  • Need Info: Chandigarh - Udaipur

    I need some info folks:

Probably in the first week of March I would be riding to Udaipur from here and I have narrowed down on the following routes:

    1) Chandigarh - Bathinda - Hanumangarh - Suratgarh - Bikaner (Nh-15) - Deshnok - Nagaur - Jodhpur - Pali - Sirohi - Udaipur

    2) Chandigarh - Bathinda - Hanumangarh - Suratgarh - Bikaner - Deshnok - Nagaur - Ajmer - Chittaurgarh - Udiapur

    3) Chandigarh - Bathinda - Hanumangarh - Rawatsar - Sardarsahar - Ratangarh Salasar - Kishangarh - Chittaurgarh - Udiapur

    Now the questions are:

    1) Due to shortage of time, I would be riding all through the night and some (~4-5hrs) parts of the day. So which is the safest in terms of road safety at night?

    2) Which route has plenty of directions and roadsigns/hoardings/ miletones so that I dont get lost and waste time unnecessary.

    3) Which is the shortest?

    4) And most importantly, how are the road conditions?

These routes are extracted from maps, so if you have any other route that you feel I could take please let me know, keeping this in mind:
    • I do not want to take Chd -Delhi - Jaipur road
    • I do not want to go via Hisar - Churu - Sikar - Jaipur
The idea is just to ride, meet up with a few friends and ride back to Delhi.

    Looking forward to your respone.

    Thanks in Advance
    Vaibhav

      1) Chandigarh - Bathinda - Hanumangarh - Suratgarh - Bikaner (Nh-15) - Deshnok - Nagaur - Jodhpur - Pali - Sirohi - Udaipur
This would be the most 'fun' - implying most of this route goes through the Thar 'backwaters' - if I use a metaphor. But distinct route markers could be an issue. In fact this is the longest and most round-about way of reaching Udaipur from Chandigarh. Guess we shall name it 'Vaibhav Raasta' .
      2) Chandigarh - Bathinda - Hanumangarh - Suratgarh - Bikaner - Deshnok - Nagaur - Ajmer - Chittaurgarh - Udiapur
Again 'fun' though the last but substantial stage (Ajmer-Chittaurgarh-Udaipur) is NH, lots of trucks and it is sort of unusual to go from Ajmer to Chittaurgarh. In fact the Ajmer - Udaipur route goes via Rajsamand. If you want to go to Chittaurgarh from Ajmer, you end up meeting the kishengarh - Udaipur road at Nasirabad. That would be an unnecessary detour. Once you get to Ajmer, you might as well carry on to Udaipur via Bewar, Rajasamand and Nathdwara.

      3) Chandigarh - Bathinda - Hanumangarh - Rawatsar - Sardarsahar - Ratangarh Salasar - Kishangarh - Chittaurgarh - Udiapur
Am not very sure about the road conditions from Hanumangarh till Kishangarh (as this route is mostly about state highways and 'forgotten' roads and I doubt if there will be markers or people around at odd hours for you to ask) but from there on till Udaipur, its the GQ. 4-lane, light traffic, bland scenery but you can really make up time on this stretch. I and Sunny could do some really fast and consistent riding here on the R1's. We averaged about 130 during one hour and a half stretch .

Safety on the road even at night is usually not an issue throughout Rajasthan. Route directions vis a vis hoardings, milestones etc could be a problem on the back-roads.

Shortest? - Distance wise or time wise. Time-wise - Chandigarh - Delhi - Jaipur - Udaipur will get you there the quickest.

I guess this route is out of the question then

I did some research. Hanumangarh to Ratangarh is a toll road, well maintained with absence of unknown potholes that the NH is known for. Also the Sujangarh - Kishangarh stretch is good, as confirmed from a friend. And since you have already mentioned the Kishangarh - Udaipur to be the GQ, than I believe it would be wise to take this route only.

Distance wise, Chandigarh - Delhi - Udaipur would be ~940, and agreed, also the fastest. But, I would be taking this route on the return, the other way around, and thus want to avoid it while going.

MapMyIndia states the Hanumangarh - Kishangarh - Udiapur route from Chandigarh to be ~980, only 40 kms longer. As of now, this seems to be the most tempting way out

Thanks agian for the information, sir.

Pretty useful research and good choice. Though you will usually end up craving for some 10 more horses from your bike .

Take plenty of water and soft tissues to clean your visor. This is mustard harvest time in this region and you'll see about a million bugs spattered on you and your helmet visor per kilometer. After a while it really becomes crazy. 10 kms at 80+ and one can barely see through the visor.

On the Kishengarh - Udaipur route, there might be some confusion for you at Putholi crossing (or is it Chanderiya) near the diversion to Chittorgarh. There's a bridge under construction and the 4 lane GQ becomes one single lane through the town. Beyond it, it is a maze of concrete roads going over and under (almost like downtown Chicago). Here you need to switch from NH79 to NH 76. (NH 79 goes to Indore).

And yes, just before you get to Chanderiya, there's a BP petrol pump (will be on your right when you're going towards Udaipur) which has a 'Ghar Dhaba'. Clean place and good food.

Will keep that in mind, though I believe bugs should not be a menace at night. And since it is a few weeks before I ride out, I would keep pestering you with questions as and when I face uncertainities

Just an OT for Old Fox

Do you live over there? How many times a year do you visit that place? Man, you just dont fail to surprise us with your immense knowledge bank. ok, help me too, what's the shortest and the best way from Dwarka to Rajendra Place!

              ok, end of OT

@ Kurt: I am amazed to see another trip on charts. But for this office, I would have loved to try to keep pace with you. And I guess, few years from now, you will have to start moving out of india, there wont be any place left for you to tour to. All the best

P.S: I have a brand new 100/90-18 MRF tubeless with me. I would love to give it to you for free if you promise me to put up my name on all of the pics you take mid way so that I can post it on the best traveloge section. LOL

Update: I would be taking the Hisar - Churu - Sikar - Kuchhaman City - Kishangarh route. The reason being that now there are two other motorcyclists with me and who are eager to traverse through Churu. It is also shorter by 160 kms.

If everything goes as per plan, would be leaving this Friday evening.

                    Returned today at 5am.

It was a 3 day trip, out of which two days were spent riding. The second day, I spent visiting lakes in Udiapur, and catch up on some rest.

                    Day 1: Chandigarh - Hisar - Churu - Salasar - Didwana - Kishangarh - Bhilwara - Chittaurgarh - Udaipur: 1010 kms - 18 hrs

Day 2: In and around Udaipur

                    Day 3: Udaipur - Chittaurgarh - Bhilwara - Kishangarh - Jaipur - Rewari - Jhajjar - Rohtak - Panipat - Chandigarh: ~ 1000 kms - 19 hrs

All in all, it was fun but also a tad boring. Long empty arrow straight highways. After a while, it starts getting monotonous

The worst stretch was Jaipur - Rewari! A pain to be precise.
