  • 31st July 1st August 2010: Infy Chandigarh rides to Chindi

It had been almost 4 months since the inception of the BikerZone in Infy, Chandigarh. There was a time, in the yesteryears, when I used to go around looking for people with the zest for travelling on two wheels. But I could only find a handful. Moreover, I was pretty happy with my solo sojourns!

    The group:

That was when my apprehensions diminished. These gentlemen were good, I could sense that. With a wry smile on my face I gradually moved to the head of the pack, a place where I was going to stay for most of the ride.

I reached Kumarhatti and waited for like an eternity. The first group arrived and informed me that Rahul (the second RE rider) had suffered a puncture near Koti. I called up the ride sweep, Archit, to know the situation. The puncture had been repaired and they were heading upwards. Hence, I moved on, as the first group lead to wait for the second group and then proceed.

    Random shots

We reached Tatthapaani in around 1pm and we still had some 40 kms to cover for Chindi. Here everyone relished pakoras and tea along with other light snacks.

Moving on, we had plenty of small photography cum smoke cum pee breaks. But one thing that I found highly impressive was that the rider in front used to slow down and then eventually stop, if the rider behind him disappeared from his RVM for more than a minute. This showed the collective responsibility that everyone shouldered!

We were at Chindi at 3 pm. The ride had taken 9 hours for the 200 odd kilometers which was fair considering the huge group size!

The Mamleshwar is a brilliant piece of property! The rooms are fabulous. The interiors, the space and ambience were to die for. The moment we reached, Archit began the process of allotting rooms. Thereafter, we had snacks that included cheese pakoras and juice amongst other things. Much to my surprise the dining hall was equally spacious, big enough for 30 odd people to be seated comfortably.

    Some fun shots:

Some amazing moments later, dinner was served. Scrumptious a meal it was. Chicken, Mutton, Rice, Paneer dishes did rounds and everyone ate to their limit. People were happy, they were having fun and it was satisfying to see that look on their face!

Archit and I had another beer. Then maybe another.

Finally I called it a day at 1 am.

Very nice log Vaibhav. I always like the way you put experiences in writing... simple but effective. I also appreciate the fact that you are inspiring a lot of people to do rides & enjoy the hills saddling best way of doing it, i.e. bikes.

The waiting point before Shimla in photograph looks like same place where we halted on our way to Naldehra.

Have fun & respect to you for doing such things,

A group of 30 people and most of them newbies to touring(my guess), kudos to you and your group for reaching the destination in a disciplined manner. We want to see many more excursion from this group.

Thanks Aryan! These days it has been raining cats and dogs all the time and thus I have not been able to go out and click that often. Official work is an add on. But don't worry I'll try my best not to disappoint you, soon.

I bought the D5K after the ride. So, the pics are not from it.

Thanks guys! The participants of this showed exemplary order and discipline. Apart from that everyone followed the details and instructions given which actually made my work less difficult.

And my friends, Archit, Prashant and Ranjeet were of immense help and without their efforts, this wouldn't have been a success.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in any manner, in this ride

                        The day after

                        Poori Aalu:

Some of the fellows warded off to Karsog and thereabouts owing to which we left the Mamleshwar as late as 12 pm.

Some random photos before we left:

Progress was smooth and soon we were on the banks of the raging Sutlej, at Tattapaani.

The slush after the bridge at Tattapaani:

On the fork to Shimla and Dhami at Basantpur, we took the one towards Dhami. Two reasons were that the road towards Dhami was sans traffic and it was more scenic.

I was overwhelmed by the fact that how religiously, the other bikers followed one after the other at same speeds. It was not only a visual treat but was also a pleasing deep within. Being up ahead you have an extra responsibility, not only of the rider behind you but of the whole group as a whole. A small incident that occurred was that Divyesh got stung by a wasp! We stopped. But much to my relief, the brave chap was on throttle within minutes as if nothing had occurred!

Stopped for a short snack break at Dhami before continuing to Arki-Kunihar. Kunihar is around 28 kms from Dharampur. Here an idea struck me. I could take the fellows directly to Pinjore from an inner Himachali road that I knew off. The idea was put to practice.

                        The sun was going down.

The road was bad! And owing to the recent rains that had flooded most of Northern India, it was muddy as well. At that point of time I was cursing myself for bringing those folks on such roads. I believed that this could be the one mistake that I was consistently avoiding. Or atleast I thought so.
We continued. Night fell. It became dark. Visibility fell. Tougher it got. But nothing could surpass the beauty of 20 bright headlamps on a dark night!

And I was paranoid that these folks might think of me as a fanatic!

I realized after interacting with them that deep down inside, we all are!

It was decided that we would all meet up at the Infosys Gate 1, the place where we left from initially.

The group photo, post the ride:

The promise I had made to myself of bringing everyone back in good shape was kept. I was a satisfied man. The folks were happy, and that is all that I had wanted on the first place. Never had I imagined that a solo loner like me, who barely interacts and who swears by solo rides would one day successfully lead a group of 26 people on a ride to the mighty Himalayas!

                        -Vaibhav

It was very nice to see people were disciplined and I must admire your courage for taking the responsibility of such a large group. BRAVO!!

Someday would love to ride with you in Himachal. Being a Himachali myself I just love riding in hills and as luck would have it I have no hill around me. But I have my hopes. Would ping you sometime for a ride.

My congratulations and Best Wishes for future rides brother.
