  • The 2009 ZX6R

    Hey,

Got the bike out (FINALLY) 3 weeks back. Have around 2100 kms on it now. The mods so far I have are a two-brothers slip-on exhaust (reduced bike weight by approximately 8 kgs), Corbin seat, RAM GPS mount+touratech GPS charger. I am still waiting for my fender eliminator and goPro HD camera. Couple of pics are attached to this post, more once I get my goPro camera.

Currently I live in Wisconsin, USA. Ride safe, later.

                  Thx. guys.

@ kinshuk.arya: my gropro camera (along with my fender eliminator) is on back order. Once I get my camera, definitely videos on YouTube.

@ Carlitos: winter is technically over here BUT we have had a very cold spell this week. Take a look at the attached pic. to see what I mean .

Any guesses as to what make the three bikes are? Looking "in" to the picture, the make of the bike on the left is easy to guess, the right-most one requires a little bit of work.

                  Ride safe, later.

even without the snow id have a tough time guessing the 3rd bike looks archaic. maybe an older ninja?

Yup, the 3rd bike is a 1987 Yamaha FZR 750. A classic bike in all respects but very temperamental. The left most bike is an R6. Interestingly, the middle bike is also a Yamaha, an FZ1.

Actually I could give a review of the bike.

                        1. Overall comfort: The bike's comfort compares to two other supersports I have ridden, the 2009 Triumph Daytona 675 and the 2008 CBR600RR (I owned this bike). Comparing to a 1999 Ducati 748 I rode, the ZX is much more comfortable (the Ducati is pretty aggressive). HOWEVER, I strongly feel that the use of a custom seat is a must, especially for long rides. I use a Corbin seat:

Corbin Motorcycle Seats & Accessories | Cool Motorcycle Stuff since 1968 | 800-538-7035

I had a custom seat from a local dude for the CBR, it was not as comfortable as the Corbin seat. Although I did manage to clock 1290 kms/day (14-hour ride, with stops in between only for gas) on the CBR with the custom seat, I would have preferred Corbin.

                        2. Engine: The engine redlines at approximately 17,000 RPM, maxes out at 20,000 RPM (see pic. below). The torque delivery on this bike is definitely not linear (unlike the CBR and the Triumph, very similar to the 748). That is, you notice a definite "jump" in the bike acceleration between 9000 and 10000 RPM in first gear. It is a surreal and fun experience, IF you are trained to anticipate it .

The engine is four-stroke, four-cylinder. The engine compression ratio is approx. 13.3:1. The "insane" compression ratio means I can hit 130 km/h in second gear before redline at 17,000 RPM.

                        3. Speaking of dash, the bike does come with a gear indicator which I never use . There is a shift indicator but that is also not useful unless you are on the track. One thing I do miss from the CBR is the lack of a fuel gauge BUT this is no biggie since I can easily keep track of the fuel consumption using my tripmeter.

                        3. Mileage: get approximately 17 km/l (40 mpg), if I am not doing something crazy. Hard acceleration, revving etc. drops the mileage to around 15 km/l.

                        4. Transmission: 6-speed, wet clutch. I haven't mucked around with the gear ratios, probably never will. Upshift and downshift is very smooth.

                        5. Mods. added: RAM mount for GPS.

                        6. Mods. to be added: Fender eliminator, Go Pro HD camera, HID lights.

Again I will post more pics. once I get that GoPro camera.

One thing I would like to point out is that the mirrors on this bike SUCK. By that I mean even with all the adjustment, half of the mirror shows my hips . Of course I always turn my head but it would be nice if I don't see my gear in the mirror (the CBR mirror was very nice because I could see blue sky behind me). It might seem like a small thing with the mirrors but it does get to be pretty annoying when your gear takes up half the mirror.

Besides my sticky opinion of the mirror, I am extremely pleased with the bike. I don't have any other particular item to add, if you have specific questions just ask.

                        Ride safe, later.

                          Hey bro,
Congrats for your bike. Really an awesome bike. I love Ninja ZX-6R more than any bike in this category.

I didnt knew that 2009 this model had redline starting from 16K rpm. A sure bunch of power.

                          Ride happily and safe.

                              @Bartman....
Yup i know what you mean. My buddy just moved to some place in Wisconsin for some onsite project for TCS. spoke to him day before and he said, "Dude, i am outside smoking a cig...its freaking snowing here" LOL
You seem to have a lot of experience with these bikes, so yeah just stay safe out there in the wet and damp weather. Cold tires can be a problem with grip and traction.

Anyway, thanks for the info on the bike, i wasn't aware of the 17K redline on the 09+ZX6R. I thought the R6 had the highest redline at 16.5K. Sure is fun to hear a bike howl at such high revs.
