  • Yamaha Gladiator RS Air filter Change from Paper type to Foam type

    The Yamaha Gladiator type RS/SS has a Paper type Air filter which is rather a very good one . The only problem is when it gets dirty and cleaning by compressed air does not help much and you have to replace it. When I checked with Yamaha Service Center the cost was Rs. 1400 a month back (Now its a reasonable Rs 250 ), it was then I decided to switch to Foam type air filter from the previous generation Gladiator.

    I got the following things:
    1.The Foam type air filter element ,both outer and inner ,and these were already oiled units.
    2.Engine Oil Yamalube 20W40 SG ( I find this better than yamalube 20W40 SL) also is priced less than SL.
    3.The paper type Air filter - I will use it in summer days.

    Step 1.
    Opened the Air filter Box removed the dirty unit.

    Step 2
    Cut out the paper element and made sure nothing is left out on the edges, if you have paper pieces left out that can clog the carb.

    Step 3
    Put the inner element first then the outer.

      @arun,
      A few questions for you:-
      1.) Does this foam type filter has any extra advantage other than re-usability like better performance or mileage?
      2.) What's the price of it??
      3.) Does this reduce the period at which a normal paper filter should be cleaned??

        @Madhav:
        1. As far our gladiator's air filter goes the paper type is always better than the foam type.Prashant has already replaced the air filter on his bike with a foam type and said that he didn't notice any difference .neither did I. The paper air filter on my bike was totally clogged and with the new one I do find the bike "breathing" better. Haven't checked the mileage yet .

        2. The price of the Filter(outer + inner) was around 90 to 100.(Cant find the bill )

        3. The foam type can be cleaned and reused and they would perform as good as a new one, not the case with paper type. I now drive in at peak hours and it rains most of the evenings and its good to have the Foam type filter than paper type .The foam type is better suited for dusty and moist conditions , the same reason why foam type filters are preferred in dirt bikes.
