Default A leisurely 3 day ride from Chennai to Valparai - Athirapally - Kochi

2016 is about to end and I haven't concluded the year yet. It would be abysmal if I don't make use of my comp-off's. I wanted this year to end on a higher note as I've hardly made 2 long rides for the season.

Solo, yet again! Yes, I love that part. It doesn't mean that I'm not in good terms with my fellow riders. I prefer to ride solo for plenty of reasons. First reason: I'm always independent. Another reason is , that I don't plan well in advance; which makes it bit difficult for other drivers to join with me.

The reason why I wanted to ride on a Christmas day weekend is because I will have less back logs when I get back to work the next week. I've worked on holidays, so that I can use those two days along with the weekend. Approached my lead and told that I would need 2- days off from the week. The best part is that he never told me "NO". It's always been "Yes". So, I was not surprised. I asked whether I can take leave on Monday and Tuesday as it falls after Christmas and are considered as holidays in US and UK. It was first a YES and later we found that there are others who would be taking OFF on those days and I had to either prepone or postpone my trip.

The sooner, the better! So, I decided to start my journey two days ahead. So, I opted to take leave on Thursday and Friday just before the Christmas. Before the preponement, I had discussed with my friend (who's currently working in Trivandrum), that I would be first visiting Trivandrum and explore places like Varkala, Kovalam and Allepey and then return back to Chennai . This has been my original plan. Since I've preponed my journey, he wouldn't be free on Thursday and Friday. So, I'd to reverse my plan.

Whenever I plan for a trip, I always take suggestions from the fellow riders. In this case, I checked with BalaGanapathy; a prominent rider ; who has done Chennai-Ladakh-Chennai on his Avenger along with his better half. Since he has explored all the places down South, I asked him what all should I be trying. He was the one, who gave the fantastic idea of touring Valparai-Athirapally route. As mentioned before, since my journey was about to begin on Thursday, I can't head straight to Trivandrum as my friend can't spend time with me on a Weekday. So, I had to reverse my plan. Visit some place and then head to Trivandrum as a last leg of the tour.

It was finalized later. I decided to first visit Valparai all the way from Chennai, then head to Athirapally. Then to Trivandrum and all the way back home. Of course, it didn't happen as planned. All these incidents were sketched a day prior to my journey.

What I originally planned is as follows:

Day 1 (22-Dec-2016). Chennai to Valparai

Day 2 (23-Dec-2016). Explore places nearby Valparai and head to Athirapally and proceed all the way towards Trivandrum.

But Bala advised me that it would be a tiring journey and told me to stay at a mid-way in Thodupuzha.

Day 3 (24-Dec-2016) To Trivandrum and explore the beaches

Day 4 (25-Dec-2016) Head straight back to Chennai.

Not much happened as planned. Would narrate the incidents that unfolded once my thread is approved.

    For now, enjoy the teasers.

Thank you so much for approving my thread.

This plan would have not been materialized if hadn't come across @experimentalhead's "perennial-quest-deep-down-south-solo-ride-7-days-2000-km" I initially wanted to try something of that sort, covering the entire South Indian coastal stretch. However, I couldn't afford more than 4 days. Hence, I had to stick with my very own version of planning.

Just before dinner, informed my dad that I would be leaving to Valparai tomorrow at the early hours of dawn. He wasn't shocked or awestruck. He just wanted to know what are all the places that I would be covering and routes that I'll be travelling. He kept insisting me to book the rooms well in advance and I told him that it'll be taken care soon. Packed my bags and had a quick glance about the roads that I'm about to travel. Wanted to leave as early as possible but my dad advised me to start after 6 am for better visibility.

It was 11:30 PM and I crashed into the bed. Not a peaceful sleep a night prior to that journey. As the alarm went off at 4:30 AM, I realized that I haven't slept much and felt a bit tired. However, it was the excitement that kept me fresh and also I know that if I fall asleep, I may end up wasting couple of precious hours for the day. Took bath, had some dry fruits and some corn flakes. Mounted the luggage on my bike; had my gears on and since it was in the month of December, you won't feel much suffocation. Had to wake my parents up and inform them about my departure and got their blessings.

    Day 1: Chennai to Valparai

I knew very well that the roads are going to be good all the way up to Valparai. So, I was least worried about the time. Including the breaks, I might just have this journey concluded in less than 10 or 11 hours. Just got my Thunderbird serviced from the service center a day before my trip. Also, had him fueled up to the brim. The easiest and the fastest route to reach Valparai from Chennai would be NH-45 - Salem Bypass - Avinasi - Pollachi - Valparai. I decided to use the same route as well since it won't be time consuming. Started exactly at 6 am from my home which is located in New Perungalathur, Chennai few metres away from the highway. The traffic was moderate and not heavy as it used to be in the early hours. All I can see was trucks and office buses that kept occupying the NH-45 for the first 40 Kms. My dad was right! The visibility was very less and I can hardly see a vehicle that is ahead of me. There was a thick dense of fog that covered the entire highway. Suddenly felt like I was driving on a highway in the NCR region. As the traffic was moderate I was able to manage for sometime. By the time the sun came down, the fog disappeared all of a sudden. I was then into the cruise mode for a long time until I had my first pit stop in Tindivanam.

Covered 100 odd Kms in 90 minutes as usual. The traffic was now less from moderate and all I can see were only cars. The roads were all good up to Ulundurpet and then I had to take right to join the Salem by pass and head all the way to Salem. NH-79 was also an absolute delight to drive on. For the most part the highway was a 2-way road. In some stretches, it's a single road. Stopped at a hotel few kms before Aathur and had my breakfast. Wasted no time and was back in cruise mode once again and I was comfortably cruising between 85-100 Km/hr. Reached Salem within four hours and thirty minutes since my journey began. From Salem, I need to catch the majestic NH-544 to travel up to Avinasi.

You may have to ask for directions once you reach Salem as there are no boards kept indicating about NH-544. Just follow the board where it says Coimbatore. If you do so, you'll ultimately join the NH-544. But the tricky part is that, don't travel towards Namakkal after joining NH-544 as you will end up reaching Salem once again. Follow the board that just says Coimbatore and you'll be heading towards the correct path. NH-544 is a highway that connects Salem in Tamil Nadu and Kochi in Kerala. If you ought to cover a long distance in a short span of time, this is the kind of road that you should be on. The highway was flat like Chinnasamy stadium's track. It was 3-lane on either sides and the traffic was less. Did not mind to stop anywhere in between. To reach Valparai, I need to travel via Pollachi and to reach Pollachi I can either choose Tiruppur- Palladam route or go to Coimbatore and reach Pollachi. Called my friend to check whether he can meet me real quick in the highway since it's been a while we met. He told that he's at office and the highway is far from his work place. Hence, I told him that I would take the Avinasi by pass proceed towards Pollachi.

Off from the NH-544 and was travelling through the congested stretch of Tiruppur. By this time, I've covered about 430+ KMS in 6 hours. Since, I haven't achieved this on my earlier rides, I personally consider this as an accomplishment. After a honeymoon drive in the highways, it took me a toll to drive on the congested roads of Tiruppur. The traffic was hectic, so was the weather. Also, I noticed some noise from the chain. I know it needs a lube as I struck him real hard in the highways. Also, noticed that my tank was almost empty and I got to refuel it.
Somehow managed to cross Tiruppur and finally had my tank filled at a nearby Gas Station. Found a mechanic shop and asked him to check the condition of the chain. He told that the chain is not loose and it just the lube oil but he doesn't have a stock. Started to look for shops nearby and finally found one near Palladam. The boy must be in his early teens, checked the condition and told me to wait for sometime. His boss arrived and later the boy took care of the chain. It was tightened and was given a lube. I was charged Rs. 120 and thanked Mr. Jayakumar (Owner) for his help. Kept riding along the Pollachi route and I was just 100+ kms away from my destination.

I know it's been a while since I gave something to my stomach. It's lunch time! Unfortunately, I couldn't spot a hotel in the state highway. Managed to find a decent restaurant 25 Kms before Polachi called "Hotel Paari". A family runs this hotel and they own the place as well. The hotel serves some mouth watering "Naatu Kozhi" curry and Chicken Biriyani. The Biriyani was too good made of Seeraga Samba rice. The meat had a perfect flavor and masala and was tender. I can say that I've never had such a fantastic Biriyani made of Seeraga Samba in my entire life. Please do give it a try if you get to travel to this place.

It was Windmills all over before reaching Pollachi. This is probably the first time, I spent sometime in taking the pictures of Windmills. Moreover, I don't spend anytime in taking pictures because I'm not good at that. Reached Pollachi and was heading straight to Aaliyar dam. Aaliyar Dam has been a famous shooting spot since the early 50's in Kollywood. How can one forget "Vishwanathan Velaivendum" from the classic Tamil movie "Kadhalikka Neramillai" directed by the ace Sridhar sir. Parked my vehicle in the parking lot and was advised by the hotel owner that I leave no luggage in the bike as monkeys would rip them off. She was very kind to have my bag at her place, while I can take a walk around the park. The Aaliyar park was filled with couples all over and with very few tourists. Had to climb the steps, to get a glimpse of the dam. I was literally sweating as I had all my gears on and the sun was taking a toll. Sun played an extended cameo here and the temperate was 35 degree celsius. I was all soaked in sweat when I climbed few steps to see the dam. But all the irritation vanished within seconds when I witnessed the breath taking view of Aaliyar Dam. I spent time only in clicking pictures at this place. I'm the only one above the dam and the rest were busy in the park. Spent close to 15 minutes by enjoying the amazing view of Aaliar lake.

Mesmerized by the beauty, came down to the parking lot and started towards Valparai. Thanked the owner for keeping my bag safe. She asked me where am I coming from and once I told that I was coming all the way from Chennai, I was surrounded by other folks as well. They were asking me about the cyclone situation and the damage it caused. They were surprised and shocked at the same time to hear from me that I came all alone. I told the owner that I would visit and eat at your place If I come sometime. Thanked her and made all the way towards Valparai. Just before entering the foot hills of Valparai, I was stopped at the Check Post and asked where am I heading to and I asked them do I need to purchase any entrance tickets. To which they responded, no issues please proceed. The ghat roads were finally on. Nothing gets better than riding your beast in its natural habitat. Man, he loves those curvy roads. 40 hair pin bends were truly challenging and exciting! Could see plenty of riders from other states as well proceeding towards Valparai. Saw a group of bicyclers from Bangalore, who were also headed to Valparai. Met many riders and exchanged salutes !

The road was all good up to Valparai. Couldn't take many snaps as the battery in my phone had died. Saw a group of boys playing Volleyball surrounded by tea plantation on either sides. This is how a life should be. Fresh air and free from noise and air pollution. Took sometime to find the hotel. As per my booking, the name of the hotel was "Hotel Holiday Break",, but no one knows a hotel by that name. Since, it was mentioned that it's located at the back of Gandhi Statue, I asked an auto driver and he guided me to the hotel. There were no boards kept outside. Asked the receptionist that I had a hard time in locating this place. He told it's widely known as "MSK Lodge" and now they've renamed it. It was a decent accommodation and very economical as well. Had a shower and asked the receptionist is there a place that I can visit now. To which he replied, post 5 PM, I can't go anywhere as most of the places would be deserted as the elephants may wander. So, I decided to have a cold beverage and dinner to conclude my day.

Time for some pictures to take care of the rest:
