Day 3: Dhankar Lahlung Lingti Kaza Langza Kaza

We woke up as early as 5.30 to reach Dhankar lake as early as possible. Minor effects of altitude which were showing its effect last day were almost gone. Sandeep had already left for camping at Dhankar last evening and we were supposed to come back with him only. Later we came to know that he couldnt make proper use of his tent as some of the pins were missing, though he managed to utilize few logs lying around and prepared a shelter.
It took another first half of our second hour along the ascend which took us from 3800 mts to 4200 mts of elevation in a span of a distance which is somewhat less than 3 kms.
First reaction of wifey: ye lake hai? isse bada to talaab hota hai (is this a lake? even a pond is bigger than this). All I could react was just a smile.
The lake is considerably large but I could make out that almost half of the usual area was dried; hence it was not that pleasing to her, though I found it beautiful in my own perceptions. even more, its green water. Though the overcasted weather made sure that I dont get better pictures of the location.
We took a quick round of it while Sandeep packed his stuff and headed back towards Dhankar which followed by a visit to ancient Dhankar Monastery. Many of us have already visited this strange architecture, yet I would like to mention that this three storied building built over the cliff of the mountains made of not so strong soil, is slightly older than a thousand year. It comprises of meditation cave, small prayer rooms, and a beautiful courtyard on upper floor. One can climb onto the roof and enjoy the panoramic beauty of the nearby ranges with Pin River contributing to Spiti River at one side.
Along with this it has many other small rooms, not sure what it is meant for. Personally I found this structure very interesting and would highly recommend for architecture loving guys.
Later we headed towards Lahlung village through the thin descending graveled path. The village has another ancient monastery having sculptures inspired by Tabo monastery. Now let me tell you that Tabo monastery has 33 sculptures hanging erected out of its long walls. Each one of these is meant for some God/Goddess along with fine paintings in bright colors over all the walls and ceiling. Tabo is some 1016 years old which makes to wonder and praise the talent of its artists.
Lahlung has the similar sculptures though smaller in scale. All the three i.e. Tabo, Dhankar and Lahlung have their unique point of attractions.
After all this gyan, lets move on to Kaza through crossing the Lingti River bridge at Lahlung and riding along the right bank of this little explored route which joins Kaza route near Lingti village.

After the lunch break at Kaza Sandeep left to Kibber for his trek to Kanamo peak and we for Langza. Langza is such a calm and beautiful place. Personally I found Chandrataal and Langza to be the most beautiful in entire Spiti. Unlike my last visit, Langza was not as green as I expected, because of lesser showers this year.
Initially I had planned to stay at Langza and visit Kaumic next morning and then to Chandrataal, but plan was changed when wifey didnt like the loneliness of the village So we skipped Kaumik and came back to Kaza for night halt.

View through the small windows of the rooms of Dhankar Monastery was to die for:

These landscapes on the way to Lajlung from Dhankar reminded me of the sand dunes of Jaisalmer, though I have never been to Rajasthan

    Good Evening Langza:

So far the bike was doing ok, but I knew that its not well from within. The next morning Ill have to get it serviced and replace the rear brake shoes and then move towards Chandrataal. But what is fun if everything goes planned. Till then have a sound sleep.

    Day 4, Kaza-Losar:
Next morning, we woke up lazily as the mechanic would be available by 8.30 and so was the shopkeeper who would provide me break shoe and engine oil. Ya ya I know you are wandering why any himachali would open his shop so early . This was their official time not actual one. Actual time has nothing to do with official time in India and nothing at all in Himachal. I kept on oscillating between the two shops till 10 am, but had to manage with Pulsars break shoe as CBZ is not a favorite bike in Kaza. The break shoe costed me 250 bucks which would be available in Chandigarh for just 100 odd rupees. The lazy mechanic kept on shifting his work focus from one bike to another and took more than 2 hours.
Finally we were ready to leave for Chandrataal by 1pm but beautiful vistas prevented us to achieve the destination the same day. It was approx. 4.30pm when we reached Losar. Route ahead was even more scenic, hence we decided to stay at Losar only and ride further lazily the next morning. We stayed in the same IPH inspection hut at Chichong (1km. before Losar) where I did last year.
After a cup of tea we roam around to capture the beauty of the place and taste sweet peas of Spiti.

next morning we left for Chandrataal by 6.30am. The road to Kunzum was as beautiful and as much maintained as expected
The dark clouds greeted us near the top, and making us worry for the remaining part of our journey as the toughest part was yet to be traversed and most importantly the Batal-Chandrataal route is not much friendly in the rains. thankfully they just smiled at us and passed by
