Perhaps a miniscule number of us are even aware of who cleans our car every morning, who drops the newspaper at our door everyday like clockwork or how that gas cylinder gets delivered to our place. In all probability, all this is done by a man who moves around on a humble man powered one-generation old bicycle. Such men are teeming all over India in unfathomable numbers, carrying out millions and millions of such mundane yet vital tasks every day. All on their two wheels. If their bicycles are taken off road, chances are that the infrastructure of India will collapse sooner than you think. You will have to source the newspaper yourself, run for the cooking gas and go to the ‘sabji-wallah’ in a car, that in all probability, will be too wide for the narrow by-lanes of the markets.

The fact that there is too much disparity in India makes most of us urbanites ignore it consciously, but deep down we know it’s just not right.

Then how do we justify calling a set of two wheels worth in excess of 10, 00,000 rupees a Superbike? And is just the ownership of a bike like this entitlement enough for someone to be called a ‘Super-biker’?

Frankly, I have always seen the term ‘Super-biker’ as outrageous, especially when it is used for a guy who just buys a bike as a status symbol and is zilch when it comes to actually using it past a weekend city ride with similar guys. But, hey this is India. If you own one of these machines you are a demi-god in the eyes of the lesser motorcyclists and media who scrounge the ‘galis’ of metros with these kinds of ‘Super-bikers’ to fill up their pages and get the editor’s thumbs up. It is not their fault; this is what people in general want to see.

Almost every biker, including me, started with this understandable fascination for these expensive crotch rockets. They are after all every biker’s wet dream. But xBhp as an entity has consciously matured out of this mindset and has demonstrated that you need to actually use these machines to be worthy of being called a biker, leave alone a ‘Super-biker’. After all you don’t become a public servant just by travelling in public transport.
So the next time you see someone on a ‘big bike’, don’t be awestruck. Think of what would you have done if you had the same bike to be worthy of being called a “Super-biker’. There is no real earned dignity in that term other than the little bit lent by the machine. Effectively nothing from the rider.
And finally, don’t think of the people commuting on the bicycles on the road as someone you can ignore. They are the ones who understand the real value of a motor powered machine, and they are the ones who don’t take everything for granted...

well said . in india there will be 2 roads. one for the bike rider and one for the bike owner. i should say half the super bike guys are sort of say the bike owners category. even John Abraham, had a mention about this( about how his friend told his servant to show the bike) in his interview to you.

both categories enjoy the ownership part. the real bikers enjoy the rides and the owners love the talk and the fame. thats the difference.

Respect to the real Super-Bikers. You are so true Sunny. There are so many posers out there who have the money to buy high cc bikes and then think they are the masters of the universe. But its these people who ride on dust-filled roads everyday and everywhere to earn their living and treat their steeds as part of their family, as source of their income deserve this title.

And Sundeep, thank you for writing this article,touched my heart it did.

My perception has changed a lot after joining XBHP & knowing that the fact which makes a biker special is just not the bike he owns but how balanced he is as a rider & how much respect he has for biking. I do DROOL over any SBK on any given day but NOW I know that most of the guys who owns these SBK are just show offs. They just like to zoom to nearby Hookah Bar & impress few PYTs who are themselves so "FOOH-FOOH" on Week Ends. There are few SBK owners, including the ones who are XBHP members, who can genuinely be called SUPER BIKERS as they are ready to take their POWERFUL Mosters to treacherous roads & condition, test the limits on race tracks.
But perception is changing & for good. Now guys like me also think of owning an SBK someday & take it to the hills & mountains & enjoy the ULTIMATE Nirvana.
