  • Discover100dtsi or Twister or TVS Star City-Value for the money

Hi guys. Myself Soham, recently joined xBhp and new into biking too. I am 20 year old and my height is 5'7''.I was looking for a bike within Rs. 50,000(so no options except 100cc!). My requirements are -
    1. a 100cc performance bike (please don't laugh, I know 4stroke 100cc means only mileage but here, mileage isn't a big point)
    2. Value for the money.
    3. stable and able to cruise at high speed..at least 65kmph easily(well..how can I demand 75-80 from a 100cc !!)
    4. stress free in ride with a pillion..so pulling power should be good.
    5. Reliable(means should not break down in a lonely place making me half dead)
    6. Not bad for short weekend tours.

    That's all.
My bets are - Discover 100 dtsi, Twister and TVS Star city

Discover 100 dtsi- least powerful(power 7.7ps and torque 7.85N-m),smallest engine, although some of the bike mags said it is the quickest in 0-60km. It has got an extra gear too(5th) in this segment. Value for money.
My tension is--Can it pull well with pillion with this little power figures & Can it cruise at 65kmph in a long distance ride? My favorite bet.

Twister- (power 9ps=HH Glamour, torque=9N-m)Best out there on paper. So called Honda reliability, best looking 110cc but...
price tag is too heavy(52k for drum & 55k for disc !!!)
    lacks 5th gear
not so comfortable pillion seat for girls.
Please don't recommend it just for looks only as it is tough to digest the more than half lakh (()) price tag!

TVS Star City- Decent on paper(power 8.3bhp & torque 8.1N-m). Don't know much about it. Looks average. Some mags says handling is better than most bikes(100cc) and stable at high speed.

Would be glad if you guys help me to choose the best and 'value for the money' bike among three.
And about newly launched Discover 150..is it really worth buying a 150cc with no tachometer at Rs.46k ex-showroom??
I discovered the speed of darkness!

Discover 150 is your best bet, 13BHP and 5 gears are enough for what your requirement is, plus company claims it has a good mileage, so no need to worry about it as well. OR else consider Pulsar 135CC and call it a day.

        well,
discover 100 is manufacturing is closed. u have to option 1)CB Twister-----gives u a millage of 60-65km/l and a speed of 85-90km/h.I did 75 at third gear, believe it its just smooth and reliable too, most of all its looks----mind blowing[Digital console, disc brakes, self start and most of all technology from honda.]

        2) star city is good but u can go for star sports, it has a very good looks. It can also give a millage of 60-65km/l and a speed of 85km/h.but its parts have a huge price.

Now u think which is suitable for u.

Instead of Star City consider Star Sport, it looks better.
Remaining Pulsar 135 or Gladiator can also be a good choice.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

My bets are - Discover 100 dtsi, Twister and TVS Star city
First, the Disco 150 would be out of your budget and is definitely thirstier than the other 3 options you have mentioned. If you can stretch your budget, consider both Disco 150 & P135 before finalizing.

Disco 100's pickup and smoothness at higher speeds is bettered by the Star City even with one cog less. The Star City scores better even in handling and comfort. Mileage is about the same with the Dicso scoring about a 2 KMPL lead. That apart, looks and gadgets - Disco is the king.

I'd have told you Twister all the way - but the rear grab-rail spoils the sport. The seat is comfy tough. It suits all your 6 points the best except that the side ways sitting ladies have to find a way to hold the bike safely.

            Did you try the Jive?
Something tells me that you would like it. It has very good torque and pulls ahead very easily. So much that if you are not careful in the 1st gear you will do a wheelie unintentionally.

It is also true that the Star City's fiber parts & some engine parts are more expensive than their Hero Honda counterparts. But, the overall package is still matches up to the overall vehicle cost.

PS: TVS Sport is 100cc and is very low on pickup but is good to ride + good mileage + looks very good.

BTW, why aren't the Hero Honda's & Yamaha's in the discussion? The YBR100 (or what ever - the new launch from Yamaha) looks promising. Those Yamaha 100cc engines are very reliable.

Bike mags says its ex-showroom price is only 46,000/- !!!..so on road should be max 51k..thus fits in my bill, but the main problem- it lacks tachometer..

Discover 100's manufacturing is not closed. It's very much in sales and is currently selling close to a lakh units per month.

And secondly, Twister doesnt have any digi-console.

                @...ssssoнλм!

Twister is more modern looking amongst others and also returns superb mileage with better performance. It's costly, though. Star City is a proven performer and has 5 year warranty on it's engine. And Discover provides maximum bang for buck.So Test ride all the bikes you have mentioned and make your pick.

And do test ride the Jive.

Hi Soham, If you can stretch your budget then you can go for The Discover 150, bcoz eventhough it might not have great features, a 150cc bike at 46000 ex-showroom is value for money. It might not be performance oriented like a pulsar but afterall being a 150 it will have an edge over your other options. OR else if you want a no non-sense 100 cc well within your budget then go for discover 100. A twister has all the frills of a larger capacity bike and better looks than any other 100cc bike but the top model is 47 k ex-showroom . If you want to go for the twister with disc brakes then better get the discover 150 instead.

P.S.- None of your other options have a tacho meter too. If you really want tacho meter then try the Pulsar 135 LS but it will be 55K+ on road!

..... I am sure you meant Discover 135...!

                    @ Topic Starter

Stretch your budget and consider between Pulsar 135LS and Discover 150 which would fall under similar price brackets on road...

While P135 would be more of an all round product with a good mix of supreme performance, good mileage and decent load carrying capability, Discover 150 would be better and at ease while cruising at higher speeds and carrying heavier loads.

Mileage, obviously 135 would be better....

If 50k is what you have strictly, than CB Twister base version would be the best bet....
To confuse you further....you can also consider Shine..base version

Go for Disco100.. It will certainly fulfill your list of requirements.. Even Twister does it.. but the price tag is a bit too much.
and I'm not sure about Star city. In case you are going for Disco 150.. don't be worried about tacho, it's useful, but not that you can't do without it.
