Default Bangalore to Mangalore (almost) in January 2018

    Hi everyone!

I'm planning a solo road trip from Bangalore to a small village on the way to Mangalore (this is the exact location) in January. The plan is, I leave from Bangalore early 26th morning, and reach this place by late afternoon (although Maps claims it's 6 hours away, I'm assuming it will take me at least 2 hours more due to the bad road) then leave from there early 29th morning and reach Bangalore by evening.

    Questions -
    1. Which route to take? Ghat roads are fine so long as I don't have to constantly fear for my life due to bad road + rash drivers combo.
    2. I've heard that the road will kill me if the other vehicles don't. How bad is the road? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being race track and 10 being dirt track.
    3. How bad is the traffic? On a scale of 1-10, 1 being a backroad after midnight and 10 being Silk Board at rush hour.

    Points to bear in mind:
    1. I have to be back in office on the 30th. Hence planning to be in Bangalore before sunset of 29th.
    2. I don't have much prior experience with long distance - my solo riding experience consists of one 330 km run from Bangalore to a village beyond Tirupati and one 290 km ride from Bangalore to Bharachukki and back, via Talakad.
    3. Although I'm not much of a shutterbug, if there are any specific scenic places which are good for taking photos, please include them in the route. As long as the total distance is within 400 km, I'm willing to take small deviations here and there.

I would like to maintain a pace of at least 80 kmph on the tarmac, and around 30-40 kmph on the ghat section (of course, depending on the traffic/road conditions.) Is this feasible? If yes, how long would I take to cover the distance?

Please do add your valuable comments and advice. I'm really looking forward to this trip. (A travelogue will follow when this trip happens.) Thanks!

Hey, me and my friend did a trip to bangalore - sakleshpur - bisle - subramanya 2 weeks back, so from our experience the road till Hassan is amazing, from Hassan to sakleshpur the roads are good but no divider and you will be able to feel the traffic.
Coming to shiradi ghat, half of the ghat is fine , the rest till gundya (end of the ghat) its dirt road (on a scale of 0-10 - (0 or lower))
after that the road is fine from what i have heard.
So my suggestion would be leave early so that u can cross the ghat before noon when traffic is medium or less.

Hi ,You can also try the Mysore - Madikeri - Puttur - Uppinangadi route ,the roads are in good shape ,the ghats are a dream to ride in and if you start early from Bangalore you can avoid the traffic on Blr - Mysore part .Slightly longer but you will enjoy the ride .There are some interior roads from Sullia via Subramanya to Uppinangady if you are the adventurous type but road conditions may be variable.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Since my previous trips saw me carrying only clothes, water and some candy bars for the ride, I just want to know if there's something else I should be carrying for this ride.

    So... if I've understood correctly,

Bangalore to Hassan - Excellent road
Hassan to Sakleshpur - good road
    Sakleshpur onwards - horrible roads

I'm planning to leave from Bangalore around 4.30 AM. Would that be fine?

Thanks mate, going via Puttur does seem to be a safer option than the treacherous Shirdi ghat. But Sullia to Uppinangady via Subramanya... isn't that a longer route? As per the map, that appears to be a long detour; correct me if I'm wrong.

As i mentioned Puttur route is the safer option when you need to reach your destination on time. There are a lot of inner roads in the Sullia - Subramanya - Uppinangadi route which make it slightly shorter but you need to know them and the conditions are variable and narrow ,but it has more greenery and adventurous ride .As long as you have a well maintained bike it should be fine ,carry original documents and bike manual ,the route you are passing through has most service centres ,just check up on it and have a safe ride.

    Hi,

I am also planning for a bike trip mostly 3 guys and three bikes from Jan 25th to Jan 28. Below is the plan

25th: evening 7.00 pm start from Bangalore -> Hassan and reach Hassan by 11.00 pm. Overnight stay in Hassan
26th: morning 7.30 Hassan to Sakleshpur (Manjarabad fort), donigal railway station, aluvalli railway tunnel, and head back towards kelagur thrpugh mudigere. Roam around kelagur, kudremukh (some waterfalls and viewpoints) and night stay near kelagur.
27th: morning 7.30 head towards Mangalore along with sight seeing through Charmadi ghat road. Reach Mangalore by 2.00-2.30. visit beach and depart from Mangalore by 5.00 pm towards Sakleshpur and reach Sakleshpur by 9.00.
28th: Morning 8.00, start return journey towards bangalore.

I want some suggestions on the timings and view points if I can cover all the places with reasonable time spent at each spot ( will be mostly helpful if can list must-see places ). Also if there are more time needs to be spent or there are more spots to see in the ghats itself, I can omit visiting mangalore and beach. Also please suggest if it is safe to ride on bike through shiradi ghat through night in bike.

    Thanks in advance

^Shiradi Ghat is now closed for traffic. So reaching Sakleshpura from Mangaluru in 4 hours is not possible.
