  • Coverting Pulsar 220 Fuel Injection to Carburetor

    Hi,

I've been having a lot of problems with my 2008 220Fi it has done about 28000 Kms.

In the last 7 months I have had to Tow it 4 Times to the service center which in all cost me 2200 bucks only for Towing + the Service Center Charges.

The Problem it the bike runs perfectly then suddenly gives some jerks shuts off then i cannot get it to start again. I remove the spark plug cable & check there is no current. then i fiddle around with the wires. remove fuses & reconnect, remove relays & what not blow on it & then connect again... which sometimes get the bike going again. & Sometimes it doesn't & i have to then take it back to the service center.

I've changed the complete wiring kit for the bike... the alternators or what ever they call it, that provides current to the engine & the battery was also change with the complete kit as well. there is nothing extra I've put on the bike.. there no Led's or Hid's it runs everything on stock except for a few stickers

Other than this problem the Bike is PERFECT. Gives me an average of 42 which is amazing... I don't know any 220 user who told me they get such an average.

So Last Night the same thing happened, I was driving at around 40, only drove that day for around 6 kms.. when i was heading back home the bike started giving jerks & when i accelerated it was acting as if it was out of fuel... but there was ateast about 500 bucks worth of fuel in it...

I stopped at side... there was a mechanic (autorickshaw repairer) nearby, asked him for a screwdriver... I removed the Fuel filter & check there wasn't anything blocking... the filter was clear...checked the fuel flow was OK. so put it back in & tried to start it, but it wont fire. so checked for sparks & there wasn't any. again followed the same routine. but nothing i did started the bike. so finally at 7 pm i Gave up & called a Tempo service... Loaded the bike on it with the help of a mechanic... called the Service center Manager at Amboli & told him the scenario.. he told me to give him a call again when i reach the center as the security guards wont let the bike in unless he tells so.

So I let the bike at the center with my contact number & keys... They called me in the morning, told me I don't need to come... & they will create the Job Card & let me know the progress..

Ok so after this long background & history I want to know if there is any way i can remove the FI system from the Bike & convert it to a normal Carb version? & How much would I have to shell out? I really don't want to sell the bike as there is no demand for it & i'll have to let it go for a very less price + i will be buying the new 220 anyways.. so instead if i can convert this to carb version that would be awesome..

Please let me know if someone has done this before.

did you get the stator coil changed at any point? I faced the same problem with my 220 FI. Apparently there was some problem with the short-circuit in the wiring which got the stator coil busted. got it replaced twice and the bike has been fine ever since.

List of things that was changed.

      Relay Inter L
      Sensor - Roll
      Wiring Harnes
      Switch CL Wit
      Switch Assembly
      Key - WoodRuff
      Rotor Assembly
      Stator Assembly
      Coller - STA

So yes Stator & rotor assembly was changed both combined cost me Rs 1400.

Shouldn't this conversion be an easy job, i mean replace the FI with a Carburetor & replace the CDI with the P220F model? or is there something else that i am missing?

Once even i asked same question to my TVS mech about conveting my EFI to Carb one and his reply was it is possible but then you have to buy Carb of P220 and also hose pipes ( even am bit confused about it ) but i think job should be done under 6-8000 Rs. aprox

I doubt there is anything wrong with your EFI system i mean it is still giving you 42kmpl .
Its not enough to know how to twist the throttle; you must have judgement to know when and where to do it.

It seems like an issue with the ignition rather than the FI. Why dont you go to a competent mech - seems like some wire is loose somewhere.

One thing - each time the prob occurs, how does it get resolved?
Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!

yes, please answer this, i was also thinking same thing, will help us locate your problem more easily and correctly.

one thing i wanna say is, it appears your problem is electrical related, then why do you want to change the Fi to carb. there is not much interrelation.

one more thing, do you go to same service center each time you have this problem? if yes, try changing your service center. as they may be making money from you, whereas the problem might be very small.

Hmmm... I was wondering if the CDI had something to do with it. even the Ignition coil was changed i think.. but not sure.

No the "No Current" happened even before i changed the Wiring.... as there was no current i though the Electricals were getting shot somewhere so i ask them to changed the wiring. it worked fine for a few weeks then again started with the problem.

No Mechanic wants to touch this bike... do know any good ones / Specialists in Mumbai?

They never tell me what exactly the problem is, This time i have asked them for a full report on everything they did to troubleshoot the problem.
What works sometimes is a small Clutch Switch relay near the battery box. if I banged it a few times it use to start up. also this piece get hot not too hot though, can any P220FI owner confirm that the Clutch Switch relay gets hot or not?
This is How it looks like it will be near the battery box.

The reason i thought switching to Carb would help is because when i change the CDI all the sensors (atleast most of them) will be rendered useless as they wont have any function once i switch to carb so it should be a problem free ride.

Yes i Go to the same service center, its the nearest one & its a good one... I don't know any nearby, if my bike is running i would go & get it serviced from there but its a problem when its not functioning at all.

I called the center today & they said they are working on my bike... thats all they said nothing else except "we'll contact you when its ready."

^^ it seems your service center is hiding information from you. find another service center immediately and next time your bike has similar problem, visit a different service center. if only you would have been in pune, i could have suggested you the gem of a mechanic.

but i am telling you man............its time to change your service center.

How Much Should i expect for this bike? Its in pretty good condition regardless of this problem. I am thinking i should just sell it off.

Its been a week now, I am busy working, but still worried about my baby pulsar 220Fi.

I've got no calls from them, I even contacted Bajaj Customer Support, they created a Request number CR- 72263, Got a call from Bajaj asked me the problem, i explained the problem, He asks Where is the bike now? I told him its in the Amboli Service Center, He says I'll get back to you, and haven't heard anything from him since I got this call on Thursday .

Brother where do u stay? And could u tell me wich year is ur bike?

Now I just wanted to tell you if you keen on getting your bike converted then let me tell you its a successful work. Have seen so many fi version converted in my locality. From 220 to apache both fi were transformed into carburettor one. And I remember my friend getting 220 carb from chor bazar. Excellent in condition and it costed him just 800rs so now you have to decide what you want to do. And apart from that if you can come to south mumbai my trusted mechanic could solve your fi problem without even converting it. So you decide what you want. And if you ask me I would suggest you to show to this mechanic once his charges are extremely low am not here to promote him but I have seen the work he does so hence recommending
