Default Newbie on new Karizma. Please help

Hello! I just go my Karizma yesterday. My first bike ever for that matter. As someone new to bikes in general, I would like to ask couple of questions, so if you guys can help me out, that'll be great.

Below is a picture of my new ZMA and also a picture that is causing me worry.

1. As you can see in the second picture, there are some pipes (3 to be exact) that are hanging. Is this normal? I noticed only after I reached home and I didn't have time to go back to ask. It will be helpful if someone can tell me if they are okay or should I take it back to service center.

2. As someone new to riding a bike, I am yet to get accustome to the gear. I have been driving cars all my life. Car gears are in "H" pattern, so finding "neutral" is not an issue. However in bikes, it goes straight up & down. So I am finding it tricky to find neutral. Most times, i'll overshoot the neutral by either pressing down too hard (2 to 1) or pulling them to hard (1 to 2). I would like to know if there are some TIPS where I can easily engage "neutral". Or is this something I will learn eventually. And sometimes, The gear would refuse to engage neutral from First. I have to move the bike a little forward by releasing the clutch and try again. Is this normal.

Xbhp has helped me greatly in deciding for Karizma. Now I'll be looking forward on how to ride and maintain this bike properly. Thanks in advance.

Today is my first long distance ride to office (30 kms approx). It is also the longest ride at a stretch on a bike for me .

Congratulations on your new purchase!

Here are some answers:

The pipes you see hanging are breather pipes for the engine and overflow/drain pipes for the battery and carburetor.

As for finding neutral, until you get used to riding a bike and adjust to the gears, the best way to place it in neutral is:

Simply go all the way to first gear to begin with. Then, gently lift the gear pedal a notch and you'll be in neutral. A little practice and you should do fine.

Caution: Do not try to put the bike into fist gear when it is moving at anything higher than 20kmph - you may damage the gearbox and/or fall off the bike due to the sudden compression.

Thanks a lot for your comments. Been quiet worried about those pipes. A relief too as I don't have to run to service center. Y'see, Office and service center are in opposite direction .

Now for some more questions about the "Fuel Valve" that has "On", "Off" and "RES" position.
1. What will happen if I keep it in on position all the time even when not in use. Oh yes, there will be sufficient fuel always and I know that "RES" position is used when I need to use the 'Reserved Fuel'. I find it inconvenient to always put in "Off" when not in use and "On" when using the bike. So wondering if its okay to simply leave it in "On" position.

2. Secondly, after picking the bike yesterday from showroom. There was just enough fuel to reach the petrol pump. The Hero Honda guy set the valve in "RES" position. I tanked it up then proceed on. Only after reaching home I realized that I was running in reserved mode. I drove about 9 kms like that. In this regard here is exactly what the manual says, and I quote:

"Do not use the motorcycle with the fuel valve in the "RES" position, after refilling. You may run out of fuel, with no reserve."

Oh..oh! now what? I just did that . Okay now I'm running in "On" position. Will something go wrong?

Forgot to add this. My first service is around 500-750 kms. Do I need to check engine oil, brake oil, etc. till then? Or is it okay to just fill petrol and ride till then.

The karizma or for that matter any other bikes, can hold a certain amount of fuel in reserve. When, the bike is normally used with the fuel valve in ON position, this reserve fuel can not be used. So as soon as your fuel level decreases to reserve level (approx 2L fuel left in the tank), the bike will stop. To use this remaining reserve fuel, the fuel valve is moved to RES position. Now, the bike can be used untill all the fuel runs out. The main purpose of the RES position is to warn the rider that the bike is running on reserve fuel and hence needs refuelling.

Now, if you refuel your bike and still run with the fuel valve in RES position. the bike will not stop when fuel level reaches reserve level as the fuel valve is already in RES position. So the bike will stop when it runs out of fuel completely. Hence, you will not get any prior warning. So it is recomended to keep the fuel valve in ON positions when your bike has enought fuel to cross reserve level.

And no nothing to check till first service. Just follow the run-in procedures properly.
