Survey rates Mumbai city motorists among the best !
Report submitted during the recent Road Safety Week finds that despite highest number of accidents, fatal mishaps among the least in Mumbai!

You might not believe it, but according to a recent report, Mumbai motorists are the best in the country, with an 'inherent good sense of traffic'.
The report has been prepared by DCP (police training) Sanjay Mohite, who studied data on road accidents across the country. The IPS officer submitted the report to the State Home Department during the road safety week (Jan 10-17).
As per the report, which records and analyses data from 1970 to 2008, though Maharashtra records the maximum number accidents in the country (15 per cent), it manages to keep fatalities reasonably low (10 per cent).
Mumbai in particular witnesses the highest number of accidents in the country but ranks only behind Kolkata in least number of fatalities per one lakh of population.
Mohite said, "Mumbai has a very high density of vehicles as it is a congested city. This leads to a lot of accidents. But fatalities remain very low because most of these are minor accidents. Mumbai not only has very good traffic rule enforcement, but the citizens have a good sense of traffic."
Stressing the importance of helmets, both for the rider and the pillion, the reports said over 70 per cent of fatalities in accidents happen due to skull fracture.
The report also records double the number of fatalities in rural areas compared to urban areas in the state, even though rural areas witness almost half the number of accidents compared to urban areas.
Mohite's report states that China, which once recorded the highest number of road fatalities in the world, has reduced the same from over 98,000 in 2005 to 89,000 in 2006. The figure has been constantly declining, while India records 10 per cent of total road fatalities in the world.
Despite this, the government's concern for road safety is anything but impressive. The report records that in 2008-09 the government has allocated merely Rs 73 crore for road safety infrastructure in the entire country. Of this only Rs 54 crore have been used.
