  • ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time)

This thread is the end result of a conversation I had with an xbhpian a couple of days back.

Let me draw you a picture. It was an average day so far, the sun was coming down a bit heavier than usual perhaps. I was heading to the hospital to check on my friend to had been in an accident the last evening. When I reached there, I met some other rider buddies of mine who had come to see the unfortunate rider. We were waiting in the waiting room for the green signal from the hospital staff for us to go and see how our friend was doing, and this is the conversation that happened:

Me: Bro, you bought a DSG jacket na?
    Him: Yeah man, it's good.
Me: So, why aren't you wearing it right now?
Him: Why should I be wearing it all the time?

I didn't continue with the conversation then as one of the attendants came in the room and told us that we were good to go. But I really don't understand the point of having riding gear and not using it for the added convenience of being practically naked while riding a bike. If you do this then what's the difference between you and a poser who buys costly stuff just to show off?

I've met some riders who have premium riding gear but don't use it due to the fear of wear and tear over normal use or the fear of getting the gear damaged in case of a crash. This to me is foolishness, gear is of no use if it's safely placed in your cupboard at home and you're on the street getting rear-ended by some drunk fool who didn't see you or the red light where you're standing.

I'll have to admit that I've been doing this too for the past few months, having a good sparx lid and still using the good for nothing compac that is worthy of being thrown away in garbage. Why did I do this you ask? I did this because I feared that since the sparx is a flashy lid, it might get stolen and I paid more than 4k for it. What a jackass I've been all this time.

Oh and I have knee guards as well which I don't use unless it's a sunday and I go for a ride. Total foolishness on my part.

This is gonna stop from this point onwards. Atleast I'm gonna follow the moto of ATGATT i.e. ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME.

That is really nerve breaking to read!!! Wish you hadn't posted it Adi. I feel very nervous & down after going through it. Hope I'm not haunted by these thoughts rather I can recall them as warning before every ride.

But its a MUST read for all the people who think they're next Rossi or for that matter for even everyone who drives a car as how a post accident trauma can be.

Just imagine, if it's that painful to just read that experience, how must've she felt while going through it.

My sympathies are with the victim, I wish her a full physical as well as psychological recovery.

Glad to know that people aren't taking this thread as me 'preaching' to ride with gear.

                Thank you brother.

What's sad is today riders even after having invested a good amount in riding gear, don't wear it that often. I mean if a crash were to happen only when one is going for a sunday ride and the chances of being in an accident while commuting to the office on a wednesday were nill, then the rule of wearing gear only on sunday would apply. Sadly that's not the case, but most of the riders are ignorant about that.

Oh and I'm not talking about the average joe on the street riding a battered down bike. This is the attitude of 'RIDERS' who are associated with biking groups, who go for sunday rides, some of them are even xbhpians.

My wife found this story and it compelled me to post it here. You have the right not to ware the gear but are you willing to go trough what this little lady did if you drop a bike at a high speed?

Parth & Adi, indeed there're several ppl who make fun of my back at office & I'm fully aware of it, forget alone the road. There're several critics that would arise, ridiculous eyes especially on seeing gloves, jacket & riding pants but on an Activa. They might even think, "idhu overa illa" (means, does someone really need a riding gear when riding a slow moving Activa). It pains!!! It really pained when one of our Sr manager commented saying "Ok yaar you wear this, but ensure that you don't fall" & I precisely knew it was a sarcastic comment. End of the day, someone who's browsing this forum for sometime will know what this all means. This one incident is really scary; what made up this scary is because, the writer has undergone the pain & has expressed the real pain of what she's undergone.

I once knew a guy who was sitting behind another colleague on a two-wheeler met with an accident. The rider got a safe escape, but my friend who was on pillion got out of bed after 6+ months. He used to throw up for no reason most of the times in office. He was an average built before accident & had become almost the size of pencil after it.

If you can associate what accident means, this is probably one of the earliest incident that instilled fear in me as accident is much more than what one thinks. People MAY not return to normal life after every accident!!!

Like Adi says, even if I don't have money, one should always wait to buy the one they love, so that they feel like wearing it. I remember reading the Riding Gears thread after several months I joined this forum. But then I got struck with the reality that they're expensive & couldn't afford for one right away. But then I waited patiently, looked for all the options & which one would be safe as well as look fine. Finally when I bought one, its for sure a head turner & I also love wearing it. So it has become more than protective wear for me now. The riding pants also helps me wear light colored trousers to office without getting dirty

That's scarey, I still don't understand why the most basic protection of a helmet is pretty much shunned over here, it's really a no brainer, I have seen many accidents, with bikes, scooters and cars over the past few weeks, often seeing the rider and pillion lying on the road in a pool of blood, still they won't change!

Riding gears do save lives, I recall in 1981/1982 my dad had an accident with a bike, it was a hot summer day in the Uk, a Sunday morning around 11am, my dad was pulling out of a petrol pump on a 4 lane highway in our old car (named shitfire) the roads were quiet, infact almost no traffic at all, my dad was driving forward to turn right and continue on the opposite lanes, he stopped at the exit took a look to the right, all clear and a glance to the left, no probs, then a second look to the right, again all clear, to he proceed forward, then baaam, impact on the front wing, the bike flies across all 4 lane of the highway and a little extra, bounces of the roof of a parked AA van (automobile association) rider was still on the bike and they landed in a field, the rider was wearing full racing leathers and helmet, the bike was travelling at around 140mph (Over 220kmph) I'm sure you all can imagine at that speed you are just eating up the road, the visibility from where my dad was situated was around 600 metres, the heat haze was high on the tarmac. Anyway the fellow survived, at a cost though, 8 months in hospital and over 30 broken bones, no skin lacerations and only minor internal bruising, my dad escaped injury fortunatly, he had visited the rider almost everday whilst he was in hospital, shitfire was no more. On a cloudy day my dad would probably have seen the guy dispite travelling at double the speed limit, he had good reflexes and experience, previously he was a captain for IA, though retired at the time he was still pretty sharp.

That was quite a painful read. Really feel sorry for her. Gotta admit I'm shit scared now to sit on the pillion seat.

I had a freak accident a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't wearing any gear except for the helmet. (Actually I don't have any gear, and can't afford one yet). Outcome - 13 stitches on my face and some scratches on my arm. A good gear could've saved the skin loss on my arm. Maybe the helmet was faulty. The helmet's visor broke and pierced into my face, above and below my eye. Surely, nothing compared to what the girl went through.

Yes, it was a full face one. something like and was buckled up too. Thought it was just a crappy helmet until it fell from a big wall one day. Landed hard and made a huge sound but had no problems. It was some VOLGA made. searched their site but couldn't find the exact model. maybe it was dupe has an ISI logo but i'm not gonna judge on that.
Anyway, now the helmet is still there in good condition, with a piece from its visor missing, and a few scratches on the back.
