Cool The Manali Diary - 22 Days, 7500 Kms, 7 years old Yamaha and Solo as always.

    The Manali Diary
22 Days, 7500 Kms, 7 years old Yamaha and Solo as always.

5:30 AM, 31st March 2016: Waving gesture at Mom & a glance at my Japanese. Ignition, clutch, first gear down, release & here I go.
Out of society gate, touching highway within 5 minutes, after long lost time, I was seeing NMMT, ST & school buses having unoccupied seats, breaking of the dawn with sky turning from dark blue to yellow. After more than an hour’s ride, I was ready on NH-8. A small tea break with adjustment of my bum on newly fabricated seat.
Dude, you sure?” an inside voice asked me. I responded, “May be, I don’t know. However, what I now know is I am already on my bike & have covered 100 Kms, have ample & extra cash for entire road trip including fuel, stay, food & beer so what’s there to worry about?”. More the gears going up, the same thoughts were diminishing which eventually faded away my worries. I was just simply taking a feel of each & every second on bike since this action started again after long.
After the worries went dead, the next was anxiety attack (which I usually suffer from – being patient is a herculean task for me) which was perfectly mixed with happiness and essence of confidence.
“Hell yeah! I am doing it. I am doing what I had thought couple of weeks back. I am making it”. The same brain was acting a little weirdo now – first it was unsure & now? The realization of what you want to see & how you want to perceive the seen. With the new tarmac great up till now, the summer sense was not something to be felt; instead the road heat which resulted in warm air made the intake a little unhappy was a little concern. Adjusted the saddle bag to make air filter smile.
Keeping the road calculations on threshold with good breakfast and ample of water supply to body. The parallel thoughts of life & road started here – each turn was a different, each turn has different entry speed, different lean angle with different front braking simultaneously. This is how I did; others would have done the same (however, exact replica can’t be put in for every turn of mine, because others can’t simply turn the way I did for every turn) or different (obvious) – this means STOP COMPARING & just simply do!
Nearing MH-GJ border, a little fear was striking which I knew which will apparently hit because the same place I had a crash 2 years before on my R1 at 260 kmph. I was saved with just hairline fractures & discharge from hospital within 5 day, without surgery & just calcium tablets. Whatever happened with big truck – ultimately I was responsible because I had to suffer.
After crossing the feared milestone, I no longer wanted to think about it. With few breaks every 30-50 minutes & chit chats with people around, I was feeling fresh.
I now no longer remember my employee number, my desk extension, manager as well as colleagues. Not because I was happy riding but saying to self “I have quit my job and will go at my own pace every second.” Sometimes you ought to be rational with the philosophy of life.
With all those thoughts, the bike started jerking upon throttle – AHH, gone in reserve. As soon as, the fuel knob was turned towards reserve point, I saw BPCL pump near SURAT with CCD. It was 12:00 noon and yes, i could hear my stomach shouting chicken, chicken, chicken, chicken. CCD was pure veg!
Drinking lemonade & water like camel, took 30 minutes break. I was then updating location to my friends was looking at self how I evolved again – with permission from mom after crash, buying my FZ again to whom I sold, block piston changed just a day back. This was much needed for me since after my crash I couldn’t attain that much of confidence which I used to had pre-crash.
After fueling and having a vision to just enjoy for the days till I ride back to Bombay & go hell with everything – all cellphones in saddle bag. I will go at my speed – numbers don’t make the speed high or low, it’s about where & how I was comfortable and to safely sustain to tour lifetime.

With odometer clocking more and more, the wrist watch too showed 5:00 PM in Ahmedabad. Like always, I used to start searching for hotels by 4 o clock evening which used to give me choices on hotels & time. I was in hotel at 5:45 PM, got fresh and was out to look something for my tummy.
With no beer in Gujarat, I was happily getting high with water bottles and where I was going. With rough fuel calculation for the day (average – 42 kmpl), I realized I was carrying double the amount of cash required – BONUS, I then opened Google map and pointed out all the places where I will go i.e. – where there are known faces, I will meet them instead of going directly where I want to.

Next day similar ride with #MyPhilosphy, I got oil changed at YSS, Himmatnagar. The staff and mechanics were was really good & courteous; they did everything within 20 minutes considering the fact that the service center wasn’t OPEN. They still did it for me after I told them the long way I had to go. I was carrying MOTUL 15W50 which was the perfect one to go with considering the ambient temperature and the continuous running. The oil was accompanied by MOTUL chain spray.
Running into Rajasthan, the roads were the first smallest challenge. Why? Because they were deformed due to truck loads which usually carry marbles. The curvy, unbalanced, drifting path, sudden potholes were making me slow in context to time I had since I wished to halt at Ajmer. The wheels were getting attracted to the deformed road as well as were responsible for controlling the movement for about 20% , I instead of fighting back, used them & I reached Bhim, Rajasthan (100 Kms before Ajmer). There I saw a big wine shop & a good hotel opposite to each other, nothing better than this & again I booked an AC room. With music on TV, beer & empty head, I was enjoying the time.
With amazing quality food, taste & room service – the day was made & I snored the whole night.
Third day I rode till Sikar, Rajasthan where my friend owns a resort. I directly went in there – with free food, room, beer & 2 days of enjoyment, I then started towards interiors where I could experience desert love.
The same day, I made to my NANA NANI place and boom, a big surprise. It then had been almost 3 years we didn’t see each other – quite a long time for a family. A happy time cracking jokes, laughing out and discussing things of past versus present where we give excuses of time & being busy for not talking over. Are we so busy in everything that we can’t take out time for them? Even 5 minutes in a month? I accepted and admitted what was going wrong from my side. There was a time when we used to travel by train & buses to meet them during summer vacations but now even after having car and all the leisure we wanted, we didn’t make it. The lost time can never be back, so I made a move to at least correct it now & it was the most beautiful decision I had ever made. My NANA JI also had kept those drawing & letters I used to send him by post when I a little kid. I felt ashamed of being so much of civilized. So I had to make it for it, because it was me who made bad the worse. And yes, it was a success how I visualized to make it best. They were really happy; those glittering eyes of purity were at peak which I can say as priceless. The place is located at a geographical location where they saw electricity only in last decade. Staying there for 2 days, it was time to move ahead. Upon leaving their same old fashioned style of showing love – “Beta, desi ghee lee jaa.” Nothing could & ever will replace that affection towards me. Who doesn’t want to love everyone & live happily, however, the sour truth of life too was calling me. The feel where you instantly have to cut yourself emotionally to go on the life’s path is not that good.
“I will return soon”, I said. While saying so, I was feared with the time factor – this gave me another lesson of HOPE versus FAITH.
Touring another 25 Kms, I see my DADA JI & DADI JI. Couldn’t spend much time them because they were blindly after me for getting married. Typical Indian styled DADA JI. So, I left within 5 minutes.
Same day, another 150 Kms, watching the traffic as it was going worse; I am talking about the driving sense. Watching all the standstill trucks at outer left lane, rear view mirrors, and blind people with steering in hand and those beautiful creatures on motorcycle who love riding the wrong way only – pretty exhausting. I reached Gurgaon.
I was staying at my uncle’s place – the best part is I grab the bedroom & uncle then has to sleep on the sofa. A very big joint family where it’s expected some or the other will come for no reason or excuses. Hey, hold on he’s not my relative at all – JUST FRIENDS. All 11 kids of the house grew up from being in first standard to riding RE in no time!
For the first time I could sense time from my eyes.
The 5 days were perfectly well spent in Gurgaon in relaxing, chilling out with all uncles, aunties, kids (now big kids), school friends, close buddies, partying & much more .
After 5 days, the eye rose up to bike where I had to again go ahead for my voyage, got ready by morning 6:30 and each member of the family was at the gate with uncle shouting “Don’t for my jacket, do get it back.”. Yes, I snatched his jacket for the cold up there at Himachal.
Avoiding Delhi traffic was the main concern for me which I was able to. However at Azadpur Mandi, I literally wanted to play old school road rash game.
By-passing Chandigarh and not taking via Bilaspur, by evening 5:00 I was in Shimla. During Gurgaon-Shimla ride, the plains changed to inclines & declines, big farming lands were now mountains, the highway polluted air was now more of fresh air (which I liked the most), a 100 kg flesh on FZ was turning into a bum moving corners (again with safe control – during this time frame sides of tires were being used) and those sudden scenic frame which did trigger my something. Oh yeah baby, I was enjoying.
After settling in hotel, I freshened up. A night well spent with sweet pegs of old monk, gazing the glittering sky and new thoughts from recent experiences said in above paragraph. Got up early to witness the transitions from stars to sun in sky.
Moving ahead for Manali, I was now comfortable with the valley riding and then SUNDERNAGAR patch of welcomed me tagging along with muddy plains where the surface moved as per its own wish & will. Riding with balance of thoughts and road focus, I reached Manali by evening 4:30.
Upon playing questionnaire with a guy named Harender, he pointed the camp site which was just 5 meters away. He called up the owner – Tarun Sharma; since he was in Kasol, Tarun asked Harender to take care of me. Harender then informed me about the camp site – it’s yet to be inaugurated & all work is not yet done; my replied question was “Toilet - Bathroom?”
As he opened the gate, the slow moving tires were making noise on small entry way made up with petite white pebbles & stoned with outline of moderately big sized white stones. I loved it! As I entered & gazed up a little bit to see place to park bike, I saw centrally placed bonfire. Surprisingly enough, the freezing water of river Bear was flowing just next to my tent & beneath the open sky I saw snow covered peak. I decided to stay here with the climate behaving the best. Harender got everything ready, all pipe connections & everything in 40 minutes of time including bed, bathroom, hot water, lights, charging point and everything.
The next day was spent sitting all alone on big relaxing chair next to river. Next day I moved out of hotel & started staying with local people – start was with Harender, his roomie Guleria Sir, the Gardner & the cook. From being with unknown to getting invited at places as if we know. This gentleman was inviting all including me (where i was sitting with locals & was getting warm with fire) for his daughter’s first birthday party. Form cake cutting to sweets to alcohol to dinner, they took care of everything for everyone. They never made me feel even anything different from them even a single percent. ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH!
The owner of the camps & tent – Tarun was into full picture. Upon knowing that I am riding from BOM, he made a visit to see me. Before we were over phone talking like customer & service provider; now, tables turned & we were amazing with each other. He took me out everywhere in his personal white licensed plate car everywhere in KASOL, PARVATI, MANIKARAN & even MALANA. He didn’t even charge me anything for anything. We were just like friends where he took me whenever he was going out anywhere because he turned out to my long lost cousin where I met him for the first time.
Met top people who organize trance & techno music party, which I joined, stayed there, enjoyed there. Everything experienced there can’t be put in words here. The plan drifted from 3 days stay to 9 days stay. A lot happened at this place, limitless experiences with self in life.
For all XBHP members – TARUN is also an avid biker cum mountaineer who has more than 10 different places to stay in Manali, Kasol, Parvati, Malana, Tosh & more. His services include – stay, food, pickup from Delhi / Chandigarh, cars & bike on rent, drivers / guide, river rafting, support vehicle for LEH, tours & everything. You can reach out TARUN SHARMA (known as Tannu Bhaai Ji across all the places out there) at 98-05-33-87-20. No matter you are a DJ who wants to perform or a one who wants to explore, he will help you. Also, you may give my reference to get all the services at base rate!
The night before the start of return journey, we had a big party at our camp.
I collected each & every single second moment inside me of these days, a lot of talk, conversations, meeting new people, talking what you feel like, do what you feel like & a lot more.
The same route was taken back for Mumbai however; another stay was taken 350 Kms before my home as it was getting dark after covering 800 Kms in a day. I directly went to my girlfriend’s house in Surat. With 9 litres of water and 15 glasses sugarcane juice, the dinner was prepared seeing my size and I was full within a minute. Good chit chat, jokes, laugh & sleep.
Next day I reached home where mummy was waiting for me down the building.
Right now, I am writing this sitting at the same place where my real younger brother used to, whom I lost 4 years back, he was just 16. Also, after my crash, I had to sell my all 3 Yamaha. I then bought the same FZ16 I sold to & from the same guy – refurbished every corner of it.
My family was destroyed slowly with the world’s eye, dad being out of India majority of the time, mom being alone at home & my job being in Pune. I just didn’t like what had been happening in my life so rather than waiting for the change to happen; I created the change. I still convinced my mom for road trip. Now, I am at home sitting with mom, making food & preparing for my GMAT.

    Thank you everyone for everything!
Those 22 days of my life!

    Sure,
    1. Mumbai - Surat - Vadodra - Ahemdbd - Himmatnagar via NH-8 --> superb tarmac
    2. Entering into Rajasthan from Himmatnagar till RJ border via NH-8 --> good
    3. RJ border till udaipur --> BAD
    4. udaipur to ajmer --> Superb
    5. Ajmer to Jaipur --> good
    6. Jaipur to delhi --> okay okay (due to traffic sense )
    7. delhi to chandigardh --> good
    8. Chandigardh to Shimla --> Curves with one wrong twist on wrist & the gone shall never come back !
Shimla to Manali via mandi & Sundernagar -->Mandi - disc brakes dont work on fresh cow/buffalo/bull dung cakes, icing on fresh hot cake is finding these animals exactly at the centre of the road
Sundernagar - a patch of 10 kms is without road (sundernagar)

    Alternative to number 8 above:
    8. Chandigardh to Manali via Bilaspur section going swarg-ghat
    usually heavy commercials running.
