Exclamation Unicorn in trouble

Hi friends!

Hope im posting this thread in the correct section.

I have a 2008 honda unicorn and it has run 16k+kms. currently residing in bangalore. This bike has never performed like a true unicorn. What i mean is the smoothness once it is on the run, that somewhat electric motor type feel. It has been grinding(noise with vibrations to tank and hbar) its way to reach speeds above 65 and 70 and a worse-than-splendor pick up at low speeds of 30 and 40. my thoughts when riding it is something is not connected well to engine.

Right now unfortunately i am stuck in a situation which is the worst ive come across.

I had gone to jc road yday at noon. I explained my trouble to a mechanic there. He looked a quiet type. He responded immediately after hearing the noise frm th bike " change clutch plates and adjust valve timing and the bike will become ultra smooth". I told him to go ahead. Work was carried out by his juniors.
NOTE: the noise till now was some thing like grr-grr. like some parts loose.

the order in which work was done:

1. clutch plates replaced with new(orig cost totally 145 along with packing. I think there only 4 plates in the cover. Think they are fibre. right?) Some rod in between the plates was hit with some tools. i saw some marks on it and asked what it was. he said he will repair it. (i wondered how and started doubting their work)

2. honda engine oil changed(800 ml * 2 = rs300) and clutch bell refitting done (170)

3. the bike was readied and started.
NOTE : Now, the engine started to make loud tik - tik -tik noise. the more the throttle given the higher the frequency of the tik - tiks

It sounded to me as if the valves making these noise.

3. The guys ask me whether this sound was there earlier. I said "not at all this is even worse".

4. Now he opens the head and clutch assembly again. Does some rotation on the gear box side. Checks something and tells me he needs oil pump wheel (fibre). Tells me to get it. I told him to do it as I am not aware of these things. RE fits everything and starts the bike. Once again the same noise. (Sounded to me like a Yam gladiator to me, remember driving one of my friends glad. Sorry if ive hurt any yam riders. I just mean to make ppl here understand the sound im talking about.)

5. Doesnt get the pump wheel. He tells me get the bike tommorow and also this thing from the showroom. Asks me to give 350 bcos everything was opened and refitted twice. Also tells me i will not charge you tommorow for the work.

Pls do advice me on what to do now as i feel really trapped/cheated.

Shall update you ppl with further info about service history and previous observations as well, as and when required and once this problem is solved.

Why didn't you approach a Honda Authorized Service Centre rather than some roadside mech? If clutch plates are gone, you'd have other issues as well. Forget the money you've spent there and go to the nearest Honda A.S.C. You can probably check the Unicorn Ownership thread to find if someone from Bengaluru has mentioned any good A.S.C.

I have been giving my bike for its regular services to a Honda ASC here in bangalore as well as chennai(where it originated from). I have not been satisfied with the answers I got from the honda guys.

FYI- I had given it for service to a Honda ASC in Jayangar oct 2010 (referred to by a guy). The guys here acknowledged my issues and did a service that cost around 2500. (I still have the parts bill and other invoice). For once i felt my issues were finally solved after this job. I was quite happy. After around 15-20 days the ride started to go back to its original state.

I had even tipped the mechanic guy 200 for this job. I assured him that henceforth the service be done by him alone.

After this i did not change my mind. I continued with 2 more services with the same guy. However I have not got the same smooth feel of the bike till now. Ive informed him regarding this often. He says we have to do tune the carb or your roads are dusty hence this noise.

Alright I said so if the roads here are dusty here what about the other unicorns in this area. How are they running without any issues?

Pls suggest me some solution for this new noise emerging because of a worn out oil pump wheel or something.

the tic-tic sound is probably because of loose tappets get the valve clearance adjusted also the cam chain tightened if necessary also to do this there is no need to open the clutch cover only the head cover need to be removed

i too owned a unicorn which was not smooth & it used vibrate as u said.....till 8k km i waited to open the engine myself as the A.S.S was not helpfull at any instance even after mail sent to honda...

when i opened the engine i found the bore to be scored (marks created by piston & rings) which was the reason for rough engine....i did a mod after that....

cam chain cannot be tightend...check for wear of cam chain tensioner, cam chain sproket which is located in the head.... valve seating or bent valves...at 16k clutch cannot be weared out....

if u have a good rebore mech in ur place bore the engine with the next size piston of .25, .5, .75, 1.0 sizes.......otherwise change the bore+piston kit which should be around 2.5k - 3k
thats better than any thing else..if do so seat the valves (bent change it)

Thanks for the info.

Please tell me if the oil pump wheel is the defective part due to which this noise started coming. I checked it out with a guy in jayanagar and he tells me it is probably the defective part because of which engine oil is not being pumped up and hence this noise. He also says the guys who did this job have not used proper tools for the work thereby hitting out on something and causing damage to the part. Can i trust this guy? What do you guys say? I will be glad to relieve the bike this one issue for now.

I would appreciate if anybody helps me out by guiding me to a trustworthy mechanic here.
