Hello,
Owner of Pulsar 200, my bike isn't returning optimum average from last 4000-5000 kms. It has drastically reduced down to mere 28 kmpl from 42 kmpl. My bike has done 18000kms up till now.Lately had some problems but now resolved, like changed my chain sprocket set, changed the clutch plates but not the pressure plates as they were fine because the pickup and top speed were affected. But the bike isn't returning proper average. Plz help me out. Urgent as i have to travel a lot and i struggling to get good average.

Is your bike completely stock? (without any additions like K&N filter wid bigger jets,FFE etc.)
have u checked whether the carburettor is running a rich mixture? Is mileage the only issue or are u experiencing any other problems while riding? (as those problems might help in detecting mileage problem) What about engine oil is the bike drinking too much oil too? try monitoring the engine oil levels. Members here would be able to help you better if you elaborate on above points.

have the tappets been checked and adjusted?
- have you replaced the spark plug and filter ( if not in a long time, then a good time to do it now ) - Are your tyres leaking air? - Are you getting your bike filled from the same petrol pump only?? ( if yes, please change pump and check )

Relating to above queries :
1. My bike is completely stock, no mods done. 2. Haven't been able to check the carburetor mixture, will check it soon. 3. Mileage is the only issue. 4. No, the bike isn't drinking oil at all (Using Motul 300v 15w50), level no problem. 5. Have duly replaced the spark plug and air filter. 6. No, bike tyres aren't leaking any air (Psi : F - 25, R - 40). 7. Yes I had been using the same petrol pump for the last 3 yrs (Indian Oil), no xtra premium only normal unleaded petrol. 8. The tappets have been checked and adjusted, since i got the whole head clean and also checked with the engine compression (mentioned in the service book i.e. to be checked at every 15000kms) Hope I resolved all ur queries genuinely, now plz help me out guyies. Thanx.

40psi for Pulsar's rear tyre is standard recommendation? Unrelated to the problem, but I am just curious.

Well from my side i can only say check the carburettor mixture as that is the only thing remaining unchecked, rest all seems ok. If it is running too rich a mixture then you will notice-
1. Too much low end torque and thumpy/beaty engine sound especially at low rpms. 2. Electrode of the spark plug will be dark black in colour. Ideally it should be brown/light brown in colour which indicates optimum mixture.

If the carb is tuned fine, then I believe it is a case of faulty valves and valve guides. Result: low mileage and black smoke from the exhaust Take it to the ASS and get it checked up.

NitinGirish is right, 40 psi is too much for the rear tyre.
I have a 220 and the recomended pressure is 28F and 32R(with pillion). I however keep it at 30 and 34 so that the pressure is never too low even if its not been checked in a while. Xtremebiker - check the recommended pressure ( will be on the LH side swingarm or in your manual) and keep them 2 counts higher just in case. Might not solve your mileage issue but better not to run on over/under inflated tyres.... |
