I have a Glady SS (Black) 10 months old and am more than happy with it. Off late I have had skidding problem at least 4 times. Around 3 months back i had an accident in a rainy night when i applied brakes suddenly at a signal crossing. As the bike was at around 40kmph and road slippery, it was a possibility. But after that 3 times the same thing has repeated without any bad fall. Because of this I am feeling quite unsure while applying brakes.
When I went to Y Service center for regular servicing and complained about the same, he asked if bike fell because of that. On my affermative reply the guy told the chassis is bent and the forks are bent too and to repair all of them it will cost Rs 3200( Chassis only) and Rs 1500( for forks) plus some other charges and expected cost would be Rs 6000. I was baffled as i have never had any other problem and bike feels very secure otherwise. Can some one help? Does chassis gets bent easily? Does chassis bending results in skidding on braking? How to check if Fork is bent(What is fork?) Does it result in skidding? How much should these cost? Please Please Please help!! |

Where are you from? Knowing this enables a better suggestion from someone near to your place.
A chassis or even a fork doesn't bend so easily but since you've had a fall, it cannot be denied. Sometimes the silliest of the falls cause serious damage. Please take a second and even third opinion from someone else like may be another Yamaha SS or an experienced mechanic somewhere. Also, you can get the chassis & forks straightened to a good extent in most cases. Please approach those who do the works (may be your local mechanic can help you with this) instead of getting the job done through the SS. As such they don't take any responsibility for such works but they charge you a very good margin over the actual expenses. That apart, whether there's something wrong with the bike or not, please run on recommended tyre pressure (from the manual) and do not over-inflate the tyres. Also, when braking, don't slam the real brake - remember the front gives about 70% of braking power and rear should be used only as an addition to that. If you slam the rear brakes the bike has maximum chances of a skid.

^^+1 to that... Jus check and keep the tyres at the right pressure... I too complained about skidding on the gladi... But after keeping the tyre pressure at the recommended level the bike does do a lot better... Even proper breaking is important as stated by hydbiker... I have learnt to use my front brakes properly while being very light on the rear and this has done a world of good... Not only with the skidding but also with effective breaking...
And about the fork it can happen... A small fall on the rx 135 n i had a bent fork. Do check with a local mechanic because i had my forks fixed for much cheaper. Keep us posted on wat happens.... Regards, Prashanth |

I thought it was Rs 1500. Would you please give the details on where to get one and the technical stuff about the anti lock braking system for bikes...

Hi Guys I am from Bangalore and had gone to Pacer motors for the check up. I will show it two couple of other service stations before undertaking actual repairs. i do maintain tyre pressure quite regularly and will be extra careful from now on. I think all the three times i had used front brake and back break simultaneously. Probably the skid was due to hard braking of rear brake indeed!! This is the first time someone told me rear brake should get lesser effort!
Will keep you guys posted after I have it shown to some other mechanics.. Thanks a lot all of you.. And guys any good mechanic for glady around south bangalore(BTM)????? Last edited by omzworld; 04-28-2009 at 04:46 PM. |
