Question Apache RTR 160 breaking in

Hey guys..this is my first post here @xbhp.
I bought an rtr 160 on december 14th 2011.I was informed that i should maintain the bike below 60 kph for 100ks.Well I did follow it for the first 370 kms.But then I started to accelerate harder and started lookin for topspeeds after listening to friends who told that nothing would happen to the bike and also that the bikes engine had 'set in'.But then after reaching 700 kms I realised what happens inside a new bikes engine,I started riding it slow again(maintaining below 4k rpm)..But then again after 1030 kms on the odo i accelerated hard(due to an emergency kind of a situation. Now the bike is at 1077 kms.The questions are

1.)Have I screwed my bike? and
2.)How to know exactly if a bikes engine has properly 'broken i'n

Thanx in advance

Break-in method depends from vehicle to vehicle. You'll have to rip it hard a few times durin break-in(neither for too long nor too many times til you reach 1000 kms) to get max power out of it. Do the ripping once a while, say around after 500 kms. I own a R15 and I did the same (but never tried the top speed during break-in) and I am quite happy that I did it coz I feel that my engine is more peppy than my fren's R15 who followed the break-in mentioned in manual.
Ans to your ques:
1) You may have hurt it a little bit but not completely screwed as you ve not only ripped but also tried for top speed.
2) If you are getting the performance mentioned by tvs(0-60 and 0-100 timings) and getting a mileage close to what the tvs guys say without harshness creeping out of the engine, then you may consider that you have set the engine properly. This is just a thumb rule.
Hope this helps. Any1 who feels what I have told is wrong may correct me.

Hey Sunil..0-60 was done in 3.8 secs.the tvs guys said apache 160 does it in 4.8 secs(1 sec quicke than the claimed timing)It was by my frnd though. My best yet has been 4.4 secs.Still quicker than the claimed timing)Well, once i checked the mileage(reserve to reserve)I got about 47 kmpl. What do u say?

there are two ways to break-in a bike's engine-
  • first method is you ride is slowly, no harsh accelaration and keep speed below 60kmph for first 1500 kms or so, for exact details, read your owner's manual. this method is most widely accepted by people and also most widely followed by two wheeler manufacturing companies. this method protects a bike's engine.
  • second method which is followed by some people never recommended by any bike manufacturer is - during breaking-in period follow the above method except that in between their are short busts of high speed riding. typically you take the bike for a ride ride it for say 10-15 mins below 60 kmph so that engine is heated to good working temperature and oil reaches every part, then you give it a short burst of high speed riding say 5 mins or so, then let it cool down by gradually decresing the speed to below 60 kmph or complete standstill, then again the same process is repeated a few times. but main points are bike is first allowed to obtain its working remperature by riding it at recomended speeds for 10-15 mins and then accelerated and acceleration is not very harsh and high speed is also not maintained for longer time. the high speeds mentioned here is also not a top speed run at full throttle.

now a person who believes first approach will say that in most probability you have ruined your bike's engine. a person who follows second approach will say that your engine may have suffered damage but it is only a small damage.

i being a follower of first approach will say that yes there is a definite damage. the amount of damage can be determined only by physical examination. but even a follower of second approach will not say that everything is ok.

best you can do now is -
  • stop ripping your bike, read the manual and follow it strictly
  • never disclose your heroics to service center or you will have difficulty claiming warranty later on.
  • change engine oil immediately.
  • read the link given by sunilg thouroughly.

Edit: online evidence of successfully using the second approach is only for bikes from big names and higher capacities. please remember that indian bikes are not manufactured with same level of accuracy and precision as that of bikes by international manufacturers and tolerances in manufacturing of indian bike's engine parts are generally much higher. so better to stick to safe method.

Looking at the stats, I dont think you would have ruined your ride. Now that you have crossed 1000 kms, there is no point in turning back also. Your run-in period is over and your engine has set. So, you can ride it the way you want. Coz your bike is new, you'll worry more about the engine and bike. But as time progresses, you'll understand that anything that happens to bike is reversible. If the piston rings are fried or any part is damaged, you can always replace them and your bike will be as good as new. I also used to worry about my engine too much wen I bought it. But after 1200 kms, I learnt this lesson and started to ride it the way i want(But cautiously like not over revving in all gears except 6th). NOw, my bike has clocked 12000+ kms and reached a top speed of 146, I still rev it whenever I want without worrying too much about engine. Just change the oil and oil filter periodically, ride with proper tyre pressure and clean and lubricate your chain periodically and you shouldn't have to worry about anything else. And ofcourse, get it serviced regularly.

ok ok...am having a problem now..yesterday i was returning back to coimbatore after a trip to siruvani.Suddenly the bolt under the engine came off and all the engine oil started to leak..my bike also started skidding as it came in contact with all the spilled oil.Somehow I managed to control it.When i stopped the bike, the remaining engine oil also came off.It was empty now.I toed the bike to a tvs dealer 3 kms from the spot and had a dry bolt fixed under the engine.New engine oil was also filled.Came back at a slow speed to my home.Today I was going at 85 kmph. The bike started shaking.I thought it was due to some skiddy stuff on the road. But again it started to shake at that speed.I still think that the oil is at the tyres.Or are the wheels loose?.Never seen this happen before.whats happening?whats wrong?

yeah..So weird. There was a mechanic near the spot where the dry bolt came off.He said that the guys at TVS must have not fixedthe bolt properly after the first service. But thats fixed. But Why does the bike shake when gone at high speeds? This has started to happen only after the dry bolt incident
