  • [SlideShow]: Meeting the Dragon : The unended adventure

    Hi All,

This must be the proud moment for me to share this T’log with all of u biggies.
A week back, Kaza was nowhere in my mind. Instead we had a plan to go to Chindi.
But destiny wants me to go to one of the remotest places of the world, all alone on my RedBull.

Before starting anything, I would like to thank my God and my machine (Bullet) for co-operating me in a no-man zone.

Now I am the complete man by riding to the heaven of Himachal to extreme ends.

Spiti Valley-Kaza/Morang/Shipki La Pass- All in 3 days.

    Day 1 : Chandigarh-Theog-Rampur-Karchham-Spello-Khab-Nako-Tabo
    Chandigarh-25March,23:30 hrs to Tabo-26March,18:30 hrs
    525 kmts in 19 hrs

    Day 2 : Tabo-Kaza-Morang-Tabo-Hoorling-Khab-ShipkiLa-Reckong Peo
Tabo-27March,07:00 hrs to Reckong Peo-27March,20:00 hrs
    300 kmts in 13 hrs

    Day 3 : Reckong Peo-Kalpa-Karchham-Rampur-Chandigarh
Reckong Peo-28March,12:00 hrs to Chandigarh-28March,00:00 hrs
    360 kmts in 12 hrs

Total kmts in 3 days: 525+300+360=1185 kmts
Total expenditure: Petrol + Rs.1100/-(all inclusive)
    Achievement: ShipkiLa Pass(w/out pics)
Worst scenario: No snow at all on roads upto Morang
Excitement starts at: Going towards China border/Pass via Dogri.
15 kmts of roads(or no-roads) at an altitude above 4200 mts, snow, stones, mud, water, wind blowing like storm, darkness etc etc. etc.

    Day1 : Chandigarh-Theog-Rampur-Karchham-Spello-Khab-Nako-Tabo

Whenever I saw other bikers sharing their experience and photos of the Upper Himalayas I felt that deep urge inside me to see and experience it personally. Putting all my work way behind, taken office leave for Friday, things started to mould into their shape. There were many “if and buts” while preparing for the journey.

There was a bit of confusion and preparation with all the stuff needed, extra tubes, medical kit, puncture repair kit electric pump and tools needed. All the things got arranged but no pump

Journey started from Chandigarh after a warm flag off from two of my friends (KurtRules & PrashantBhardwaj). Kurt had given some good advice about the road conditions, weather, blah blah blah… Both waived hands as I kicked my Bull and then realized that I have to achieve some uncommon thing all alone. Confused and Happy all together.

Till now, I have only Reckong Peo as the final destination for the first day and ShipkiLa Pass for the second day. But on the contrary, I reached Reckong Peo at 12 noon much earlier than my expectation. The road till there was free from snow as expected. No adventure at all.

I was little much dicy about the staying options whether to choose Puh or Peo. I called Kurt from Peo and decided to move further till the road and snow allows me to go. From there, I kept Tabo in mind which was around 200 kmts more from there.

On first day, I wanted to complete as many as places that I could. I reached Tabo after visiting Nako Lake and Geyu’s Mummy just leaving only ShipkiLa for the second day.

After taking some fag breaks, I entered Kinnaur after 7 hrs of uneventful ride. The road was butter smooth as you all know. NO enjoyment at all!!!!!

    Ohh……..What a place!!!!! What a landscape!!!! Ghosh..........

I wanted to dance badly to control my excitement. I couldn’t control myself and started dancing with the sound of blowing winds like storm.

Now the bad era started. Powari-Karchham-Wangtu road: I don’t want to do that rough, dusty, painful stretch again till work for Hydro-electric Project gets finished. Was that road or what!!! Seriously a shit!!!

1st road side waterfall came in picture……….

    To Be Continued...................

    Topic Approved.

Whoa! Another Spiti ride log within a span of two weeks (after OF sir's, B2L's and Anshul's), that too a solo one this time! Super stuff, waiting for more text and pictures to flow in. It seems the snow has fast melted, since you guys did not find any snow till Losar! What about after Losar? Are the roads open?

aah great, Kurt/Vaibhav told me bout it coming so was waiting. Even I was disappointed to know that there was no snow around Kaza. But looks like you had a great ride. Wonderful pics, I could relate them with some fresh memories. Waiting for more...
      cheers!
I'd rather be riding my motorcycle thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my motorcycle.
Ride often, ride well, have fun.

You guys went there at the very apt moment, it seems! Snow up there can melt just as fast as it forms, it seems!

No doubt about that, we visited white PIN valley while it opened just 2 days ago... imagine a week earlier and it wouldnt have been accessible.

            Totally true!

@DL8S: I would like to know about the road conditions post Losar? Was it open? More importantly was Chandratal accessible in any-way?
            :)

As per some army personnels there coming from Losar side, there was no snow . I had not gone past Losar due to time constraints and no snow means I would not go at any cost
                Chandertal-I can't say anything abt it.Sorry

I'm getting so jelousy for the first time in life that I wasn't born somewhere in the north; Man you guys are teasing me with such heavenly scenaries. Just love them & hope RE handled well.
PS - Though I feel jelous, I also hope the otherside is always green

Great stuff Archit. The ride must have been a wonderful experience and Shipki La being its crowning glory. Vaibhav did give me regular updates about your progress through the valley.

Agree about the Bhabanagar-wangtu section. Its a regular slush-fest. And that between Akpa and Spello...gravel all over. Crazy.

Regular and consistent sunshine can really speed up melting. We couldn't go even to Rangrik barely a week before you got there. And you could go till Losar. Going by the way even the plains are hotting up, the Manali route should be open by late April this year. Though it'll be a lot more slushy than the karcham area.

Looking forward to reading more of your experience.
