Richard sums things up pretty well in that short quote and it's something that the vast majority of 'wider' society will never understand. Nice post dude.

I'll add something that's been going around by email here in the UK among bikers. Sums things up here too! It is from a western U.S. perspective and draws on the unwarranted image that some of the media have portrayed of bikers (in the west) for the past 40 years or so. Not the happiest of pieces but worth posting, I think. It kind of unites bikers and the lifestyle and the difference we feel to the rest of society, who limit the risks they take but take risks with others' lives.
You Didn't See Me

But, You Didn't See Me

I saw you hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line.
But, you didn't see me put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.

I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk.
But, you didn't see me playing Santa at the local mall.

I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant.
But, you didn't see me attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.

I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by.
But, you didn't see me driving behind you when you tossed your cigarette butt out the car window.

I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children.
But, you didn't see me when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless kids.

I saw you stare at my long hair.
But, you didn't see me and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.

I saw you roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves.
But, you didn't see me and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.

I saw you look in fright at my tattoos.
But, you didn't see me cry as my children where born and how I have their names written upon my heart.

I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.
But, you didn't see me going home to be with my family.

I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.
But, you didn't see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.

I saw you yelling at your kids in the car.
But, you didn't see me pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me.

I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.
But, you didn't see me squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn.

I saw you race down the road in the rain.
But, you didn't see me get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.

I saw you run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time.
But, you didn't see me trying to turn right.

I saw you cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in.
But, you didn't see me leave the road.

I saw you waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.
But, you didn't see me…I wasn't there.

I saw you go home to your family.
But, you didn't see me…Because I died that day you cut me off.

I was just a biker...
A person with friends and a family.

BUT, YOU DIDN'T SEE ME!!

It's also a reminder to take care out there! Ride free!

To each his own..I'm sure this applies for every biker and the human being, and they will all agree. So makes more sense to ride/wrench/enjoy whatever aspect of biking you like and have a good time. No sense pinpointing

Dear reader,

I wish you warm welcome to the Hard Torque section. Now if you were reading this article on xBhp it would be fair of me to assume you have at least a tiny bit of interest in biking. The title of this article is fairly clear-cut, so ask yourself… Are you a biker?

If you said “No” then I wouldn’t bother much and just let it be. You must be just another passing visitor to this site. But if you said “Yes” with a puffed chest, let me ask you again, “Are you a biker?” Well to me a biker is not every TDH who knows how to ride a motorcycle or rides one to work or college on a daily basis. Oh no sir, its definitely much more than that to me. You just don’t earn that tag by posing on a flashy bike or blabbering specs of every bike ever to roam the face of this earth.

Now let me take a step back and get to what I was writing about, being a biker by choice. A motorcycle is probably the first motorized means of transport to be owned by a person in India. Cheap, fast (compared to car in city) and good mileage makes it the ideal choice (or no choice) for a college going youngster or someone who is drawing his first salary. Post the boom in the Indian economy there is no dearth of cheap and fun 150cc+ bikes that are positioned as performance bikes. So its not a wonder that someone who buys one of those gets carried away, pulls out a few stunts, pops a few wheelies or a long ride here and there. The self-proclaimed biker goes on with his shenanigans till his biking saga is brought to an abrupt halt by a new car (or an accident). So where is that poser biker now? Well he is no more; it was just another fleeting biker to whom a bike was a joy toy for a while. He is wiser now and has probably moved on to a car with his own alibi for not using the bike anymore.

So would you still call yourself a biker? Would you hop on your bike and ride a couple of hundred miles without reason? Would you spend a couple of hours rubbing that polish on the tank just to get that special shine? Would you respect the sanctity of the road and take care of the safety while riding? When you get older and your priorities change, would you still keep riding? Would you call yourself a biker by choice or a bike since you had no choice?

Now why all this rant about such a small thing as a bikers tag?

This article being in the Hard Torque section means its more than any other trip log or bike news. Its about being able to relate to what Hard Torque is about, yes it is all bike talk, but what might go unnoticed is the author’s extra ounce of passion towards biking that would go into each article that’s up here.

So the next time you call yourself a biker, mean it from your heart. And know that there are scores of others here equally passionate about our passion. I thank you for reading on so far. There’s more to come in Hard Torque from us. Ride safe.

Biker by choice…

I am riding on 13 night from Ludhiana to Chandigarh to pick up Desi so as to attend the G2g on 14 morning!!! am I a Biker???
riding to Delhi and back wud cost me around 1000rs(aproximately the same price for a to and fro ticket of Shatabadi) and not to forget the Chill of the winter Nights( I will be pushing off By9 in the evening from Ldh to Chd which is aprox 100 kms..thn frm Chd to delhi which is again 270kms to attend a G2G at 8 on the Sunday morning and then back to ludhiana which is arox 300+ kms.)
But what for? just to see a Superbike(read- a Mighty Beast/piece of machine)
No, thats to ride for the love of Riding!
insane as some may call it, but I dumped a Decent Job of a Branch Manager in an MNC to pick up a Job of a Marketing Manager with a Local Company! why??? for some extra Moolahz?? definately Not, am getting paid less now!
then why??
Because, as a Branch Manager, I was not getting the time to RIDE.
now as a Marketing Manager, I Get to ride day in day out! and I dnt Drive a Car to Work( I have One!), I Ride!
Because, no matter Car is a Bigger, Better, Safer Vehicle thn my Zma, but then, somehow, I can Not resist the feeling of winding Kissing my Cheeks.
I have a Car because that s more of a Family Vehicle, a status symbol!
a Bike on the other hand is My LOVE!
yes, a lot of us Ride cause they have nothing else to commute on, but then, there still are fews, who would rather Ride then to Drive!
My Bike is my Baby, a look at her in the morning gives me a sort of energy, a glance at her after a day's long and hard ride gives me a satisfaction...and miles to go before I sleep!!!!
Biking for me is a religion, where I follow the simple rule..Love and respect others as you would want them to love and respect you.
am not a stunter, not a trained mechanic or something of that sort..am just a simple human being whole loves those motorised two wheels.
I guess I am a BIKER

Thumbs up In my humble opinion...

Definition of a BIKER by Joaquim Gonsalves:
"A person who's entire world revolves around motorcycles. He/she considers their bike to be their partner. They treat their steeds like they were human. They kiss it goodnight. They sit beside it, stare and just smile. All they dream of is bikes. Bikers wish to die on their bikes or with their bikes.
Not everyone 'gets' 'BIKEISM' & 'BIKERS' but to us, that doesn't even matter.
A biker is a person in love.
in love with his/her bike.
There's no arguing with this breed
of Humans.
They live for bikes. And bikes are their life-blood."

I'd like to clarify that I'm also a relatively moderate follower of my religion. The one I got by birth and not by choice. Ofcourse later, certain personal incidents have lead me to believe that there is a God. Which is why i follow it. But let me also say that, even though bikeism is undeniably materialistic it IS spiritual to an extent.
For a Biker, there's a fine line between worldly pleasures and spiritual needs.
To me its a constant battle. Always thanking my creator for the blessing of a motorcycle while at the same time thinking of ways to please Him by using a motorcycle for good causes.

I do not intend to start a debate on religions, SO PLEASE DO NOT!

Yet some of you may say that the two dont mix. But thats a debate for another site probably.

My point is, to a Biker it may always be a battle between the society's perception and family commitments. And those who can strive through all this and still ride for the heck of it at the end of the day are what you can term as Bikers by Choice.

P.S.: I do hope that my post hasn't affected anyone's religious sentiments

Peace.
God Bless!

But as long as we are in the flow, let us enjoy the wind in the face.
That is what sums it up for me. Its about the best tool for the occasion - and enjoying it while it lasts.

For arrow straight roads like Rajasthan, I'd prefer a train, a bus or a car or a land rover for dune bashing. Our desi bikes are a waste of time for the same.

For the mountains, bikes anyday. For horrible no roads/ interiors, again bikes!

Just not worth it beating drums about "being a biker" or singing paeans about it.

I can tell you the symptoms though. When you hear of 'something' you are passionate about your senses get a high. Passion drives you to be inquisitive and forces you to see more of 'that thing'. When you meet a bunch of people passionate about the 'same thing', the bonding is like quick fire. Once you have felt the passion, it leaves a mark in your memory. Even if you have parted from that 'thing' for a breif while, nostalgia or certain events will remind of that mark.

People who are/were bikers by choice, in my opinion, would have seen 'bike/motorcycle' in place of 'thing' in the above paragraph.
You have spoken my mind. Well penned thoughts here.

Well,

I'm no expert in writing.
But, reading all previous write-ups in this thread does stir my thought; or for that matter everyone's thought on what biking is??

I feel its about feeling related to your bike; whichever it may be and to realise that without it we feel incomplete. It's about going on ride for no reason or cleaning your bike while you skip bathing.

It's as much about riding at insane speeds as about feeliing breeze at 40 kmph. Oh!! I have so many things to mention but.....

I don't know if I'm a biker or not and nor do I want to be recognised as a professional biker..... I feel ecstatic when my frens call me by my bike's name (aka Pulsar Boy !!); when people very close to me tell that I would come in way of any pain for my bike.

How right they are??

I still enjoy riding my BOXER CT as much as Pulsar. That's biking to me..... I still don't know if I'm a biker ??? nor do I wanna know??

My apologies for all grammatical mistakes. As I said, m not good in writing.
