Default “Nilagiri Days” Our Freedom Ride To The Hills

It all started with the movie. We were watching a Malayalam movie: “Neelakasham, Pachakadal, Chuvanna Bhoomi” a story where the protagonist rides his Bullet motorcycle from Kerala to Nagaland to meet his lady love. He and his friend embark on this adventurous ride through many states to reach his goal.
As we watched the riders head out, the thump and growl of the bullets, the long winding highways passing through cities, and villages and the ever endearing mountain roads, the pure joy of heading into the wind, the exhilarating sense of freedom which only bikers can explain was enough to trigger our need to head on to a highway. There was a long weekend coming up and with the weather looking perfect for riding, we decided to head out to the hills.

I’ve been riding to the Nilagiris since my bachelor days and have continued to ride there even after marriage. In fact my first long ride with wifey was to Ooty in 1994. In spite of so many rides there, we still loved to ride to that place. At 300km it was a short ride and gave us a chance to ride through the forest and get a taste of the curves and the weather never disappointed

So on Independence Day, on a cool and cloudy morning we head out to celebrate our freedom

    The Onward Route: Bangalore/Kanakapura/Malavalli/Kollegal/Chamarajnagar/Satyamangalam/Mettupallayam/Coonoor.

It being a long weekend, we know the regular route via Mandya and Mysore will be crowded with holiday makers heading out, so we decide to take the above route. It’s fairly crowded till about Kanakapura but after that it’s a pleasant ride through villages and fields of green

The recent rains have filled up the rivers and the fields and trees display the joyful green, a color we can never tire of, especially us city blokes choking among the concrete and smoke.

We pull over near Malavalli for breakfast at a small roadside eatery. Steaming hot idilies, chutney and tea, tastes so good on a morning ride! The fresh morning air and of course the ride can not only raise our appetites but also our spirits. Most people around seem to be in a relaxed holiday mood, looking forward to some celebrations and relaxation ahead. The long weekends are really piling up this year!

After breakfast we ride on and soon pass Kollegal. On our last ride on this route we had made a detour to B.R. Hills but this time we continue towards Chamarajnagar and turn towards Shivasamudra and the Gaganachukki falls.

As we near the falls we can hear the roar. The abundant rains have swelled the falls which is in full flow. Nature puts on a show we can only admire in awe. Shutterbugs can’t stop clicking and after a few clicks ourselves we head back on to the highway.

    Into the Blue Hills.. next

    Cheers All

Nice ride. Especially, with the monsoons its all green and rivers in full flow.
I also want to do some exploring on the Kanakapura Route.

Thanks a lot Avi! Aha! Hero indeed

Shortly we cross the border into Tamil Nadu. As we near Satyamangalam, the forest roads begin and there are 27 Hair Pin curves to negotiate. It’s a little tricky since the road is narrow and upcoming heavy vehicles grab most of the road. Still the views from above are amazing and worth every curve. At the back of our mind is the fact a dreaded dacoit used to rule these regions during his heyday.

Wonder what’s this eternal romance of a biker and the hills? Those enchanting curves maybe? Or the mystery of what could lie around the next corner? Up or down the hills and a biker are truly bound by a fascinating bond.

As we continue climbing, we see a warning to watch out for leopards. It’s a relevant warning since just recently; a forest guard was mauled to death in the region. Even at the foothills, some locals had warned us not to stop until we cross the forest.

Once clear of the Ghats, we are soon near Mettupallayam and pass the huge Bhavani Sagar Dam and onto the Ooty road. Again another narrow road crowded with traffic. The road connects Coimbatore to Ooty and the long weekend means heavy traffic.

Thankfully we are soon at Coonoor and branch off towards our guest house, reaching just in time for a relaxing lunch.

The guest house is away from the hustle and bustle, nestled among lovely tea gardens, a quiet place to relax and unwind. A hot shower and warm lunch feels truly great!

The weather was just perfect. Many moods by the minute. Fluffy white clouds like great balls of cotton moving as if to embrace the magnificently silent hills, the next minute a monsoon wind suddenly blows in, turning the clouds an angry shade of grey and pushing them to hug the hills. A sudden chill makes us zip up our jackets. The clouds scatter the finest of fine sprays of moisture into the air, so fine it looks like smoke from a distance. As our visors get moist and we smell the cool hillside air, it’s a joyously special feeling. The hills are truly alive!

As evening draws near, and darkness sets in bringing with it a silence only punctuated by insects of the night. It’s wonderful music to listen to on a pleasantly chill night. Thankfully there’s no TV or IPod around to spoil this lovely night.

The next morning after breakfast we decide to ride down to Kotagiri and Kodanadu view point. The weather again is perfect and the tea garden lined route is a joy to ride through.

There are some amazing panoramic views from Kodanadu and after some clicks and some hot tea we return. On the way back we cross a large group of bikers on P200 NS riding towards the view point. We wave to each other in passing. Later I message one of our friends and learn from him that it’s the “Naked Wolves” group on their G2G at Ooty.

Next... Our Ride Back Home & The Curves!

    Cheers All!
