Recently I bought a Yamaha Galdiator RS. Can someone help me with follwing few queries:
1) What are the cautions that one need to take for a new bike so that its smooth and give good mileage in future.My friends talk about speed limits till 1000 KMs etc.
2) How do we decide when to change gears while riding,it depnds on the speed or RPM?Also if you can tell at what RPM/Speed which gear should be used, that will help a lot.

well it all depends on the engine rpm.....u can use the tachometer for that....but its better to feel the sound of the engine and shift it.............dont rip the bike........every engine behaves like a small child IMO......first the child learns to walk slowly, then the running part.........first 1000kms is the usual setting time for the engine........

dude gears are for power transmission for different terrain and condition. when to change gear is similarly highly depend upon same .. for example u can not run up the slope[hill] with top gear .. hence u switch to a lower gear so getting the feel of the bike is necessary , more over higher gears need a certain amt of min revs to function optimally , so drive and learn.

u can take care of bike as usual i.e. timed servicing, proper lubrication , basically read the user Manual thoroughly.

Run it in properly Libs... I don think i ran in my bike properly in the beginning as i was to eager to rip... N hence don get great mileage now on my SS... But the performance is fine though...

Yes first 1000 km is the mandatory run in period... But u could extend that a bit too depending on your feel of the bike... Many people even do a run in for 2000 km...

The run in speeds depend on the rpm... So keep it below 4.5k rpm as much as possible... After may be around 800 km u could take it upto 5k or 5.5 k rpm for very very small duration of time... like seconds... Even during your run do not jus ride on one speed constantly... Like don keep it on 50 on top gear on all times... Vary your speeds...
About changing gears... You'll get used to it... Like viv. nomad said it depends on a lot of things... But well if your looking for mileage in the SS... Keep it below 60... If you dont want mileage and want to enjoy some revving after ur run-in you could even change gear at 9.5k rpm
