Default “Chasing The Hills” – Winter Of 14

Oh Yes! A biker’s dreams! Forever flitting around long winding highways, misty mountains, sunrises filled with hope and promise and sunsets waving goodbye. Of curvy wooded roads and thrilling hairpin bends, enchanting forests and eerie silences. Of standing at the edge of a cliff to admire the horizon, to be deeply grateful to God for this beautiful world we call home.

Motorcycling for us is not about the journey or the destination, it’s a celebration of our freedom, of chasing our dreams and a celebration of life itself.
It’s the holiday season and a lovely time of the year, pleasantly chill nights and bright sunny days. Perfect to mount our bike and ride off of yet another adventure! And that’s exactly what we did, on another chill winter morning we set off on a 2,000km ride to rediscover some more beautiful corners of our world and discover ourselves too as we ride on.
It’s been a fairly long ride stretched over 7 days as explore and connect with friends and family through the Christmas week. The log will be in parts just as our journey was

    1. Bangalore/Krishnagiri/Salem/Trichy/Tanjavur/Nagapattanam/Velankanni

It’s been an annual ritual for us since many years to visit the holy shrine Velankanni and this year was no different. As usual we leave early in the morning. It’s the middle of winter and the chill hits you and wakes you up and the thrill of the start of a long ride only bikers will understand.

It’s a by now too familiar highway like so many others, having gone through this way so many times, but still every ride feels special and joyful.

We are soon near Dharmapuri and pull over for a breakfast of hot dosas and coffee. We enjoy these little wayside shacks with their wood fire and food served with a smile and of course there are the mandatory curious looks at our bike, gear and maybe our age too!

Breakfast over we head out again and a little after noon we reach Trichy and decide to have an early lunch on the outskirts to avoid stopping inside the city. The roads are good except a very small stretch at the end and be around 5pm we reach the Velankanni shrine.

After visiting the shrine we retire for the night at one of the rooms on the church premises

    The Onward Adventure...To Be Continued..
    Cheers!

We rise early and visit the church for an early morning service. The weather at this time of the year is cool and pleasant unlike during the summer months which can be really hot and humid. After breakfast we check out and shortly we are on the ECR.

Though not very broad as highways go and even though you ride through numerous fishing villages, the ECR is enjoyable ride as we head south. The last time we rode this way was on our way to Rameshwaram/Dhanushkodi/Kanyakumari. This time at Kattumavadi we turn off towards Madurai.

We head into one of the coolest roads, tree lined and shady with beautiful green fields on both sides these are the kind of roads we just need to admire!

We break for an early lunch at Karaikudi tucking into some hot rice and tasty TN sambar! It starts to get warm now as we head inland and as we near Madurai, we pass numerous ancient temples in some quaint villages. Shortly we reach the temple town of Madurai to meet our friend and break for the day.

The next morning we take a short ride to visit the world famous Madurai Meenakshi temple. It’s truly magnificent we would have loved to visit inside but it being the Sabarimalai and Om Shakthi season, long queues are waiting to get inside and we would need the better part of a day to get inside. So after a few clicks we pay our respects from outside and head back.

Next, Kodaikanal and some chilly times...

    Cheers!!

    Thank you Krishna

After breakfast we head out again. It’s getting warm now but we never had any idea of the freezing times waiting for us!

    Madurai/Ayyankotai/Vadipatti/Nilakotai/Kodaikanal

It’s a short ride to Kodaikanal there’s a lot of climbing involved and as we climb higher, it gets colder and colder and the mist and fog settles in. Soon visibility becomes damn near zero and my visor and glasses get misted over and the going gets real slow. Everybody is driving with headlights on. We stop for a hot cup of coffee to warm up and soon happily reach our room.

Kodai was freezing! The sun had truly lost the battle with the mist and the fog and occasionally just managed to peep through the clouds but the warmth would not reach us and sweaters and mufflers were the order of the day. And to think we were sweating away in our jackets just this morning!
We make a few short rides to explore the place but mostly its blankets and bed in our cozy room!

Chilling at Kodai and a scenic route as we ride on....next

    Cheers!!

    Thanks again Krishna

    A few clicks around Kodai!

    4. Kodaikanal/Palani/Udumalpet/Pollachi/Vadakancherry/Thrissur/Alur

The Kodaikanal to Palani route is spectacular! Though patchy in parts and narrow and often quite dangerous the Palani hills have some of the most amazing views we have seen. The drop down to the valley could be many hundreds of feet and at most places the side walls don’t exist. We need to ride carefully as we admire the truly amazing views.

Soon we are at the famous temple town of Palani, (maybe unwittingly, but we seem to riding from one holy town to another!). But then we all love to blessed don’t we?

Lunch is at the border town of Pollachi. The menu is already Kerala as we soon cross over into the state and by late afternoon we reach my sister’s place Alur.

Christmas at home with family and the ride continues....

    Cheers
