Wearing helmet IS compulsory in Pune but normally no action is taken.Originally posted by Rony View Post
Wearing a helmet is not compulsory in Pune and no proactive action is taken in terms of fining people for not wearing helmets. But when caught violating other traffic norms, like jumping a signal etc, the traffic department of the Pune police levies a fine of Rs 100 in addition to other charges.

The problem in pune is abundance of the college crowd... Is not that all are not concerned with safety but most dont use it because of very short commuting distances.. Most do not feel the need to wear an helmet if they are going just round a corner to a nearby tapri. They do not realise that it does not take a zillion kmph speed to cause a fatal accident. Most are under the impression that riding slow will solve the problem. However, they dont realise that it takes just one fool on the wrong side of the road to cause them to swerve to the wrong side and greet the headon traffic...
Then comes the HEY, I OWN THIS BIKE. LOOK AT ME!!!
Before i forget, we also have the LOOK, I AM THE HE(-ER-) MAN.
And, how can we forget the ever present flirt who uses bikes as tools to attract the opposite sex.
These are just some of the reasons There are many more personal reasons as to why they prefer hell-met than a helmet.
Whatever it is, Unless someone forces them to wear a helmet, they wont wear it. I strongly support the imposing fine part, but if sense is not present, these people will wreck havoc where ever they go.. So such rides are really a very good initiative for promoting the use of helmets...
Good initiative -to whoever who took it
