@Ananth, first Thanks for the thread & appreciate to have come up with your idea on DIY meets. Really first of the kind in xBhp.

Good initiative there Ananth. Knowing one's bike technically is as much a confidence giver as is knowing it as a ride.

I have one suggestion regarding the agenda of the meet. Instead of taking up a whole lot of DIY topics, stick to a chosen 2-3 topics for each meet. Say you guys pick 1) Drive chain adjustment, 2) Changing Disc Pads and 3) Tuning the carb. Now do this on a variety of bike models and document each through pictures while someone notes down the procedure.

Covering the chain-adjustment procedure for even some 5-6 different models will not only make the DIY useful across the board but also expose the participants to the many variations and subtle nuances of this simple but very important DIY. There is a lot more to learn than what merely meets the eye .

I am planning an exhaustive document on bike preparation for long rides, primarily with Indian bikes and within our traffic and road-conditions milieu. This will encompass preventive maintenance, identifying critical spares, lighting mods, seat comfort enhancement and mods related to luggage carrying. Inputs from such threads as this will be surely be incorporated in it.

Aargee: we've done this a couple of times here in Delhi before.

OF Sir, people are little apprehensive about losing their steeds since its first time for most people. What I'd in mind was something like...
          1. Spark plug session
          2. Chain adjustment session
          3. Front wheel session

In that way, spark plug session can be worked on the participants motorcycles. For ex, we could try on GS150R, R15, Unicorn, ZMA/R & this will also require carrying tools specific for the job. Hope this is what you intented.

Oh!!! Ok just that I didn't notice it; any links to this thread is appreciated.

Also, what's your take on hiring/renting/leasing a mechanic for this activity? How should we approach? Most of us are free on a Sunday & that's the day most mechanics take rest; What's your suggestion of going about on this one?

Wow this sounds like a very interesting G2G where one could get to know the inner side of the companion.

Xbhp Bike school - is this the begining of it?

Ananth, great idea to come up with a thread. I would definitely be part of this exercise. Well, the platform is set as to the idea. So now we need to finalize on schedule. If this is not decided in coming days, probably we can again discuss the same during our offline meet coming sunday.

As I stand committed, if a mech cannot be arranged, then I can host a workshop session.

I'm not touching any of the tools nor anyone's beloved rides , instead stand & guide the members to play with their own steeds.

Let the group decide as what needs to be done; I'm game to teach something within my limits.

Thanks OF Sir. We would split the agenda over the coming weeks & concentrate more on Quality of Learning than the Quantity involved.

And yes, 1) Drive chain adjustment, 2) Changing Disc Pads and 3) Tuning the carb are the main topics & would use this thread to update any useful information.

We are also planning to document the GTG, the same would be posted. Best wishes for your documentary & i hope it would be of immense use for all of us. Thanks again.

Yes, Planning & Scheduling would be disussed OFFLINE. Lets just use this thread for informative posts alone.

Sounds good, For now let the 1st meet be of just to cover some 3 - 4 points in the agenda & redo it with different bikes.

                      1. Identification to several parts in a motorcycle
                      2. Clutch & throttle play adjustment

Participating motorcycles - Rx, Unicorn (Sri?), ZMR (Ananth?) and...?

Pls up with a convenient time

For the time, i guess sunday mornings (Like our other G2G) would be fine. But i'm more curious as to the location, because we cant have this meet in front of Cozzee.

^True, we will need to decide in coming days. Weather is also right now playing spoil sport, need to consider that as well.

                          @Aargee : I shall bring my unicorn.

It is not like you force people to hand you over their bike for demonstration of procedures. Its up to each person to volunteer with his/her willingness to learn. And a little mess here and there is a part of the learning process. Didn't we all go through it. I remember opening up the gear-box side engine cowling of my Rajdoot with the intention of adjusting the clutch! Needless to say, I lost all the oil and ruined my courtyard.

Of course, being with xBhp, it'll not be that bad but errors are an intrinsic part of hands-on learning.

Like you've planned, get people to familiarize with the parts of their bikes. Taking out and putting back the wheels is something basic to learn and has very few avenues of error involved. And wheel removal opens up the road to brake service. Proceeding methodically and in small steps will make the learning trouble-free.

Glad to know; any idea to include these in the magazine as well? Pls provide your inputs so that we can work accordingly to suit your requirements as well.
This could be featured in the mag in the DIY section. As for the procedures, just follow those outlined in the DIY for the forum. Document each action with pictures and related text.

Oh!!! Ok just that I didn't notice it; any links to this thread is appreciated.
I doubt if a separate thread was created. It was a part of the Delhi G2G thread. I'd organized a workshop on motorcycle dynamics, geometry related to riding and on riding techniques. Another was about this DIY thing.

Just start with these G2G's. I hope the other cities also take cue from Chennai. We are working on making this a regular organized feature at quite a few places across the country with relevant corporate tie-ups and invited experts. All in good time though. But first, there has to be a visible enthusiasm amongst the members to warrant utilization of time, effort and expense.

Also, what's your take on hiring/renting/leasing a mechanic for this activity? How should we approach? Most of us are free on a Sunday & that's the day most mechanics take rest; What's your suggestion of going about on this one?
Why not. If you know some good mechanic, get him in. You guys can pool in and give him a honorarium too.
