    First bike Help.

Hi, I am going to buy my first bike and have no prior two wheeler experience. Have been researching a bit online and talking to friends as well, and short listed the following: CBZ-X, Suzuki GS150R, Yamaha-FZ

My requirements are: being a youngster I want good looks, riding comfort, uniqueness (shouldnt be too common on the roads), mileage 45+, cost upto 75K onroad, Good engine performance, stability/handling.

Other details: Travel approx 30KM a day, rare long rides. 75 KG, 5'-8".
Please guide me, following is what I have learned, please correct me if Im wrong.....

    Suzuki 150GS
    + Superior comfort
    + smooth engine
    + good mileage
    + uncommon on roads
    + stability
    - headlight not focused properly
    - heavy
    - not at all stylish looks, but digital tachometer
    - slow pickup
    - rusting issues
    - weak brakes

    CBZ - X
    + good Pickup
+ good mileage (but less than GS150)
+ average comfort (but less than GS150)
    - average looks, but better looking than GS150
    - very common on roads

    Yamaha FZ

    + looks
    + pickup
    + broad tires
    + stability
+/- uncommon now, but becoming common increasingly
    - low pillion comfort
    - low mileage

Since this is going to be my first bike, I cannot differentiate between them with a test drive. Also heard that Apache 160RTR is a good bike, but Yamaha-FZ and Apache both appear to be pretty uncomfortable

The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

If this is your first bike and you can relax 45+kmpl mileage constraint a bit, FZ is the best bike for you.
Though, all three bikes are really good, but FZ would be the best bet for a beginner .. it's really easy to tame than heavy GS or xTreme(total diff is 6kg in these two).

Yamaha FZ is probably ruled out if you insist on 45+ kmpl. A colleague of mine does not get more than 30-32 In any case, there seems to be mileage concerns w.r.t FZ. Do check the Ownership thread.

There is no exclusivity on this side of 1lakh. If you are ready to compromise on that RTR180 may suit your requirements.

          1. Cbz well not really got gr8 reviews but is a good bike none the less...but wouldnt recommend u that one...

          2. Fz...go for it if u like the looks and the feel...its an amazin city bike...its got wide handle bars and an ergonomical posture ...which are perfect for city riding...zippy and torque at lower end are its best feature....while the mileage is not....that is cause of the rear tyre base being huge....but it also adds to the stability....

3.apache ...its got an amazin posture and gr8 torque again like the fz...but its slightly better in the mileage dept...good bike for the city as well as touring...latest 180 really seems to be fast!!!

4.Unicorn(not from ur list)- try out the bike...its nice city bike ....gr8 mileage and stability ....city as well as long trips can be done...not gr8 on the torque but is a complete package for the average city commuter...

please make ur preference know not only ur requirements...as in wat u want mileage...speed...wat exactly do u expect from ur stead??

To ride or not to ride?? is a....
          very very stupid question....

fz is a good bike but mileage is on the lower side...I'd suggest apache RTRfi since it falls in your budget.Even cbz-x/hunk is a good alternative option
It all begins with a thumb-start -- Oh, wait, I forgot the kill-switch

based on your needs i would like to shortlist three bikes for you..

              1) Cbz Extreme
              2)Apache 180
              3)Unicorn

not in any preferential order though

cbz is a good bike .. headlight part looks average..great comfort .. stability at even 110+ kmph..excellent ride quality.
Suspension can be better. Also better to incorporate digital tacho. Slightly heavier than the other ones' (not sure of apache's weight)

But in all, a bike which u can consider.

              Apache :

              great power..zippy..responsive.

              Unicorn:
perfect for daily commuting.. though old it has no problem apart from waiting period after booking
Unicorn is probably the only bike without any complaints whatsoever. Rarely remember anyone complaining about its performance or maintenance.

Go for FZ, a very good bike for city riding with good features both cosmetic and engine wise...

Otherwise, if FZ doesnt match your taste Apache RTR 180 - awesome bike with loads of torque and is extremely fast...

Take a test ride and then you will be the best person to judge your ride...

                Cheers

PERSEVERE... failure is not an option!

                  <<<

                  <<<

Won't agree with this .. Its a good bike with great comfort. Sitting posture and handle bar positioning is really good which ensure gr8 comfort for the rider.

I own a CBZ 5 months Old. Last week I took her for a ride Bangalore - Chennai - pondichery, she was awsome. Everybody commented on the smooth handling and the sitting comfort. Regarding the stability its awesome very smooth at high speed. Braking is also exceptionally good, make sure you feed in the tyres with proper air pressure.
I could touch 120 Km/hr on Chennai - Pondicherry ECR route, with out any vibrations or hoot. Traveled 860 kms with out any problem, she got a smooth refined engine.

Definitely you can consider this bike.

                    @thread starter

i dont think that GS150R has bad looks it looks much better than CBZ and even a pulsar150,and the brakes have very good response...i took a test ride......in fact it has better brakes than FZ.....i think GS150R is a great buy as it is an all rouder with great features.......i donno abt the rusting though but suzuki has solved the problem it seems...

i would suggest you unicorn over fz or extreme....i owned fz for a year and its mileage though initially is great tends to fall to 35 whatever you do...and unicorn is a nice city bike...try it out

Uncomfortable is not the right word I would say...These bikes have a sporty stance...Now its upto you if you can adjust to it...try borrowing one from friends and spend some time with it. I would insist coz the power delivery you get from these bikes can't really be matched to the so-called-comfortable bikes ...No offence meant to other bikes...

We have ample number of folks on this forum itself who tour on their FZs and RTRs. Me being one of them. Have done a max of 571kays in a day w/o any issues @all...

Moreover the Apache has adjustable clip-ons which you can adjust to your comfort levels. Having said that I would suggest you a FZ if you are purely into city commuting or a A160/180 if you are a occasional tourer...

And among the three bikes you shortlisted I would say Xtreme would be the best VFM with decent power delivery and decent enough comfort(thanks to honda engine again )...

                        Best of luck...

If you want a good combination of looks, power and mileage, go for the A180 or P180.

Bro....I would suggest to go for RTR 180 or even a P180....

Both are good bikes and RTR is a hooligan...very responsive and gives you the thrill of riding bike....the sheer pleasure....
but on the other hand as you are a beginner....the RTR might not be a safe bike to ride....with its adreline rush...you might get too carried away....

You can go for the P180 which falls in your budget and gives a very decent mileage of 45 to 48....
It is good for city as well as a long drive....the 2009 version is really a refined one....and we have pulsar's track record....
the only point that this bike does not satisfy is...whatever it might be...it is not unique...
but it is the best VFM bike in that range....take a test drive and decide....

Thanks a lot guys for the detailed discussion. Right from the start I had been tilting a little more towards GS150R and though its a very uncommon bike, today I saw all three colours of the GS on the road, within a span of 10 mins. and I daresay that the orange one looks very different. In black, the bike looks very similar to the pulsar (except for the tail-light of course), but the blazing orange sets the GS apart as pulsars arent made in that colour. Also for the (new) CBZ i liked the black version with the red CBZ logo and the tail-light in red. Have also seen the new CBZ in the black-black tire combo now, instead of the black-red tyre combo with which it was initially launched.

Apache and FZ are both good zippy bikes, though I am afraid of the riding posture as I have a slight back problem. Though i dont really know if the riding poture would cause an issue, but i shall still play safe.

Can the senior members please throw some light on the city mileage of the new CBZ extreme, and the handling/comfort of the P180.

                              Thanks for the overwhelming response!
