Default Ninja 250R - Running rough + Heats up quick

Hi,

i have just got a used Ninja 250R with under 2500 km on it. Been riding around for a week now (have done 600 km just riding in and around Mumbai). Have queries as below:

1. The bike seems to have gone rough and not as smooth when i first rode it.. I am going to take to the service centre and get the engine oil changed for sure .. do you recommend any other check that i can do at home ?

2. The owners manual recommends engine oil viscosity to be 20w50..Since Mumbai is quite hot already, does it make sense to go for a heavier oil ?

3. the bike heats up a lot in slow moving taffic.. goes well above the half line mark but stays slightly below the red area on the meter.

Thanks guys,
Destroyer

1. Most likely that the service center has filled in the bajaj dtsi oil in your bike. This oil does not withstand the heat or the stress that high performance bikes put out. Change to Motul mineral or semi synth in the recommended grade (20w50) and you should be fine. I (and many others) have used motul in our ninja's and are very happy with it. No check needed at home.

2. stick to the recommended grade.

3. perfectly normal. switch off when waiting at a signal to save fuel. keep the key in OFF position so that the radiator cooling fans dont kick in. If the engine is off but ignition is on, fans will run and this can drain your battery... and the ninja has no kick start.

Go through the ninja ownership review thread. There is a lot of info there.

A feeling of 'roughness' can also happen due to Air Filter being dirty.

Just get a complete oil chamber check done. Verify if the oil has not leaked onto some other chamber/ portion.

2009-10 Ninja 250's were recalled abroad due to oil leakage to some other chamber of the machine... Don't recall the exact details, but Indian Ninjas were not recalled.

And a friend of mine recently got his Ninja fixed, which had an oil leakage issue... So, check that. Good luck.

And 20W50 is already such a good grade for heating engines. Just get good brands like Motul, etc. If your machine has crossed 2000 kms, use synthetic oil, otherwise use a good manufacturer's mineral oil.
