevated expressway toll. Paid the toll and again was caught in traffic as there was some block on the toll way. Finally inching my way through I reached my location. Really hated the traffic as it was painful to ride clutch brake style after doing more than 730+ kms. The climate was bright and sunny and hot. Had a lot of mini breaks and took lots of water to keep my body hydrated. One break every 150 to 200 kms was the norm I have set for this ride. I was happy that I could reach Bangalore without much body ache and less neck pain.

ninja relaxes at our guest house at koramangala before the return ride to thiruvananthapuram

So 2 days and I was ready to return. On inspection I found that the chain was dry and regretted my decision not to carry the oil. Finally got one can of chain lube and did a good lube by moving the bike. My wife had to carry some extra luggage and now we had decided that she will come back by bus and I ride the bike back to thiruvananthapuram. So on the second day early morning took the ninja out and filled petrol and came back to the guest house. Mentally was prepared to ride back and start early morning at 6-00 am next day. Got up at 5-00 am and with help of my wife strapped the luggage etc on my ninja and It was ta ta from her at 6-15 am and I was on my way back to thiruvananthapuram. Cool air was good and I was having my cramster jacket and pants on as usual with the jacket having the rain liner on. On my breakfast break I planned to remove the jacket liner and change my helmet visor to dark one. Enroute one pulsar was very keen to show me how the bike is better than the ninja. I normally ignore such overtures and carry on. But this was NH 4 highway and after some time I got fed up so just down shifted and shot past him and after that he was not very keen on any further demos. Reached thoppur filled up ninja and said hello to 2 riders on their bullets who were riding from salem to yelagiri. Had breakfast changed the helmet visor and rain liner from the jacket and was good to go towards Madurai.

Good sunny weather and ninja cruising at 90+ kms is an absolute bliss. No vibration, hardly much sound either and its something like you are flying. All this comfort brought about another danger thats sleep. Was feeling like dozing off inside the helmet. Time to wake up I told myself and fortunately came on a straight stretch of road. Shifted from 6th to 4th gear and it was swish.. with throttle locked on full me tucked down felt like the rest of the traffic was standing still all my sleep vanished with my bike clocking 155+ ( the luxury of looking at the speedo frequently was not there as I had to keep my eyes fully on the road ahead) and with another 80 kms to go before Madurai decided to stop and eat some fruits my wife has packed for me. Suddenly saw a small shade pulled in my ninja little firmly. Before the bike stopped she skidded and came out side the road and stopped. Whew lucky that I did not drop the bike. Then I got down and checked the road there was a round patch of dried oil on the road. Lucky me, but these are the hazards for any biker and I better face it and learn to live with it. Had my fruits shaken not stirred to quote james bond 007. After that reached Madurai for the next refill of petrol and my stomach. Had some chapathis and was good to go in about 30 minutes. Fighting the winds crossed thirunelveli and reached mahendragiri where I had to get out of NH 4 to the State highway to thiruvananthapuram.

it was difficult to imagine wild fruits by the way side at this place , but yes i lovingly clicked them and left them the way it was

Finally at 5-15 pm reached home after riding for about 11 hours and covering 735 kms. Phoned up my wife and told that I am home thanked almighty and my bike for the ride and had a cup of tea prepared by my mother in law it was another ride concluded.
I hope at least some of you enjoys this ride of mine. The idea of writing this story is simply to contribute what I can to Xbhp as I myself has taken a lot from all of you who has painfully taken time and penned down your riding stories.

Nice 'solo' ride. I guess sometimes just you, the bike and the wide open road, itself is biking nirvana...BTW, on long rides down south do you have tender coconut water on the highway. I find it very rejuvenating.

    Ride safe.

Nice ride there as usual Hari ! Your Ninja is really an awesome bike. Me and a couple of friends had driven down to Kochi last month to attend a function, really missed my bike.
BTW, if I had known you would be in Bangalore it would have been a pleasure to meet you at least briefly Maybe next time.
Glad that your back is fine again after a slight mishap some time back. It's great to see you back on the highway

Always a pleasure to read your travelogue .. People like you give a lot of insight into how to prepare for long rides... the 3M plaster wouldn't be something I would pack on any ride.. looks like I have a long way to go in getting prepared for a ride.. I am just buying things like bungee cord, puncture kit, a separate helmet for tours, etc... Guess I'll have to make a list and prioritize before doing any kind of trips.... Thanks for all the knowledge you share out here..
