Default Bike trip to LEH Ladakh- LEHMEN

    Hello Friends,

Before I start sharing my life time experience about the epic trip to the majestic Himalayas...(to Ladakh), I want you all to see my first video of the trip. Please view in full screen and turn up the volume.

Before I go in to detail let me just show you the outline of our mega trip.

    Bangalore---(flight)----Chandigarh---(bus)---Manali---(bullet)---Keylong---(bullet)---sarchu---(bullet)---LEH---(bullet)---Khardung la & back to LEH---(Taxi)---Pangong Lake & Back to LEH---(bullet)---Drass---(bullet)---Srinagar---(bullet)---Jammu---(bullet)---Amritsar---(bullet)---Hamirpur---(Bullet)---Manali---(bus)---Delhi---(flight)---Bangalore

Trip Start date: 18th July 2014
Trip End date: 03rd Aug 2014
    Trip Meter: 2055kms in Bike
Total expenses per head for the entire trip: 65000 bucks
    Head Count- 4 friends
Bike: 4 classic bullets rented from Manali for 1200 bucks per day

It all began in 2013 when our manager was showing his photos taken during the ladhak trip. Me and my friends, till then were not even aware about the existence of such a place. We were spellbound by the beauty of the place. Then we 4 guys decided that, yes we should do this and should be done with in an year. Then we all started googling about the place, gathered as much information as possible. Then we decided to do this in mid of 2014. In the mean time my marriage got fixed on May 2014. I was little worried if every one agrees to the trip or not. Then I started convincing my girl. She agreed. In the start of the year 2014 we fixed the date for the trip and booked flight tickets for 4. Yes, it was on 18th july 2014 to 3rd Aug 2014. That is just after 2 months of my marriage. With lot of courage, I finally decided to tell this to my mom and dad. Dad agreed as usual but with bit of fear. But my mom was completely not ready to send me. She wanted me to cancel the tickets. But after convincing for atleast a week, she agreed. Thank God.

Then started our planning to the mega trip. Purchasing stuff, confirming bikes, making cash ready and planning the routes. We purchased the following stuff. This could be helpful for any future riders...

    Band aid
    Cotton
    Burnol: for burn wounds
    Vaselin lip guard
    Vicks
    Coldact: for nose running

    General wound cream

The mega trip day 1 : 18th july ( Bangalore – Chandigarh by flight)
It was early morning flight. We had booked a cab. All packing was done. I was the last one to be picked up near Banaswadi. Finally the guys came bit earlier than thought. With lot of enthu and advice from my parents to all 4 of us, we left the house. Reached Chandigarh by noon. Had some good food and enquired many taxis for Manali. But all were very expensive. So decided to board a night bus and reach there next early morning. It was bit raining near manali. Extremely cold. Finally slept in the bus after a small and simple dinner.

    Day 2: 19th July ( Reached Manali)
Reached Manali early morning. Took a taxi to go to manali town. This was my second visit to manali in 2 months. First was with my wife… Hope you got what was the first visit about. So I was the guide foe my friends. Boarded to less expensive room. 1k per day. Had break fast. Took some rest. Next target was to hire 4 bullets. Enquired locally but all were not up to our expectation. Finally I took them to the Snow peak retreat hotel where they had few new bullets. And yes he had them, that too newly serviced. Took a test ride and decided to go for it. Paid full amount in advance. Gave our ID proof Xerox. The rent was 1200/- per day. He had two 350cc and two 500cc classic bikes. As usual I got the lesser one. 350cc wala.Left the place and went for some local sightseeing. And here are the pics.

Thanks for approving the thread. I will continue the from day 3..

    Day 3: 20th july ( Manali Keylong 125kms- ETD:12:30pm, ETA- 9pm- Duration: 8hrs30mins)

Never thought we will be so much late. Got up early but left late. Tying the bags, sleeping bags, jerry cans to the bike took very long time as no one were had experience in packing. No probsWith cool mind and praying god, we all left. Just at exit of manali filled petrol in all 4 bikes and 4 5lts jerry cans. Got my bikes leg brake checked as it was bit lose. Yes. It was too thrilling to start the epic trip. Just after 5 kms from Manali, we got a bit of experience that how difficult the next stages would be. Yes it was continually drizzling, roads were damp and some repair work was going on. It was bit skiddy.. The first video which you saw was taken in stretch.
On the way to rohtang pass, the road was blocked because a truck was broke down. There was massive jam. Got stuck there atleast for 45mins. The local guys were not allowing us to stand there as the land slides are common there. Some big rocks can just fall suddenly there. After much wait we started again. The snow point from Manali was very far also the crowd was very less at snow point. Had some delicious Maggie and corn. Still 100kms was ahead of us. And it was just 3 hrs left for getting dark. We didnt have any idea how difficult the road in the next part it would be. And OhhhhhhMyGOD The tough part started. The next 25kms was curvy road and 1-2 feet slush. No control over the bike what so ever. Just go where ever it takes you. The horrified and still thrilling experience. The 25 kms stretch took atleast 2 hrs to complete. My friend lost control and fell 2 times. But no injury as there was no hard surface. My GOpro camera was running continues. No other bikers were in our way. We knew we were late. No other place to stay overnight. We knew we had to ride in dark in such a dangerous road. With some little breaks, we continued our ride. It was dark. Most of the time I was in the front and friends back. We had no idea how much deep it was next to us but we were sure it will be steep. Luckily the road was dry but definitely bad roads. Suddenly in that dark I felt I saw a deviation board heading to Keylong. So I suddenly stopped. My mistake. My friend Ajitha lost the control and hit me. Luckily no injuries again. Just a small dent to my bikes side guard. We headed down to the town. Parked our vehicles and 2 of us went to enquire some hotels. Finally got some good hotel. Boarded there. Had dinner took some rest. Informed our families and told them that we wont get mobile signal for next 2 days. Cleaned our boots and slept.

The bullets just ready for the expedition

    Misty noon just after manali

    Thanks friend for wonderful pose..

    Still in manali outer

The only food option in Rohthang pass

Still not sure why is that and what is that?

    Hotel in Keylong.

The only petrol bunk at keylong. Next only near LEH.

    Day 4: 21st July (Keylong to Sarchu: 140kms: ETD: 10:30am, ETA: 7pm )

Morning at Keylong hotel was horrible. No water. No power supply. Had to wash our face and base using bisleri water. Had sandwitch breakfast. Again did packing, tying and left the place. There is a petrol bunk where you can see a board saying this is the only bunk after which you can find one near LEH. So we filled all our tanks and cans. The roads at this stretch is the where we rode last night. Very narrow road and sudden steep with protection. All of us were shit scared for a second. Then continued our journey. Before leaving we made it a point not to ride in dark. Atleast next 50kms were very good till Jispa where we had lunch. Had wonderful luch at Jispa and then left. Then started the real scary part. Yes, thats water stream crossing. The first one was near Barlachala. OH MY GOD. That was really tough one. Only trucks and SUVs were crossing easily. There were few foreign bikers doing a video shoot. The stream current was too much. The depth on the water covered road was atleast 2 feet with boulders. So no option of crossing by bike. There was some flat surface just at the point where water falls. So you need to ride through the falling water and move forward. So , one at a time. I was the last one in the queue. My Gopro camera was running. The first friend took lot of time. In between got stuck but with lesser risk could cross the road. So as other 2 friends. But I lost the control. Just got stuck in the middle. Enter snow water is falling at my thigh level. I was giving full throttle but that bike was not willing to go forward. My left leg was on gear and right leg was trying to find the ground. But was too deep to touch. In a second, I thought that I would fall down. That would have been a major upset. But thanks to Ajith and another local guy. They rushed near me. Stopped me from falling and pulled my bike. Finally I was out of water. Took a long break there. Had some snickers. Our fear was how would be our next water crossing. We continued our journey. In the transit we encountered atleast 4 to 5 medium difficulty level crossings. Much easier than the first one. It was almost 8pm when we reached sarchu. There were many bikers there but we were not in a position to talk to anyone. All of us were very tired. Still it wasnt dark. So initially thought of setting up our own tent but it was so cold and we were so tired that we decided to take a tent for rent. The overnight stay was horrible. It was too cold. I was suffering from heavy headache. Took some tablets and some parathas and slept. But 3 of us did not get sleep full night. They say that is common for most of the guys because of high altitude. The temperature was below 5 degrees. Entire night was spent shivering. Finally the night is over.

    on the way to sarchu..

    Water crossing at Barlacha la

    The heaven...

    looks different

    GHOST RIDER....

    distance board at sarchu..

The tent which made us sleep less for whole night.. Thx to big big holes in the tent which made us to shiver whole night.

Will upload day 5 write up shortly...

    nice.
I see that you took thermals and sleeping bag.
Was it so cold that you needed thermals? July is kind of summer.
And was the sleeping bag of any use i.e., did you camp out somewhere?
