Hello xbhpians , i am making a custom build brake light with smd led's . In local market here i found no smd led so from a mechanic i got a pulsar digital speedo meter to get that led's removed from it & use in my brakelight , bt got confused with the red bigger smd led's there they have 4 terminals , left side bottom terminal is found to be positive while others are negative , for testing i used 3 volt supply & connected to those leds with positive wire at bottom left terminal & negative to any of three terminal , it glows but not fully as it glows on bike tried all three negative terminals together too but no brightness is found , I don't want to get them defused by giving more power than capacity . if anyone knows how much power should i supply to get full brightness or any extra thing need to do ?

Most of the leds will get damaged while desoldering if it is not removed within 4 secs.
Are you sure you want to illuminate the rear stop light using this tiny-miny SMD leds ?? ![]() ![]() If you really want to illuminate using this size of leds ,then you will require at-least 30 smds and How will you install them ? On specifically etched PCB ? That's going to take a lot of time and money to source smds and to make pcb. You can consider 1 watt cree led emitter ,that should give you a lot of illumination or use cheap leds and mount them on a general purpose PCB. BTW, for which bike are you going to do this ? |

According to me, you are not getting full illumination due to 3 volt supply. I guess you should try 4.5, 6, 12 volts...I guess 12 volts will give maximum brightness provided that the LED doesn't blow off ![]() ![]() And yes, where will you tuck those bulbs in the brake light panel? |

Yes i want to use it for brake light , there are already available but too costly , for e.g. check this 1157 RED 9-SMD/LED STOP BRAKE LIGHT WEDGE 2057/7528 | eBay Using a 1157 connector , on a pcb etched by me . Quote:

1157 connector bulb is used on most of bike for brake light , i am gonna use it on passion. Quote:
1157 is a general connector for brake light so with help of it making the plug & play smd led brake light . Last edited by Above_All; 01-03-2012 at 10:44 PM. |

Above_All,
I think the SMD LED's have 2 +ve & 2 -ve leads, then maybe you'll get good illumination.

Mechanic is friend & happy to help me anytime as i help him if he got stuck with wiring , electricals of any bike .Actually i bring that speedo to check how connections are for each unit on display as have a plan to convert analog speedo to digital one for him , but that's really nice pcb & nice work done , not letting to configure it , so meanwhile doing this smd brakelight build up for change . Will check for it once again , but on my checking for last times one leg is positive while found other 3 as negative . |

You can try dome type led such as in
DIY Led Indicator Bulbs Alternatively , you can buy led strips and then de-solder/remove the smd leds. AS far as voltage of leds of pulsar speed is concerned check this out Apply a voltage of 12v here and then check the voltage at the terminals of led using a DMM. ![]() Image Courtesy Rahul devnath Changing Backlight Colour of LCD Speedo Console: Pulsar |
