  • Our Unofficial Camparo: the Yamaha FZ16 and the Honda Unicorn Dazzler

I found that the xbhp forum sorely missed the newest biggest entrant in the 150cc market the Honda Unicorn Dazzler. Hence using my friend's bike I did this comparo.

well here are the differences i noted.

*Console- the display on dazzler is smallish while overall it looks better than fz and has a clock(though small readability in sunlight is unaffected unlike in fz probably cause of angling). fz's tachometer and fuel gauge are hard to read in direct sunlight while speeds are well legible. Hope the font size and display on the dazzler was bigger.

*Ride- the ride is very plush on the dazzler almost unicorn like while the fz's suspension setup is hard(though mine was set in soft!!).

*Handling- the first thing you notice is the dazzler feels small, after sitting in fz you will notice how small the dazzler tank as well as the whole bike really is. the wide handle bars, big forks, tyres and the large tank of the fz give confidence, while the the dazzler though "feels" small is good in its own rights. cornering and straight line stability on both the bikes were very similar !!

*Gear- the BIGGEST difference i find on both the bikes is in gearing !! the fz is very short geared while the dazzler is comfortably tall but not too tall to lose its pulling power. JUST PERFECT !!! the fz would rule in the city maybe but overall thumbs up to dazzler it doesnt feel under pressure in the highway nor do you have to change gears often in the city. also the gearbox of dazzler had a unicorn feel to it while fz is very mechanical in the good sense !! you could happily drive off in 5th gear @ 25kmph in the fz but the same isnt possible in the dazzler which made it knock and stop every time I rode it in traffic !! lol

*Fuel economy- SECOND BIGGEST difference is economy.. how much ever we ripped, the dazzler returned atleast 45-50kmpl while the fz happily returned 25-30kmpl !! if your a college guy the fz makes no sense in this aspect !!

*Braking- Though the dazzler comes with disks both up front and in rear i found it too "soft" compared to the fz. I dint miss the rear disk on the fz probably compensated by the bigger tyres which offered better grip.

*Vibes- both bikes had vibes @ 60kmph and slight vibes around 80.. but its more pronounced in fz cause above 90kmph the engine of fz feels very stressed probably its psychological... the dazzler did a top end of 121kmph while my fz did 117kmph(both speedo).. both bikes were stable but as i said before the dazzler seemed stress free compared to fz.

*Design- its purely personal but i would like a mix and match of both.

*Exhaust note- The dazzler has a very sporty exhaust note unlike the purring of the fz @ low revs. At higher revs while the dazzler's note got more pronounced fz's note got real throaty !!

*Service- i found yamaha service much better than honda's !! the staff were unresponsive and lacked any customer skills. i wouldn't say yamaha service is the best but the staff atleast seem to acknowledge our presence.

    Tidbits !!

*dazzler lacked the engine kill switch which i sorely missed.. and no parking lamp (not missed).

*the top speed quotes are speedo speeds.. dont fight over which bike has the best top end.. they would only be marginally different since we where almost neck to neck.. which makes no difference to our comfortable crusing speeds.

*again, in acceleration, there was little difference. 0-60 fz is good above which automatically dazzler takes over.

*i found the built quality of yamaha better than honda.. probably its just me !!

i just covered all the points which my friend faced and what i thought would be faced by the general youth in deciding on these two very similar bikes with almost the same price tag. any other questions or things i missed please let me know. and do tell me if this review helped you, my first BIG post in xbhp !!

i'm game for the video idea !! but i dont see how comparing the gs alone would help readers.. since its a very different offering.. maybe we can do a full 150cc comparo !!

Thats quite a level headed comparo. Kudos!
Something you missed is ergonomics, seat comfort, riding position, clutch action, etc
I hope the thread doesnt turn ugly with brand bashing and all that!

I am utterly disappointed with the Dazzler. It is very unlike Honda. Very bad plastics and huge gaps and not fitting panels. So much for an expensive offering from a company with a tagline "I Enjoy Quality". It really sucks in the plastics department. It is like a cost cutting bike and reminded me of Logan.

In short, we examined more than 10 bikes to pick up one that doesn't have huge panel gaps, peeling off emblem, cracked or scratched panels, rust, etc and still didn't get one we are fully satisfied with.

The Stunner from the same stable is too good in comparison. Even the Twister felt a lot better. Beside the Unicorn it feels like torn paper lantern. It feels as if people bought engines from Honda and got the chassis and panels made locally (very shoddy job for a Honda) and assembled them with horrible mechanics (very shoddy job for any bike).

It rides good. Pulls well, has a nice engine note, console looks good, comfotable, flickable, very good headlight, etc, etc

I'm thinking "why on earth did Honda make the Dazzler" and when they are making a flagship offering why does the quality fall so severely short of their lowest priced model"???

Dazzler dreamers, be aware. Make sure you are all okay with the bike before you buy. My dream got busted.

+1 hydbiker , though I have been waiting for a zma with rear disc brake setup as an upgrade to my uni was tempted to check out the dazzler , was seriously disappointed by the plastic parts of the bike & the narrow tank, but would also like to state that all the other upgrade were very welcome .

I feel this comparo is more biased towards Dazzler; something seems to be still missing in the comparison

@yellowspunk: Good comparo. BTW I don't see any bias. Just simple and sincere. Hope this will encourage others to contribute.

                      +1 to hyd biker.

How come Honda shifted all of a sudden to plastics? The Bike feels like a huge heap of plastics and was a serious turn off. Engineers at honda had spent so much time on the engine and chassis et all but failed to impress in the styling. Typical Honda (forget the stunner, even though it might just not be stunning to look at.

I'm really looking forward to doing the 150 CC comparo Minus the SZ. I'd love to make it on the lines of topgear minus the biased attitude, Mileage factor and the Bling and the stig. But I ended up changing my plans because Topgear is typically all about this.

For me, as a normal biker (70% city rides + 30% tours) Dazzler wins the heart. Good FE, Excellent VFM! is what a normal commuter wants.

Its not about just vrooming the engine, sharp cuts, top speeds...A true biker should understand his machine
