Default Looking for a new bike

    Hi guys,

I am looking for a new bike. Possibly, BSA mach or Hero Hawk or some other bike of the same kind.

I am 21 years old weighing 60kgs and I'm 5.7 inches tall. I am buying a bike for fitness purpose and I am looking forward to grow a few cms if that's possible. Daily commuting would be 20-25 kms.

My budget is around 4k but I am willing to spend a little more for a better deal.

Kindly let me know which bike should be suitable for me. I will be buying one within a couple of days.

I think for 4K you will just get the entry level gear less cycles.
I would recommend buying a gear less and update it to geared

    Default Moongose Switch Back Sport

I want some reviews on this Mongoose Switch Back Sport. In Pune, I am getting a deal of 14K for this at Aarti cycles, its a 2011 version. MRP @16K for 2011 version, I guess. Specs are almost similar with the 2012 version.

Frankly i would suggest you to save up a bit more and buy one of the entry level model from rockrider or schwinn. You wont enjoy riding on the entry level el chipo bikes.

As the prices of bikes in general have gone up, the deal looks good enough to me. Only thing are the shimano tourney gear system. Shimano accera and altus are the once to prefer if you spending that kind of money. Look around for deals on khs alite 150/300, trek 3700/350/4300, rockrider 5.2/5.3, Merida bikes. Be open to good deals on used bikes. Also are you sure about mountain bikes? Usage?

Yeah, first even I had a doubt on my mountain bike usage, as mostly I would be riding on tarmac (but now I am planning to do some mountain riding on weekends).....I knew a hybrid bike would be a right choice for me. But I am very tight on budget, a decent hybrid bike comes @20K+ only. The cheapest hybrid bike I came across is the montra blues @17.5K (yes now the prices have gone up)

Also, then I came across this mongoose switch back on which I am getting a real good deal, otherwise this bike was also out of my budget.....so now my decision changed from a hybrid bike to mountain bike.

As we all know the prices of all bikes have gone up......the likes of trek, merida, RR all are out of my budget.(not interested in firefox & schnell)

Now lets talk about these shimano tourney gear system. Are they really that bad? I know, Shimano accera and altus are the once to prefer, but again the budget problem.

    Hi Oberoi,

for a budget of 4k, you will get a BSA Photon (3.8k now).
Hero hawk is 5200 in Bangalore.

coming to your 20-25km daily commute, it needs a bit of practice to get comfortable with that distance and that to on a bicycle like photon.

If you are hell bent to buy a bicycle in 4k, i suggest you to buy a BSA photon, get used to it and after some time fix gears to it. Fixing gears will cost you 2000 to 2500.

I commute to office daily (18+18) on a Btwin Rockrider 5.0 ( a MTB) the cost now is < = 10k, I bought it for 7500. If you want a very good bicycle with a decent budget. Try that.

    All the best

    Default Safety of Cheap Bikes

I hope this is not the wrong place to ask, but how safe are cheap bikes, specifically when it comes to braking ? I remember when I was a kid I had a nasty accident or two because my mini bicycle had these shoe brakes that were extremely weak to stop bicycle from a good speed (and I used to love overspeeding on a bicycle before I realized the err of my ways ).

I am looking at cheap (read: cheapest possible) easy to service road (strictly for use on normal tarmac) bicycles. Looking at Hero Hawk in particular. Either that or these bicycles that also have an electric motor where pedal+electricity combination can be used. But are they safe when it comes to braking power ? I'm referring to braking from speeds like 30-40 km/h which I can easily reach on certain stretches I normally frequent.

    hi MHG,

For your information, Hero hawk current price is 5k+ in Bangalore.
If you are looking for cheapest (a/c to you), try a roadster (doodwala cycle or called uncle cycle). A used roadster will come in less than 1000. My neighbor got it. They are solidly built, bullet proof frames, easily maintainable, bicycles.

Electric bicycles are very costly and thats a known fact.

The hero hawk is good. Though the brakes can be a let down. Buy it ride it and if you feel the need, upgrade the brakes. The frame is good.

Also if you like, take a look at Rockrider 5.0. But its something like 8 grand or so.. Or look for second hand cycles (not indian brands)
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Totally agree on Hero hawk Brakes. they are crappy.
As Krishna mentioned, if you are looking for cheapest then go for a used raodster(doodhwalla bike)
