LOL! Yeah, this is exactly what happened to me when I told my parents and friends when I told them about my plans to buy a bike.
I've done a fair bit of research and will be able to help you out, especially since my budget is the same as yours!

But first, you need to tell us what exactly are you going to use the bike for? That will help decide the kind of bike suited to you.

Dude!
I hate full sus bikes......... they keep bobbing up and down and wear you out quickly on paved roads.......... but for offroading, they rock!

I don't know much about full sus bikes. Try bikeszone.com forum...... it's a dedicated forum for cyclists. I'm sure someone there can help you out!
Ciao!

thanx for replying raghav. this thread was dead for a long time.
well im looking for a hybrid or a road bike. road bike being the more preffered. the only one which comes in my budget is the fomas road king deluxe.i went through some of its review in bikeszone.com. the opinions are mixed. is it possible to get a good used road bike for my budget which is 8k max?
i would be mainly using it for commuting to college and fitness. with occasional weekend rides.

I think the Fomas is a great deal!
But you better check with guys who ride road bikes, since I am more into MTBs and tourer friendly rides.

A touring bike is one which you will use for a very long distance ride. I think they are very specialized to their job, but in India, I haven't heard of even one!
Most people I know make do with hardtail MTBs.
People have gone all the way to Ladakh on these bikes!!!

In the low budget segment, the Hero Thunder MTB is very good.
