  • Mumbai to Delhi on Ninja 250R

Hey Guys, planning to do a Mumbai-Delhi (and back) tour on my Ninja, could use some inputs from people who've done the route before + people who've done tours on the Ninja.

The xbhp mag has me hooked to making a Leh trip, but I want to do a long tour on plains before i head out to the hills.

    1. Best route? Was planning on Mumbai - Ahmedabad - Udaipur - Chittorgarh - Kishangarh - Jaipur - Delhi. The other option is to move to Ajmer from Udaipur.
For the return, was planning on coming back via Indore (Delhi - Agra- Gwalior - Indore - Mumbai). Have heard this route is more scenic. Seen a number of reviews by people doing this on a car, but very few on bikes. Do these routes have patches where bikes aren't allowed?

    2. Plan to do the journey in 3 days. Drive only at nights and mornings to escape the summer sun. Is that recommended? Or am i better off braving the sun.

    3. Ninja specific : For people who've done tours on Ninja, any issues? Any spares / tools that should be kept in mind.

    4. Anything else i should keep in mind, this being my first really long tour, have done only 300km journeys so far.

    Cheers

although not for the return, but I can certainly help you with the Mumbai-Delhi stretch as I did this recently on the GQ ride.

To start with, the route that you've selected is actually the perfect one. I would say not to take he Ajmer route and continue via GVK expressway to Jaipur and then to Delhi.

The roads conditions are not in pristine condition, however, there are many stretches where you can rip the 250cc baby. It took me a life to get out of Mumbai. Despite of the road being wide, there is a heavy traffic jam and you will literally be crawling until you reach Vapi. I'm not aware about the traffic condition during other times of the day, but at around 5ish in the morning, the condition was athetic.

However, as soon as you cross Vapi, you're treated with 6lane road that continue for most of the time. Do not forget the irritating diversions that pop out without a reason. The roads uptill Vadodra are a bliss, however, things get a little spooky after that (pun intended). Make sure you take a left after vadodra and do not take the NE !. Please mind that there is no sign board saying that no bikes allowed on the NE!, neither it says that its the Expressway.

After you cross Vadodra, the road to A'bad is single lane, however, you can maintain a decent pace on that as its almost free of potholes.

Moving forward, you reach Himmatnagar and you hop on to awesome four lane highway, almost free of traffic. So rip it hard. Now that you told about taking NH76 and NH79 via Chittorgarh, I'm assuming that you also know the road conditions...awesome would be a lesser word!

And once you cross Jaipur, its a different story all together, under construction highway, heavy traffic jams, pathetic roads (around kotputli) and what not!

And I would say that you break the journey at Udaipur, beautiful place and it lies at almost the center of the delhi Mumbai stretch. Its around 700km from Mumbai.

Rubber stamp champ has mentioned it right. Stop at Udaipur. From udaipur take the route via Chittorgarh. Very less traffic on that route once you are 20km away from udaipur. It will be blazing fast.

However if you take the Udaipur - Ajmer - Jaipur route.. The route is single lane and scenic.. but once you get close to ajmer.. the road conditions are BAD... with construction going on. If you can sustain this 50km bad part for the scenic route.. then its ok.

I would beg to differ on the Mumbai Vapi part.. Mumbai to Vapi was very good and fast. Yes traffic is medium.. but for a bike it should be OK.

I would not recommend doing everything in night. Start 4-5 in morning. And keep riding till evening say 7-8. That ways you will also get to se around and enjoy the journey. In Night riding you do not enjoy the journey... you are just moving on the road.

@rubber stamp and inflammable : thanks for confirming on the route. good tip about the left at vadodra, will keep my eyes peeled.

@inflammable : was planning to do it mostly at night to beat the heat really. And i think riding under the moonlight is really beautiful as well, made a memorable trip recently to kashid under a full moon.

I actually have to take a pit stop at Ahmedabad to catch up with a friend, so will be attempting to do the Ahd to Delhi stretch in a day, think its doable?

@Abhi : will connect with you before planning the return in detail, the idea of riding through the ghats is exciting.

Any advice on touring essentials? I have the saddle bags, tank bag, tool kit in place. Haven't been able to find a foot pump yet (Both Bachoo and Performance Racing were out). I still need to buy a decent camera for my first travelogue

Ghats between Mumbai and Indore in MP region have been flattened. The 4 laning has converted them into flat pavements.:P But, you will find ghats in Gwalior-Shivpuri section.

Carry a comprehensive first aid kit, a puncture repair kit and lots of oral supplements such as Gatorade or Electral. Also remember to carry the ninja tool kit along with you.

                Gear up and ride safe.

And as for the Ahmedabad-Delhi Stretch, its perfectly doable in a day. I did it in around 10 hours during the Saddle Sore ride. But mind the words Saddle Sore. You might not like to race against time as I did.

However, I would advise you that you leave at around 4am so as to beat the heat in Rajasthan and reach Delhi by evening.

                    Just FYI ...
It may take a little more time between vadodara & surat as there is a bridge near ankleshwar on which only single lane traffic is allowed due to some repair works. ( read in newspaper some days ago ). if the traffic jam is more there it can be really time consuming and pathetic. Yesterday a friend who wished to take flight from ahmedabad started from surat @ 1pm and reached on 6pm till vadodara only. Needless to say his flight was missed. ...

Good Luck & Happy Journey for your trip

P.S.: If you want any help from Vadodara, snacks or any help please you can contact me. Give a pm and I will send you my contact number.

as i'm from Udaipur i strongly suggest that do not take route from udaipur to ajmer as this route is somewhere single or double and road condition is not gud and also you will find heavy traffic on it.
from mumbai to delhi its full 4 lane road, if u take express way from vadodara to ahmedabad you can cover it in 90 to 110 min. plus while reaching ahmedabd u dont have to enter in to city there is a diversion after Toll plaza that will directly come on udaipur road and ahemdabad to udaipur road is superb and 260 k.m., udaipur to chittorgarh 120 k.m., chittorgarh to jaipur via kishangarh 300 k.m.

                          2) As some member already suggest you dont ride in night, start your journey in early morning @4-5

                          3) service station for ninja in mid way is Ahmedabad and jaipur

                            ^^^

Two wheelers are not allowed on the Vadodra-A'bad expressway. Hence he will have to take the NH8.

And you dont need to start early from mumbai as the distance for the first day would be only around 500km (or not even that) unless you want to spend some good time in A'bad

Thanks Aditya. Know where can i get the puncture repair kit in Mumbai? The few shops i knew don't seem to have it (Bachoo and Performance Racing) On the tool kit, is the Ninja tool kit sufficient? Also, I got the Leo Vince exhaust installed last week. While it sounds great, i don't seem to be getting the same power in the lower rpms. Any idea what could be wrong?

thanks, bikes not allowed on expressway so will stick to NH8. First halt planned at Ahmedabad given i've spent a couple years studying there.
V useful info about the service stations, hopefully won't need to use them. Will get the bike service in delhi before heading back.

The plan as of now is to leave 26th early morn and reach Ahd by early afternoon. Spend a day there and leave on 28th very early (3am), reach delhi by early eve.
