Need opinion to upgrade SZR (153cc) to add more HP & broader tyr for ext.grip

Hi Friends,

I have one Yahamaha SZR (153 cc, black). I bought it on Jan'11. Now I want to go for more power & grip. But, budget does not permit me to have a new bike like R15 V.2 or CBR 250.

M thinking of to

1. fine tune the engine
2. Go for a smaller exhaust
3. Use a pair of broader tyre like FZ

I went to the local market in Pune and found the approximate value of the following

MRF Nylogrip zapper of Rs.3,500/-
Modified exhaust @Rs.1,500/-
Engine tweaking @Rs.Rs.10,000/- (The guy is saying the bike can gain a top speed of @150km/hr after the tweak??

Total cost will be approximate Rs.12k to 15k after burgening and marketing.

Now my question to all of you friends?

1. Is it possible to tweak the 153 cc engine to get a speed of @150km/hr? which is designed to give a max power of 12.1PS@7500 rpm and max torque of 12.8NM@4,500 rpm?

2. Will it be good to use a broad tyre for better grip?

3. Will the new exhaust will help in spend and look as it will weight 2.5 to 3 kg, the previous one was 5kg. Also it can be customized as per my design. (The welder is not going to use any welding technique for better pressure creation??)

I do use speed fuel daily basis and do a servicing from the local mechanic for every 1,000 km it clocks. I love the aerodynamics of the bike and really like it. I m looking for something which I can use to take my wife on weekend and also my daily commuting to office and my hobby of biking..

Lots of thing I know, but very passionate about the bike. Really looking for a good suggestion.....

1.What do you mean by fine tuning the engine?
A lot of things can be done like upjetting, re boring, etc,...

2.DONT CHANGE THE GOD DAMN EXHAUST!!!
One of the things i understood in xbhp is that exhaust isnt just a pipe welded to a bike, its highly complicated and very few people can make performance increasing exhausts which dont damage the engine, joel is one of them and he isnt making an exhaust for your bike model.

3.Broader tyres will mess with your swing arm, increase bike weight, reduce acceleration, reduce top speed and a lot more, IMO you have better quality tyres than my TVS tyres... be happy with them.

4.Again... what does the mechanic mean by engine tweaking?

A 153 cc engine can go 150kmph... but your bike is not made for such things...

Its good to know that you are passionate about your ride and biking . Now for the answers ,

1. Do not fit a 140 section tire as it will ruin the handling and performance. And you will need to change the swingarm as suggested by a fellow member.

2. Can you please ask your mechanic what work he would be doing in tweaking the engine and for what engine work is he asking 10k.

See 150 kmph is very much possible but only with proper mods which most of the mechanics dont know about and these mods can cost you a bomb !!

3. Do not change the exhaust. If you want to go for a free flow exhaust then wait for a while so that people like joel can come up with some option.

but with all these your milage will drop badly, and since u use it for daily commuting it'll increase your fuel bills....... and these may also void your manufacturers warrenty

very very risky job. Until & unless the mechanic is truly experienced & technically sound, please refrain. You will risk loosing more than what you can gain.

I m thinking of compensating the mileage loss by going for an exhaust which weights half of the current one. M sure about the capacity of the welder and will help with the new one for a better price and good look. But m cautious of the same.

Regarding the tweaking of the engine I will definitely will take all the knowledge from the mechanic and will keep you posted for your experienced advise. (By the way m not looking for some magic and will be happy at a top speed of an R15@130)

See, even if you go for the 120 section tire, it wont mean that you will have better grip as most 120 sections you get at tire shops are made from hard compound rubber. Wider tire doesnt mean better grip for example the Yamaha R15 ( version 1 ) has the 100 section rear tire which is a soft compound rubber and it sticks to the tarmac like a leech. I would suggest you to go for a 100 section or a 110 section max. My options would be going in for the pirelli sport demon or the michelin sirac. Other options is the Dunlop Geocruiser. Post your query in the tyre thread( universal threads ) and experts/users will suggest you some other options as well .

Regarding the exhaust,i wouuld suggest you not to go with it unless you are 200 % sure that the mechanic knows what he is doing. If the exhaust is not done up properly then it will harm the engine more rather than doing good to it.

Lastly, Please do let us know before you get any engine job done. Its always better to know things before experimenting with them .

Do these things first and then may be you can think of sqeezing some more top speed from your bike ( eg: sprocketing and other mod jobs ).

This modified exhaust is going to kill your mileage, as low as 20 kmpl and fry your engine's exhaust valve. Avoid it.

And lastly, the mechanic who said this (Rs. 10,000 for 150 kmph) is a fraud. Avoid him.

Try getting a direct fit K&N filter for your bike. Then, try increasing the Carburettor's Main jet size... This should cost around Rs. 2500 and provide you good torque. But still, for any top speed gain you should go for regearing. But that's a very later stage process, not now...

I think No.
Even after extensive modifying it is very difficult to reach 150 kmph. Even R15 doesn't touch that speed. Your SZR is a city commuter bike, let it remain like that... Although it might be possible but that's at a very later stage, not instantly, ok?

Tyre compound also matters.
You can use the Zapper-S 100x80 /17 from the YZF R15. It has amazingly good grip in the same size... Remember, wider tyres may not fit your swingarm. A 120 might fit but that's it.

Have a talk with Joel ([email protected]) about this. He has an exhaust for FZ16 which has the same basic construction as your bike.

If he recommends, you can get an excellent exhaust which will increase your mileage and torque both, for around 7-8 thousand.

You do not need a bigger tyre for grip!!!
You need sticky tires!!!

Do not get an exhaust made from anyone in nanapeth or anyone in pune for that case, if you want to get your engine tuned like get some porting and polishing done then i would suggest you go to bobs garage on nibm, he is a professional tuner with good experience and would be able to make you bike better without having to bore out the engine

i live in pune and i can get you in touch with bob or if u want even grease monkey garage for gettin your engine tuned to be more responsive.

Thanks, to all of u!! I changed the rear tyre with a MRF Nylogrip zapper 110/80/17 (Rs.1, 995/-) including fitting and other charges today. The first ride experience was great and looking forward to more great rides!!

I have found a good mechanic who will be open the engine and will look whether servicing will increase the rpm? Then he will suggest for chain & sprocket setting to generate the required speed. The kit will cost not more then Rs.1,500/-.

He is not going to tweak the engine or going to bore it. It will be done later not now; as I am being converting from a novice rider to mature & experienced one.
Absolutely no to the exhaust as he shared that 4 strokes does not need any exhaust to create pressure, 2 strokes does. Good to know.

Will keep u posted on the update and do share your thoughts and valuable suggestions!!
