Guys, I've some question in my mind which keeps confusing me
1. Is Constant speed touring harmful for engine? For example continuous riding for hrs at 6k rpm 2. How to calculate rpm/hour in each gear 3. which is most thick & thin; 2t oil, 10w30 4t oil or fork oil 4. thermal shock; suppose I've ridden more than 300km continuous above 6k rpm, and rain hits(!) will it damage engine, exhaust, etc, etc.. |

As far as I know, if the bike is in good condition and is meant for touring, then these shouldn't be an issue. For example, if you ride a ZMA like this, it wont give any issue. But smaller bikes which are not originally meant for touring will heat up and might even seize.

For an engine with max torque at 6K, it is best to ride at 5 - 5.5K. That way, the engine will be having some reserve torque when you need to over take.
Touring on a 125 cc is easy if you maintain a few things like vehicle in top shape, periodic service every 2500 KM whether you think it needs it or not, proper air pressure, break of 10 mins every 100 KM on the highway whether you think its needed or not. If you follow this, then you can go a good 400 - 500 KM on a day comfortably. I have pushed my 125 CC to 700 KM a day.

Guys, there's conflicting ideas now..
rharish90 says- stay around 5.5k rpm and aargee says 75-80% so that's 7.5-8k rpm.. And guys I have done 796km in one day without problems & changed the oil at destination (dont wanna ruin my bike) but now I'm planning for Leh so advice me regarding that. |

1. Yes, I have heard that keeping same rpm is not good for the engine. RPM should keep changing. I don't know why though.
But it has nothing to do with redlining or heating. Keeping it at 6 for long hours is not recommended just to be on the safe side. See man, I have ridden my Pulsar 180 UG3 (which is a very heat prone engine) at around 7000-8000 rpm = (87-100 kmph) most of the time, on my trip to Jaipur. Kept changing rpms though. Since it has a 9000 rpm redline, I was satisfied with its performance during the trip. 2. RPM/ hour in each gear? You means Revolutions Per Hour, RPH?? Just multiply the rpm figure by 60. 3. Don't use 2T oil in forks. As far as I remember from my Yamaha service centre training, its the fork oil that's thinnest. But can't say. 4. This Jaipur trip was a 130 kms trip. And I did put water on the engine too. Believe me, it doesn't damage the engine/ exhaust in any way. Today's machines are made in such a way that rain doesn't affect them permanently. |
