  • Yamaha GX400 - Is it worth the trouble?

Hi people. There's a really old rotten GX400 lying around in my compound. The original owner has abandoned it. Since I know the person I'm thinking of taking the bike and having it restored. Since I haven't contacted him yet I don't know its history.

I basically wanted details about this bike. I've never seen one on Indian roads. How much did it retail at? Assuming it's salvageable, how rare is it and is it worth the trouble?

Can you show us pictures please???

I think it would be worth it since its a RAREbike... Ask how much the owner wants to sell for. and tell us.

I can take pix tomorrow but they'll be poor quality as I only have a camera phone. Really sorry I didn't take any but I shall and they should be up by this time tomorrow.

First look at availability of parts, and source service manuals/owners guide etc for the bike. Then look into the feasibility of the project.

              @ samrath

              go for it dude....
almost a month ago i had seen a 1973 yamaha tx 500 under my friends apartment..
spent all the time in the world to convince my dad and he finally said okay...

filled with joy and doing all the homework about the bike and collecting service manuals and stuff i reached that place to ask the owner about selling it to me but it was no longer there..........

he sold it off to someone else....
do it before its too late! atleast i know how it feels when its off..

even i used to ask myself and people that is it worth, i figured out that it of course is.

Um, how does one go about this? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

^^ not a stupid question man.. analyse the condition of the bike. See what parts are missing.

Google is your friend, find as many pictures, threads, websites you can pertaining to this bike. That will give you a reference of what you are looking at, and what should be there.

Also zero in on the year of the bike you are looking at, this will help you know the differences ( if there were any by the manufacturer ), between this bike and other models of different years.

There are a number of sites, that let you download a service manual. if you are lucky you might get it for free, else a little credit card shopping will get it for you.

Before all this, search for availability of parts, parts for sale for this bike that you can arrange and get.

A lot of parts people might be able to source for you locally, but its always better to keep your options open.

I ended up contacting people in holland and turkey for parts for my Jawa!! so thats how it is!!!

You will have your homework ready in a day or two with extensive reading and studying the bike online. Also an idea of parts pricing will give you the approximate budget you are looking for.

Being a imported bike, it would be wise to arrange for consumables at the same time that you are arranging for replacement parts.

this needs a lot of work. You could use the engine on another bike and do a mod job. But restoring this would require a lot of time and effort, and not even counting the money.

make your mind up for it.
