Unhappy help me-lots of false neutrals

Hi xbhpians,
I have a 2000 model yamaha rx 5speed which is just back from a complete cosmetic and engine rebuild. its completed 185 kms now after the build.

Though everything else is fine with the bike I am facing a problem of false neutrals , there are a quite a number of them encountered when i am riding the bike. like around 30% of all gear shifts are not engaged properly.
the clutch lever has been adjusted to very less play.
i.e the clutch engages when the lever is released fully.the false neutrals occur between any particular gear, it feels like there is a neutral between each gear

for example, if i am shifting from 3rd to 4th and a false neutral occrs at that point, the gear just refuses to engage to 4th if i upshift again. I have to get it back to third and shift to fourth.this holds good for all gears even when downshifting.

all i know is that this is quite dangerous and i have had close calls with vehicles narrowly missing hitting me from behind during heavy traffic.I am using castrol power one as the gearbox oil.
any gyan regarding why this is caused will be highly appreciated.

Thanks and regards
Mithun

@mithun: you say engine rebuild. what all?
and though clutch is at half play, did full clutch help?
and... whats the situation with high rev gear change? i mean, in every gear at say 9k rpms you feel if you dont change gears its gonna blow or shift automatically... at this point, what happens with half/full clutch shift?
am a 4stroker so dunno much of 2s oils...

Wink Lets change the perspective from technical to..

In yamaha engine I can tell by my riding experience that habit of shifting to neutral gear is something which comes and builds up naturally. I am talking about habit.

For example, many friends of mine just could not put neutral gear from 2nd gear, they shift to 1st gear and then lightly pull up (although many would still pull to 2nd gear and try again). Whereas, I could put neutral gear from 2nd gear.
Bringing back to the topic, you can feel when your engine will be shifted to neutral. Just a feather touch. I hope now you will be able to feel the gear shifting without neutral too. I hope this works if there is no issues in the Engine Rebuild. If there will be technical issue then you will have to get it checked thoroughly.
Oh, btw, in Bullet when gear is shifted, user can very well feel Gear removal and then shifting to another gear in a single upward or downward press of the gear pedal.
One more suggestion is read about clutch-less shifting too, in case you need emergency shift.
Am just hoping this works..

After the rebuild which handlebar you are using if it is stock then you have to play around with the settings.

If the handle is an after market one you should change the clutch cable, the stock cable is best for stock handle bars not for after market one's. i came to know about this problem after i changed to machismo 500 handle bar on my bike i faced probs while shifting from 3rd to 4th.

Psycho 98: yes the handle is an after market one which the previous owner had installed, but the bike was fine before i gave it for the rebuild, even though there was oil leakage from the gearbox due to cracked clutch cover the gears dint show problem. how does handle affect gear shifts

Shadez: no there is no slippage at any rpm except that it comes into false neutrals while shifting sometimes, once shifted,it stays there when the bike is moving. No jumping etc.
The bike is in its runin so I have not revved the engine much so don’t know much what would happen at higher rpms.

Jaykumar:There is a problem of gear falling into neutral when the engine is revved, especially at signals, so it needs a firm tap on the lever for it to stay there ,and like u said I need to get it into first and then neutral.being used to a 4 stroke gearbox. This takes getting used to..
I am using powerone as gearbox oil

she seems to be better now.. not so many false neutrals. the mechanic told me since the seals, bearings etc are new it will be there for sometime, the problem will go after they set in. not much false neutrals encountered while coming back from the mech.

He asked me to put in more oil in the gearbox. I had put 600ml initially as I couldn’t put more. The reason being that the level was high already. I may have been stupid enough not to think there may have been air pockets formed.
I found the oil was indeed low so put 50 ml more. The problem seems to have gone after that but couldn’t ride her much as she came to reserve and theres petrol shortage in the city.

Will let u guys know if the problem crops up again, Thank u all for the help given
