  • UK: Alarmingly low motorcycle sales figures. 125CCs still the best selling bikes

2010 HAS been a tough year for motorcycle sales. The industry has seen a 14.7 percent drop in motorcycle sales so far this year.

However, there are encouraging signs for the future, as sales of 125cc machines are packing out the top 10 and prmising solid sales of larger capacity machines in the future.

Yamaha and Honda dominate the top three, but BMW also have a solid footing in the top 10, with four models featured, including the S1000RR, with over 1,000 unit sales. Honda's Fireblade is not far behind the S1000RR, proving you don't need traction control and power modes to shift superbikes.

The combined sales of BMW's R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure would put that model on the top spot, above the Honda CBF125.

Top 10 motorcycle registrations in 2010

    Rank / Bike / Unit sold / --
    1 Honda CBF 125 1,484 2.4%
    2 Yamaha YBR 125 1,198 1.9%
    3 Yamaha YZF R125 1,152 1.8%
    4 BMW S 1000 RR 1,009 1.6%
    5 Honda CBR 1000 RR 919 1.5%
    6 BMW R 1200 GS 838 1.3%
    7 BMW R 1200 GS ADVENTURE 778 1.2%
    8 Yamaha XC 125 733 1.2%
    9 BMW R 1200 RT 676 1.1%
    10 Honda VFR 1200 673 1.1%

In other news, Suzuki (UK) sales are down by 60% and is shutting down dealerships in the country. Suzuki have given 43 dealers their 12 month termination notices this week.

    Points to be noted:

    > European motorcycle market is in deep slow down. Ireland, Italy and Belgium showed 40%, 8% and 10% drop in sales in motorcycles respectively, when compared with last year sales
    > Legendary CBR 125 lost its market to its own sister CBF 125 and rival Yamaha's.... at last.
    > BMW S1000RR is proving to be one of the most successful bike in sales (leaving behind its litre class rivals) this year

@Pulsater - Are these yearly numbers or quarterly? Since you said 2010 so I'm presuming that they are yearly numbers but when to when will help in understanding the numbers in a better way.

No wonder the KTM 125 Duke makes so much sense in Europe.

With life becoming more expensive to sustain. There is a good chance that the trend in search of more economical mode of transport and small engine fuel efficient machines will become even more pronounce all over the world. These small capacity engines may very well become the 'norm' instead of being viewed as small. The bad news is, there is also a good chance that we in India may never get the chance to taste powerful machines. Yes, there will always be powerful machines for those that can afford. The problem is, the disparity between the common man machines and the powerful ones may get bigger.

Oh! don't mind my gloom and doom scenario, I'm very poor in prediction .

Inspite of all that India and China are the best countries to do trade in. Premium bikes (and cars) market is growing with 50% rate annually.

hmmm.... looks like Indian motorcycle manufacturers might get newer markets for their 125 cc bikes, other than just the 3rd world countries...

who knows, this might make them spend more on their R&D and may be this might let them make higher powered bikes for India?? wishful thinking??
