Currently owing Bajaj Pulsar 200, having an issue of bike's engine oil burning to minimum of 400ml
after it has been refilled to 1200ml on the service end. Had changed my bikes block-piston on 32000 kilometers . It happened twice with me, once returning from Panjim to Pune. and then again on a recent road trip to Maheshwar. The fresh oil is not a problem but as the oil ages to near 2000 kms, it starts to show it discrepancy and the engine starts running low on oil. From 32000 kms up till now that is 48000 kms, i had been using Bajaj's DTS-i oilthat has been causing me the problem so far. Bike had been shown to various mechanics even my trusted one's at Pro - Biking, they listed me no problem of piston getting damaged again due to loss of oil from the engine. When first i busted my block - piston it was invited by thick black smoke but after the following incident the engine didn't returned the black smoke. Today (12-11-2011) I changed the oil to Castrol Power1 after flushing the old oil out with the help of some diesel to clean out the engine oil casket. Please throw some light on the topic guys!!!!!!

Other than your vanishing-oil problem , you now have diesel-contaminated oil in your engine sump . Bad idea to flush with diesel like that . Castrol power 1(15w40) / Castrol power 1 racing(10w40) is incorrect grade oil for your bike anyway. Drain it quickly (on a hot engine) .
It is not unusual for some oil to disappear after 2000 kms of use . 400ml is however excessive . Check the engine carefully for leaky gaskets externally under strong light . Check the fag-end of the tailpipe for oiliness with finger . How did you know the volume of lost oil ? Fill with good 20w50 oil upto dipstick max mark and keep checking the oil level every 500 kms and top up to max mark if necessary . Change oil every 2000 kms (on a hot engine). Try Valvoline 4T premium 20w50 . Last edited by Pinaki; 11-14-2011 at 12:29 AM. |

@Pinaki, sir I flushed the casket with diesel to clean out the casket only and I cleaned just by juggling the bike and not giving it a crank start. I made the bike stand on main stand in the wee morning hours and without starting the bike I saw the level of oil negligible in the oil window. Sir have checked the bike thoroughly for any leakages but haven't found none. No oiliness on the fag end either. I was using Bajaj DTS-i oil that has reported some discrepancy back in Goa state also, my friend reported to me as he owns a Bajaj authorized service center there in Ponda city.
Haven't ever used Valvoline, will it be good option for my bike and also don't know about the performance of the oil you suggested.

Same problem as i think that happened with my friend too....
The oil that you used is simply superb trust me on this but its not favorable for the 200...You need anything that ends with W50, In short 20w50, 15w50, 10w50, 5w50(if you are in US), 0w50(Near North Pole). The 200cc engine heats up more than the grade you are using at the moment, so i kindly suggest you to go for ratings that are ending with W50....thats what is recommended for your bike. Evaporation and piston blockage is surely going to happen because of wrong grade. When the engine heats up the oil that you used will evaporate because it is not THICK as required... So just change and observe how the performance is by that grade... I also assume there must be a tremendous dip in pick up, top speed and gear shifts..

Your engine oil capacity for top up is 1. liter and you had only 400 ml left after riding it for some time ....I think you have an issue here...either oil or the bore and piston..elsewhere owners of P180 have used 15w40 ..
here is a link of D I Y. DIY: Changing Pulsar 180 UG4's engine oil!

Also Pulsar 180 recommended oil is 20w50 and not 15w40!!!! and that would be in core mineral type and not synthetic or Semi Synthetic.

Mate once i got my bike serviced in Goa state, they f****d up with my engine and destroyed my block piston. Understood your point, will be using only W50 grade oil from now on. A little bit of dip in pickup, top speed is fine and yeah issues with gear shift. I thought that I can play a little bit with the grade but after these suggestions I'll do the same as told by you and Pinaki. thanks a lot again. will definitely update you guyies after I change the oil to 20W50.

Long time back I used the Motul 300v factory line fully synthetic oil, but it didn't perform that in the low cc bike that is my Pulsar 200. The oil was coming out of the Piston head seal. Got it rectified though.
