  • [xBhp Universal Thread]: What footwear do you wear for everyday riding?

Lets face it, 99.9% of us would slip on a pair of regular shoes and sandals for everyday riding. Our riding specific boots, if any, would come out of cold storage only when we're either touring, or for that rare spin on the track.

So this thread is about the shoes/sandals you wear for daily use on the bike - some ground rules:

    1) Mention brand/make, model name and price you got it for.
    2) The reason behind why you wear the shoe you do.
    3) How long has it lasted you so far
    4) Any other comments/feedback.
    5) Please exclude riding specific boots - there is a riding gear thread for that.

I hope this will help people who are looking to buy an all-in-one shoe which can be used for biking, office/college use and other everyday activities.

I'll start - 90% of the time, I use a leather Nike (Jordan) boot for riding my bike to the office/movies etc. I bought it for Rs.2000 at a discount and I use it because it is durable enough to withstand gear shifts, goes well with my blue jeans and is dust resistant. I have been using them for the past 3 years and it has held its own quite well, except for fraying laces!

Going to gym i wear forca shoes as they were cheap and have lot of traction i use em less so still working over a year.
while going for tennis i prefer my Babolat Propulse 2 tennis shoes, well they are new.

well its easy as i have to not carry too many shoes, now i am planing to go for riding shoes planing to order from abroad or Orazo, as its raining cats and dogs in Bangalore and roads are bad, so riding shoes are must...

Shoes: Nike Air Jordans (All black leather)

Why: Moulded soles... very good ankle support.

How Long: Lasted me about 2 n a half years of virtually using it everyday. with a toeshifter. no frayed leather.

Comments: Air Jordans are without a doubt the most comfortable Nike shoes i've ever worn so far. They're definitely worth the price too.

                    Price: Rs. 8999

                    -----------

                    Current

Shoes: Reebok Baseketball Shoes (All white with red highlights n sole)

Why: Moulded soles... decent ankle support. very good grip.

How Long: Been using them for about 3 months now.

Comments: Just bought these as an intermediate pair till i can find a good pair of Jordans in Bombay. Can't fnd one anywhere.
The Reeboks are not as comfy as my Jordans.

                    Price: Rs. 2499

                        SHOES : LEE COOPER Casuals

                        Cost : 2200

Used for biking, office use, got decent grip using it from last 2 years and has faced two full fledged rains of pune still the shoe looks intact, and fits me perfectly and i can carry it on formals and casuals easily.

i used some Reebok RBK. Nice sport shoes, Costed me Rs. 4000
But the front starts coming out, as its mesh. The shoe did last around 2 yrs or more than that.
Also I use Red-Tape, which are very nice. I use only on formals.
Currently I got ID shoes. They have good collection, termed as "Wild Bikes, Beware.!" Very nice specially to use it on bikes. It has a protection on the front side. Very useful to protect wearing out from Gear shifts.
Got it for 2500. Very comfy, light, strong & stylish..!!
something similar to this, the one on the right side. Though mine ones has lace, but notice the above protection in the front.

Oh, another thread like the http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/pit-stop...ift-lever.html thread!

Anyways, I use the following footwear, (apart from my Cramster riding boots which is only for rides):
                            1. Lee Cooper black formal leather Rs.2350
                            2. Lee Cooper brown formal same
1&2 were bought 2 years back&I wear daily to office, 5 days a week.
                            3. Woodland nubuck material sandals mostly everyday in the evening Rs.2200 bought 3 years back
                            4. Woodland camel color nubuck material shoes Rs.2200 bought 2 years back
                            5. Woodland boots suede Rs.2300 IIRC bought 4 years back
                            6. Reebok DMX Rs.5500, white with mesh-discounted Rs.3650 bought 1 year back
                            7. Woodland chappal cum shoe (I donno what its called) green nubuck material, Rs.1800, discounted Rs.1200 bought 2 years back.
                            8. Adidas Jaw Paw Rs.2000, flat mesh grey with orange stripes bought 2 years back.
                            9. Nike basketball Rs.3300, discounted Rs.1900, bought 5 years back.
                            10. Reebok white&blue canvas or convos, whatever its called, Rs.2000, discounted Rs.1200-bought 1 year back .

I know thats quite a list! Mostly 1,2&3 are used daily, rest on weekends.
                            Observations:
(1&2)leather shoes&ones with mesh (6&8)are worst prone to damage by the toe shifter-it can literally tear them.
Suede slightly resistant, but tears over a period. I had to get the suede lining replaced for the Woodland boots (5)
Nubuck holds fine if the shifter rubber is soft (as in case of RTR), but becomes black, in case of lighter colors like camel (3,4&7)
Canvas (10) holds good, but becomes black-color can be restored by using shoe shampoo.
Sandals/boots are not very comfy for toe shifters, as they are either loose as in the case of sandals, or too big to get the foot under the shifter, resulting in ankle pain in the case of boots.

All in all, Nike basketball (9)-the oldest&cheapest is the one that can take all sorts of shifter abuse without showing a sign, can be cleaned very easily, water resistant&also gives good ankle support while shifting gears. Very much recommended for biking.
Methods of saving shoes are discussed in the above thread.

                              Long rides:
What: Lee Cooper Boots (Brown),all leather, with ankle support.

                              Price: 2.5K

Pros: Good all weather durability, have withstood bangalore rains, and are pretty good at ankle support. Actually saved my legs in a nasty skid. Heavy duty soles.

Cons: I use a toe-shifter, and the part where the shifter touches, has turned black . Need a lot of time to dry up when drenched, especially in bangalore weather.

Short rides (grocery, this, that): Nike sandals.

                              Pros: very light, good grip.

Cons: I use a toe-shifter, so not very comfy. Might not protect the legs too much in case of an accident.
