  • How to get a bike license in Mumbai without going to a driving school

I have been driving cars for many years now but still don't know how to ride a bike.

When I came back to India recently, I decided to learn biking but was told by my friends that the driving schools here in Mumbai don't provide two-wheeler training. However, apparently, they still help you get a two-wheeler's license by taking care of all the leg work involved in the application process.

If one chooses to apply for a bike's license without going through a driving school and practicing riding on a friend's bike, a few questions along those lines (after having gone through the Maharashtra Traffic Department's website) -

[The RTO in question is the one close to Four Bungalows, Mumbai]

    1. Who fills up the Medical Certificate (Form 1A) when you apply for the learner's license? Can I have my family doctor certify it or do I have to go to a "government" medical practioner only?

    3. How can I get a test date?

    4. Can I take my own bike for the test? If not, what do they typically test you on - a bike or a scooter? If it's a bike, what make/model is it typically?

    5. What is the bike test like?
    a) What's the route like?
    b) What are you typically asked to do during the test?
    c) How long does it last?

    6. Any other tips?

All said and done, is it worth the effort going solo, or is the system so broke that I should not expect a license unless I go through an agent?

Going through an Agent would be THE most convenient!
There would be a 'road side doctor' who will give you a fitness certificate in his car parked next to the RTO office.
The test would involve ONLY a check if you can kick start or launch a bike
