i have done about 10,800 kms or so in the last 2.2 years of my R15. The issue is not with the bike lying idle. It is if you run it on too low a fuel level, too frequently. That causes the muck, dirt and other settled impurities in the tank to get sucked into the pump.

Solution - To keep a higher than half tank fuel level, even if the bike is parked. My bike has been parked for weeks with no issues with starting, idling or the fuel pump. Just keep and ride it at a higher fuel level always.

I remember seeing a similar issue with R15s owned by college kids, they would generally run the bike on reserve or very close to reserve, and the fuel pump would go bad soon.

Now, I am pretty seriously pissed off, esp with the reasoning for pump getting messed up. It is is a race bike (have another for street), has some 5000km on the odo in 2.5 years with last year seeing around 1000km. Agree thats not a truck load of kms, but that is far from sitting idle too. And anyway, that is not hugely low kms for a race bike, this is exactly how race bikes r supposed to be!

I plan to take the issue back to Yamaha guys and hear what they got to say, but would like to hear if anybody else here has had the same problem. Or if the R15/Yamaha lovers over here got anything to add that I don't know yet...

57,500 Kms done, never touched fuel pump, my baby is running happily here.

Put a mail to yamaha back office and check for solutions, i think they may replace it under warranty.

I feel its the injector which is clogged. Even my bike which ran 5k kms in 2 yr had this issue. It also hiccuped at around 4k rpms and above all the way to the red line. Just cleaned the tank and subjected her to some hi rev riding. Its behaving fine ever since. I am at 11k kms now.

So, did you ask the SVC to clean the injector/throttle body?

Nope, the bike is hardly ever running at low levels of fuel. More than 60% of the 5k has been on the track, including the last two times by a friend (I think he goes here as "footloose"). And the obvious thing for the track is to fill up the tank and then run happily for the next coupla days. The fuel used is BP Speed at minimum, and couple of times a higher octane one.

What does not make sense to me is the dealership saying the only option is replacing the fuel pump. Cannot understand why cleaning the pump/injectors is not the solution for dirt getting sucked in.

may be your friend used low quality fuel. because this is the main reason of fuel pump clogging.

ALso , there was a word from the ASS Guys that there is a Fuel pump change coming soon for all the R15 after the Radiator , plastics :-)..
Hope u get urs FOC

Been 40+k and No issues with injectors , I keep using Fuel Injector cleaner once in a while .

I am running through the same issue. My Car mechanic next door showed me how he replaces only the pump for cars like Honda City for as little as Rs 1200 instead of the whole assembly for Rs 8500. However I scoured the market for a pump that would fit the R15 assembly but could not find one suitable.

My pump dies and starts intermittently and left me stranded twice midway requiring a "bike tow" home on one occasion and an intensive manual push home on the other. It would then restart the next day.

If it hasn't been more than 2 years since you've bought the bike, the SVC guys should replace it ! I had the hiccup issue abobe 7k RPM. Called up the official Yamaha engineer to inspct the bike,and he replaced the fuel-pump(2 year mechanical part warranty).
