Hello everybody,
I bought my Yamaha Fazer in April 2010. I recently noticed something weird about my bike when my friend, who has the same bike(same color too :P) came to my house. I rode his Fazer and he rode mine. I found a considerable difference in pick-up while riding his bike. Mine never had such good pick-up from the time I bought it. I was irritated. He bought his bike like 4-5 months after me. How can his bike have a better pick up?? Mileage also he gets more than me, he gets like 45 while i get 35-38. My bike has some history though...I tried fitting a K&N filter and an After market spark plug 2months after i bought my bike. Since the mechanic couldn't do the up-jetting properly(after trying many times), i told him to remove the K&N filter and put back the stock filter..Removed the spark plug and put stock too... Other than that, I've maintained my bike very well..Timely servicing and other stuff...I badly want pick up as my friend's fazer...What should i do?? Should i ask in a Service centre? Or should i go find some local mechanic(who will cheat me)?? I live in Chennnai. I appreciate some advise from somebody !!

Two minor things for pick up:
Clutch settings adjustment Chain adjustent Engine oils help too but not great deal! Check wether he has Ngk Iridium spark plugs or not! About Mileage: It totally depeds on your riding style.!

Go to any mechanic:
and say that you are loosing pickup: Ask him to ajust the clutches. according to ur style:: "Full Clutch"/ "Half clutch" it shouldnt be too tight or too loose. Ask him to adjust the chain: "TIGHTEN the chain" and oil it sometimes loose chains result in less pick up! Some other minor things that we overlook mostly are: U may also ask him to check the spark plugs! Cleaning the air filter Cleaing the Carbeurator

I agree with the suggestions here... regarding tightening of chain, ensure that it is not TOO tight, there should be little slackness, else the chain will be rubbing a lot against the sprocket when you are riding with a pillion rider, as the extra weight applies more pressure on chain during drive...
You can also try Premium petrol like SPEED etc, you should notice extra smoothness and pickup there too.. I ride Pulsar with half clutch settings, and dude from every red signal turning green I just blast off... Again dont worry about your bike, just that it should be configured upon your requirement... Wear Helmet and riding gears... Ride Safe.. |

1. Put yamalube SemiSynthetic 15W50 oil, also replace oil filter. 2. Get a new stock air filter too if you havent changed in last service, costs only about Rs.270(usually one filter lasts 5 to 10k km depending on dusty area, but new filter gives immediate pick up and better fuel burning which means not just pick up but also good mileage). 3. Ask them to tune the carb and adjust the clutch play for better pick up. 4. Get the chain cleaned, lubed and chain free play checked, also check brakes and if worn out replace brake pads, since braking is crucial if you intend to go fast right? 5. Its imp to have a good spark plug, an iridium is not recommended by NGK for your bike, you need to go for NGK G-power CPR8EAGP-9. 6. Also I recommend to fill good quality fuel, speed/power is not recommended since in any bike with a air to fuel ratio less than 10:1 like in ur FZ, the higher octane doesnt help much, you will simply waste money. 7. Put proper recommended psi of air in tyres, lesser air means no pickup! Do all these and ur bike will outrace ur friends. Last edited by prajnyan; 12-27-2011 at 10:19 PM. |

The filters dont actually help. They just let in too much amount of air and create that whoosh sound which makes you think its going fast, but in actual this is only a small percentage of boost but that more air actually cause lean burn, which means overheating, blown gaskets or piston rings, damage to spark plug and voids warranty for your engine. No offence but all those using k&n on small engines are idiots who learn it when they get mileage drop and pickup drop and later learn its because of free flow air filters!! |
