  • Symbol for Pulsar - Is it the next big step for this brand??

Hi all Pulsar owners out there.. I was just wondering what's the next big step Bajaj can take for making Pulsar instantly recognizable (that's apart from all the technology upgrades & styling changes that Bajaj brings up with each upgrade). As Bajaj has already taken the tentative first step by creating various capacity bikes like 135, 150, 180 & 220 cc bikes under the brand name Pulsar and Rajeev Bajaj giving bold statement to press on how they are deliberating to drop Bajaj symbol from bikes, isn't the symbol for brand is the only missing thing in this jigsaw puzzle. Who can ignore the black horse in yellow back drop on a Ferrai?? or for that matter 3-pointed star on a Benz?? Those symbols play an important role in recognizing the vehicles. Even Tatas realized this and got the symbol designed in late 90's or is it early in this decade itself? I think there is a pressing need for Bajaj to create a symbol for it's brands, which makes them instantly recognizable.

      Isn't this the one?

Or do you mean the Pulsar brand should have a separate logo? Does any bike have one? Haven't heard so! And IMO, not necessary.
Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!

I know what they can do for a change. Change the styling. Its been long enough in the tooth now with that fairing, the tank etc. Im sure a lot still find it appealing, but there are enough on the road to have the same look. Now it needs a radical redesign, like the FZ family, mono-shock etc.

This has been discussed at length, many a times. The design of the Pulsar needs a total overhaul, but I guess it takes a substantial investment and R&D for this. I still hope that Bajaj launches a totally revamped Pulsar, sometime in the future.

I hope they don't do anything but atleast put an end to the elcheapo cost cutting and random styling. The p135LS rear is ugly. The disco 135 was 100x better anyday!

They have already got inspired by an equally iconic brand, turned and tweaked their logo to get theirs

(hope you understand what that smiley means!)

Now, which one do they need inspiration from for the Pulsar logo?

I'd say, just get the new platform of Pulsars into the market in the next 1 to 2 years. The existing Pulsar font is already a good identity. Get going. The Pulsars would continue to rock with the new platform (definitely with inputs from KTM).

                    Hi

I presume you are from bajaj... (dont need explanations).. your profile hardly tells anything about you. Ok you want opinion from Pulsar owners.

Lets take a look at what all companies are doing or for that matter..did in the past. 3 pointed star.. the ferrari logo.. Tata got their Logo redone.. (that was after TELCO was dissolved.. if I can recall correctly)..

All the companies take pride in their name.. And maintain a distinct logo for that. The mercedes.. BMW.. Honda.. Toyota.. all have logos for their brand.. which is essentially a Trademark. Now Companies have different products under thier belt.. and products keep getting introduced or pulled back.. There is no Solid Trademark as such for Products.. But the main trademark of company never gets removed or abandoned. (Yes the logo keeps evolving with time)

This is the symbol of pride that.. companies put their trademark Logo on their products... Nobody ever tries to make a seperate trademark for their products.. As the companies never intend to make the Product bigger than the Brand itself.

To put it in simpler words.. Lets take an example.. BMW makes X5.. Now X5 is the name registered by BMW.. globally (specifically in the markets they serve).. Now people who own X5..trust X5.. or respect X5.. because its a product from BMW.. so it means that since the product is from BMW.. the respect is more.. as the brand BMW is bigger than X5. Similarly.. people who own other products like 3 series.. 5 series.. respect their cars.. since it comes from BMW.. The pride of owing any BMW product is bigger than owing the product itself.

Now presume if X5 was being manufactured by Geely of China.. then would anybody take pride in owning that? the obvious answer is BIG NO. As people respect the BMW brand... so they respect X5. And the way automotive industry has evolved... Companies have always tried to have Solid Brand name.. instead of solid brand name of Products.

One more example.. People go mad over the quality of Honda.. Now anything coming from Honda means...its gonna be a quality product.. wehter it be Bike or a Car or a Robot. So it means.. Honda is bigger brand name than.. any of its produicts...

And this is the way companies should be working.. Create a solid brand name... (by launching good products.. ofcourse).. It should work this way that.. people should trust the company... and not just one product.. So anything coming from that trusted company is assumed to be trustworthy.

The right intellect mind can understand from above.. where I had been indicating at. For rest.. I can make it more simple. If Rajiv Sir (Bajaj) is planning to drop Bajaj naming.. and strengtheneing Pulsar brand.. I think this is going to be a wrong move. What Bajaj should do that... they should make their brand name stronger.. So that people trust the Bajaj brand.

Now what will add more enticing name to Bajaj.. is the solid product Pulsar. it goes like this.. Solid Brand Name BAJAJ + Solid Product PULSAR. That will bring respect and pride of owing a Pulsar.. and the pride of owing a BAJAJ product.

Look at it this way.. I have seen people putting.. Honda Logo on their BAJAJ bikes.. Why cant it happen one day.. when people will Put BAJAJ logo on HONDA bikes?? This will only happen when Bajaj puts in so much confidence in Bajaj name.. that people will take pride in owning a Bajaj product. (And mind it Honda also makes mopeds 100cc bikes)

Yes talking about Pulsar.. THey can Focus on Strengthing Pulsar series.. and potraying as P- Pulsar.. P-Performance. But still maintain the Bajaj Logo on Pulsars.

Another example to make point more clear.. Lancer Evo is a solid performace product from Mitsubishi. Have you guys ever witnessed that.. Mitsubishi is contemplating to drop Mitsubishi from Lancer??

                    Thats my opinion.

Edit - The Bajaj Brand name has SOLID penetration in country. Bajaj has been in existence in India since decades.. and their is lot of emotions attached to BAJAJ brand name. The decision to remove Bajaj name.. can have devastating results. You go to any part of country and people have grown up riding a Bajaj product.. they have lived with Bajaj product for years. When their bike or scooter got stolen or old.. they replaced it with New Bajaj product.

So a seperate brand name can be created for Performance products.. and Pulsar can be transfered to that Series.

^^ one thing i would like to point out is that its not always necessarily a manufacturer brand only which stands out. Models and iconic names like civic, corolla, swift etc for honda, toyota, suzuki respectively have been holding a strong brand value for over 30 years or more.

So there is no harm in investing in a brand of a manufacturer. Besides honda would sound better on a engine than bajaj. Not that i would not be proud of it, but bajaj has a great thing going on with the pulsar family, they need to capitalize further by taking it one step ahead now.

Agreed.. those products (Civic.. corolla.. swift) got succesful and became iconic products.. and brought good name to the Company..and Brand name eventually grew stronger.. Eventually in future when these companies launched new products.. consumers trusted the brands as their last product was a hit. So the brand name got bigger than product itself.

And today what impression it gives is that.. Civic is iconic product from Honda. And its due to Honda Badge.. it still sells. Yes Honda has kept the product very good.. to maintain interest in Civic.

Another example I can corelate.. when JLR was acquired by Tata.. it was speculated that.. would Tata be able to maintain iconic brands.. as tata is a low cost automobile manufacturer.. And JLR is a premium brand.

When Toyota was to come out with premium brand.. they prefered to come out with Lexus Brand.. as people would have never bought expensive toyotas. And any car under Lexus's umbrella.. has been a premuim product.

So if Bajaj thinks of dropping Bajaj name at all.. then its a wrong move. What they can do is create a performance Brand.. Say BTM (Bajaj + KTM) and transfer.. rebadge Pulsars as BTM Pulsar. Pulsar is a product's name.. it should not be made as a brand name.

NOOOOOOOOO--- i'm not from Bajaj.. I work for TCS, Bangalore , but I own a pulsar.. cool down.
..yeah..that's what you think... isn't Land Rover and Jaguar larger than life brands that were in Ford's fold just a couple of years back and then our own Tata's got them. But did they try to make any changes to them..hell no!! that would be suicidal.. My point is can Bajaj try and put Pulsar in the same league??

Did you ever think of Ford when you see a Jaguar.. don't say it.. I know the answer..Even the Ferrari.. how many people first think of Fiat when they see Ferrari??

What I'm trying to say is if only Pulsar has a logo like a Ferrari.. you see the logo and know that it's a pulsar.. then Bajaj can go ahead with styling changes and still brand it as a Pulsar (of course they have already done that with P135, but for the logo part).

Yeah.. I mean to have a logo for Pulsar brand.. even I haven't heard of bikes that have logos.. But we do have enough examples from cars. But did you ever observe that Honda has different logo for Cars and Bikes. You might think of this topic as next level.. logo for brand!!

exactly.. why can't Pulsar be that brand name, you see creating a separate brand name is not a joke.. It can't be done overnight. That's why Tata spent so much to get Jaguar & Land Rover. You are talking so much about Honda.. so I guess you are from Honda or you own a product of Honda or just love the brand.. whatever it is. Did you observe that Honda has separate logos for their bikes and Cars?? why didn't they put wing rider symbol on cars?? any guess? My question is can Bajaj do something similar with Pulsar.. I know there are people who talk about reliability issues, quality issues etc.. that's not the question here. Those issues will get sorted as Bajaj brings in technology upgrades.. and learn the art of manufacturing bikes. I think products from Bajaj stable are far more reliable than they were ten years ago. My question is specific to Pulsar brand of bikes.. I got this thought as many of my pals refer to Pulsar as a brand first.. not as a Bajaj product. With four products under Pulsar brand it has got enough share of premium segment or 125+ segment, to make it an independent brand.
