Hey guys..this is my first post here @xbhp.
I bought an rtr 160 on december 14th 2011.I was informed that i should maintain the bike below 60 kph for 100ks.Well I did follow it for the first 370 kms.But then I started to accelerate harder and started lookin for topspeeds after listening to friends who told that nothing would happen to the bike and also that the bikes engine had 'set in'.But then after reaching 700 kms I realised what happens inside a new bikes engine,I started riding it slow again(maintaining below 4k rpm)..But then again after 1030 kms on the odo i accelerated hard(due to an emergency kind of a situation. Now the bike is at 1077 kms.The questions are 1.)Have I screwed my bike? and2.)How to know exactly if a bikes engine has properly 'broken i'n ![]() Thanx in advance |

Break-in method depends from vehicle to vehicle. You'll have to rip it hard a few times durin break-in(neither for too long nor too many times til you reach 1000 kms) to get max power out of it. Do the ripping once a while, say around after 500 kms. I own a R15 and I did the same (but never tried the top speed during break-in) and I am quite happy that I did it coz I feel that my engine is more peppy than my fren's R15 who followed the break-in mentioned in manual.
Ans to your ques: 1) You may have hurt it a little bit but not completely screwed as you ve not only ripped but also tried for top speed. 2) If you are getting the performance mentioned by tvs(0-60 and 0-100 timings) and getting a mileage close to what the tvs guys say without harshness creeping out of the engine, then you may consider that you have set the engine properly. This is just a thumb rule. Hope this helps. Any1 who feels what I have told is wrong may correct me.

there are two ways to break-in a bike's engine-
now a person who believes first approach will say that in most probability you have ruined your bike's engine. a person who follows second approach will say that your engine may have suffered damage but it is only a small damage. i being a follower of first approach will say that yes there is a definite damage. the amount of damage can be determined only by physical examination. but even a follower of second approach will not say that everything is ok. best you can do now is -
Edit: online evidence of successfully using the second approach is only for bikes from big names and higher capacities. please remember that indian bikes are not manufactured with same level of accuracy and precision as that of bikes by international manufacturers and tolerances in manufacturing of indian bike's engine parts are generally much higher. so better to stick to safe method.

yeah..So weird. There was a mechanic near the spot where the dry bolt came off.He said that the guys at TVS must have not fixedthe bolt properly after the first service. But thats fixed. But Why does the bike shake when gone at high speeds? This has started to happen only after the dry bolt incident
