  • To cover or not to cover? That is the question!

I am studying in a college which is situated 50 Km close to the Cherapunji of the South, Agumbe (in Karnataka).
My Honda Unicorn along with many other bikes is being battered by rains (think in terms of 1 cm a day at times!) on campus. There are 2 schools of thought among us here:
    1. Cover the bike- 'to protect the machine from the rains'
    2. Don't cover it; 'it rusts quicker when covered, as the captured dampness between the cover and the bike harms the paint more than the rain itself.'

    Please advise!

Here're some of the ideas I can think about...
      1. Instead why not park somewhere to protect it from rain? Even if requires tipping the security once a while?
      2. Try getting or make a water proof motorcycle cover. It simply requires measuring your motorcycle in lengths & widths, approach some guys who stitch bags etc & ask them to make one.

Do 1 for now & 2 for long term solution.

What I do is quickly wipe the bike with a dry cloth before putting the cover on.

Apply wax over the painted parts, don't buff it in to much. The finish would not be that great but you would be protecting it. Apply anti rust over the chrome parts. And wash the other left out area such as the engine, etc with diesel once a week. If you have WD-40, spray generous amounts over these areas.

And after you've done all this. Cover it up. Your bike deserves to be dry like you.

Its always good to cover the bike during parking. And during rainy season the cover is very worth full.

Don't cover it; 'it rusts quicker when covered, as the captured dampness between the cover and the bike harms the paint more than the rain itself.'

The best solution as aargee said is a waterproof cover, its hardly cost you 250 bucks. The material which use for the umbrella, that fabric is best for the all season bike cover. Its very light and after folding its very compact. You can easily carry it any where.

              well
              interesting question my friend..

you are right, if one covers the bike and it rains, the speedo console get more moist from inside, so does the headlight...
the moisture never evaporates even when the rain stops due to the dampness..

i have so far never covered my bike,
use a good anti rust on chrome parts and metal parts..
apply ample of grease on the spark plug sides and you are well to go..
I've been doing it from past 7 years and works great..

just my opinion, at-least damage is low as compared to dampness.
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

You can now get waterproof and breathable covers... They do just the right job, but are a bit pricey though.
Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.

                  @All

                  Thanks for all your replies!
I do have the high quality Honda cover I got from the showroom when i bought the bike. It is water-tight. But I really find that the dampness seeps in inevitably when it's raining continuously for 4 months at the average rate of 110 mm per week. The dampness is just everywhere!
So as pointed out here- i'm going to get a wax/grease coating and anti-rust coating on the chrome parts. And I'll wait for the rains to stop in September.
Thanks again for the specific inputs on wax, diesel, grease and anti-rust paint. I'll go about and enquire what I get here...

Well, for one thing it's a hilly area with steep inclines all over. So the water keeps running toward low-lying areas, and no stagnation happens. Secondly, this place has been like this since forever! The geography, the wildlife (panthers, king cobras, pythons, peacocks, langurs and many more species !), the people, the vegetations...it's all somehow geared up for this. Only the tar roads take a beating after 4 months. They repair them till the next monsoons arrive and destroy them all over again.

Picture this: just this Friday (30th July), my place received 20.1 cm of rainfall in just 24 hours . Hell with it! Life goes on bro...

i believe that cherapunji is supposed to receive continuous rainfall and that too in enormous proportions...guess life goes on and they have adapted to it...

Reserve the word "high quality" until you look into one of those real motorcycle covers.

So the one you bought is not doing its job. If you love your motorcycle, better get one from abroad.

@Coolplay = Agumbe is well known for its rainfall & nothing can be done; people live with it. Trust me, you'll love driving through the ghat section.

                            Aargee,

Cover from abroad eh? Should be available in Manipal (with so many superbikes, foreign students and NRIs among the 10000 odd students in this township)..gotta check it out.

And yes, riding in these areas is pure bliss from October till February. There's greenery all round, the climate is cool and a number of places to see before you die are all here- Sita Falls, Kudremukh, Jog Falls, Agumbe (ghat roads, sunset point, forests)...
