    Default Enfield Diesel!

The first time I heard a Diesel Bullet was back in 2012. I had just finished running in my CBR 250 and was cruising on Poonamalee High road when I heard the chugging of a diesel engine. It was a Bullet! Emitting a lot of smoke, this locomotive on two wheels made a deep, sonorous rumble that I felt in my bones..

It made all the petrol bullets sound like scooters, and I thought to myself that if I ever get one, it would be a diesel!

After a bit of research, I found that the motor is actually a pump from Lombardini, made in India by Greaves. It makes around 6 bhp, 1.45kgm of torque. Delivers 60-80 kmpl, and has a speed of 70 kph.

Reading reviews online has me confused. Some say, it's maintenance is high, and parts are scarce, but others say it ran 6 years without needing even an oil change!
Even a Honda can't do that!

Kick starting is easy once you know the method according to the owners.

    Now, to the question : Any diesel Bullet owners on Xbhp, I would love to hear from you. I'm browsing through olx and found a couple of bikes I like;

How do I guage the condition of the engine? The rest of the bike can be easily serviced by normal Bullet mechanics, the engine condition is what I know nothing about.

How do I source parts of the engine in South India? Are there any diesel Bullet mechanics in Kerala/TN?

TIA. Those of you wondering why I need one, well, it's the closest thing to owning a train engine in India below a lakh. There are a couple of good, winding roads in Kerala that are best sampled at 40 kmph in the mornings.

I live 100 kms from Ooty. The distance isn't much of an issue, it's language. I know only a bit of Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi. English is the only one I know properly.

I am very much interested to learn about Diesel bullets inside out, and when the time is right, get my own mini locomotive. Do share the details of the shop, along with address by P.M.

    Thank you for the approval.
There are bikes on olx, some just a few kms away for sale, but I would want more knowledge from a third party before buying one. Sellers wouldn't reveal any faults. The average price is around ₹80,000 for a well maintained model.

Knowledge Update : The diesel Bullet engine can be serviced in the diesel auto workshop. All spares are shared with Greaves pumpset, genset and are available.

A good, well maintained Diesel Bullet gives off less smoke, and sounds like a petrol engine.

When buying one, keep in mind there are two main types of Diesel Bullets : Original Sooraj ones, and converted units.

The original company Diesel Bullets have slightly different engine cover from the converted Bullets. The converted Bullets are nothing but a standard Bullet with the petrol engine swapped for the Greaves Diesel engine. They need to be endorsed in the RC book, else they are illegal.

My Dad owned original sooraj for about 20 years!! It had undergone lot of transformations due course of ownership like entire front fork and headlight assembly had been replaced with bullet.

@manojkrishnaks - How long does the engine and gearbox last on average?

I met one guy who didn't change the oil in two years! Bike was giving off black smoke though.

Had a word with owner of diesel bullet
The maintainence of diesel bullet is at par with petrol one
though the sound of engine is more
about spares they are available readiliy here in north ,cant say about south
the reduction in sound and vibrations can only be controlled by a very experienced mechanic, try locating one before you buy else you can land in trouble

also he said that sometimes vibrations are so high that sometimes it becomes impossible to ride it
specially if you ride it on a cold engine

regading black smoke,it is emitted by all diesel engines ,whether car or bike

    cant say about engine oil
    he changes it every month
