Default an unfinished off roading trip to rose hills completed on our impulse after one year

It was a promise made after our unfinished trip to rose hills( rose “mala” in Malayalam) last year. I will come again and do it. With the pleasures of biking also comes the displeasures. During the trip last year at rose hills i went down in water while crossing a water body. And almost lost my bike. Stranded in the middle of a forest at the mercy of mother nature our journey back was made in a rickety jeep with our bike tied to the back. My bad back had taken a beating for another 2 months and i carried on. Yes we had many trips since then on our Impulse and the trip to rose hills was a lesson learned to be more cautious and careful in riding off road. Many times the question popped up in my mind when do i go back to rose hills. So it was finally on April 3rd 2013 i decided out of the blue to have a go on 4th. I told that i am going to rose hills come what may tomorrow. After some reluctance she let me go on the condition that she too come. So there last time we were together the same goes this time too. For my daughter and mother in law it was a trip to thenmala the eco tourism resort in the near vicinity. But some thing else was going on my mind as to what all may go wrong on the trip to the rose mala forest. It was a ride of 100 kms from thiruvananthapuram to the entry point into the forest then about 14 kms of off roading inside the forest to reach rose hills and back the same distance and the same route to finally ride back the 100 kms to my home in thiruvananthapuram. This is not a tourist spot by any standards(you may not get much first person write ups on this place) and the route is isolated so much that you may not meet any soul for the entire stretch. Elephants are plenty and the liberal smattering of electric fences on the track sides are a clear indication. Except for 2 spots you don’t get any cell phone signal and completly cut off. So with all this behind you and your better half also behind , you have to just forget all the stories and fully concentrate on the ride. And yes i trust my impulse after having being together on the worst situations together. So Sunday morning 6-00 am it was go for us.

    break fast break at punalur

    entry to rose hills

The real ride starts from here

clear water is dangerously deceptive. the depth is well hidden with pits which can be more than a meter deep. to check first and then cross your bike has to be the rule else you pay the price like i did the last time.

our impulse just below the hill top

there is a temple on top but no habitatation. pooja is done by locals early morning and evening.

when we were on top we were alone with no soul in sight. then we heard the shrill trumpet cry of a wild elephant in the forest. it was bone chilling as we had to go back the same way. my better half kept her cool. but we hurried back.

her smile says it all we have crossed the water body intact

he saved us last time in his rickety jeep. now one year later we were happy and lucky to meet him. this time with a brand new keep. Shri.Radhakrishnan. a local.

posing for a self timed shot some where in the middle of the forest

finally we come back where we have started in one piece

Back on normal roads for our 100 kms return ride to thiruvananthapuram

lunch break at green lizard hotel written in malayalam

now lunch over at a crazy joint it is another 85 kms ride back to thiruvananthapuram

for all of you reading this. for us photography was sort of secondary. so no photos were taken especially to highlight the difficulty of the route or the ride. and i had to complete the ride simply because i failed last time. probably it may not be a difficult ride for many of you. for me yes it was. but i can assure you it is no cake walk as on date of writing this. i am yet to get any thing much written about this hills esp on a bike. But it is an enjoyable ride with the right bike. hope to see some one else do it and share their side of the strory. till such time.......
