  • [Photo Feature]: SOLO trip to Kurseong - the Land of the White Orchids & Darjeeling.

Sometimes I feel that riding a bike, must be some kind of addiction. Now a days I am not usig the bike for commuting purpose, as I have kept my bike for touring purpose only. So, at the week-end, I found a strong urge to feel the vives of the engine.
So, I have decided on Thursday that I would go for a ride on Friday-Saturday-Sunday. So, I have got three days, but where to go? After googling I found that Kurseong, west bengal would be a great place to explore.
The initial planning was to ride Kolkata to Kurseong, which is approximately 638km, in a day - on Friday. On Saturday, I would explore the surroundings of Kurseong and on Sunday I would come back. But the plan changed a bit when I reached Darjeeling(just 30KM from Kurseong) via another beautiful place, Ghoom. As it was raining hard, I was not able to click good number of pics.

Here is the teaser pic. Stay tuned...............!

    Move on.........

"from siliguri towards burdwan road suddenly took a right turn and the mile stone said darjeeling-118kms. toy train line in the side and deep green jungle.my fellow rider warned me of elephants. had my first fall from the bike while negotiating through the neverending criss crossing of trian lines to the road.still smiling.wonder how brits made this road and train s back in that time?light drizzle, cold, visibility none, still no worries".......

dammn bappa you reminded me the good old days, back in 2005.

Wasn't aware of the fact that you had a female riding partner !!!
By the way, Doc you really do seem to have access to a satisfactory life.

On 5th, I have already decided that I need a ride and it should be a big one. I have applied for a leave on Friday. I have googled and found that at Makaibari Tea Estate - Kurseong, they have a provision of keeping gusts. Had a talk with the concerned person over there and managed to book one room there.

As my destination was Kurseong, I did not want to waste time anymore to reach Siliguri. From Siliguri, I had two options to reach Kurseong – by Pankhabari Road or by Hill Cart Road from Siliguri.
So, in the morning of 6th, I was all set to roll. As I always keep my bike ready for long ride anytime, I was very much sure that it can make it. I left home at 5 am and took the NH34 and enjoying every bit of it except small stretches of bad roads. It seemed that the golden yellow light of the Sun is welcoming me to the north Bengal. Since, I have spend my childhood and most of adulthood in Maldah, I am having a soft corner for North Bengal. I was cruising in steady speed of 75-80kmph and enjoying the morning breeze. I crossed Krishanagar, Berhampore and reached Maldah at 11:00 am. After taking a butt break of 10 mins, I started rolling for Siliguri. I was continuously checking if the engine is getting over heated, but I found the heat range is quite stable and the performance of the bike too. I was in a hurry as I wanted to reach Siliguri before 4 pm, so I can make my way for the hills at the day light. From Dalkhola, I hit the NH 31, it was a nice smooth tarmac to ride on it. The road from Bagdogra to Siliguri is absolutely stunning. I decided to ride at 40 kmph and enjoy the beauty of the road surrounded by tea garden, though I was getting late.

Finally I reached Siliguri at 4:30 pm and decided to move forward to Kurseong. In the meanwhile, I had a talk with the person responsible for stay arrangements at Kurseong. I was decided to climb up via Hill Cart Road, but some well-wisher misguided me and led me to the Pankhabari Road. Pankhabari Road is 6 feet road, without any guard rail and hard enough to climb for a first time hill climber like me. Initially I had some trouble in gear shifting, but after few kms I became accustomed to the road and started to enjoy every bit of it. Finally at 5:45 I reached Makaibari Tea Estate of Kurseong.

After reaching Kurseong, I took shelter at the home of Ishwar Lama and become his guest for the night. I had a chance to interact with all his family members including a small kid of Ishwar and his mother and wife. I felt the warmth, like I am in my home. I had a chat with Ishwar on several issues and that helped me to understand their culture a bit. At the evening, he offered me an alcoholic drink prepared by his mother; they call it rice bear – made from rice. Though I am a non-alcoholic person(most of the time though), I tested it and after that I had a dinner with roties and bhajis.

See the temperatyre inside the house.

                            Went to sleep early.
Thats the end of the day.

                              On 7th.

I have requested Ishwar to join me for breakfast........

Very surprisingly, I found one small football ground in that locality...

I was prepared myself for a whole day ride and exploring the town, so I informed Ishwar that I would not take lunch with him.
I took my bike from the parking.......

My primary destination was this...... the heighest point of the town.....

I have started rolling, it was 6 in the morning. Found the skyline.....

I roamed around the town, Kurseong(I got all the details from Ishwar, my host) and tried to understand the people there.
The another part of the town.......

                              The road..........

                              Few random clicks.......

                              The old burial ground........

                              The people are working......

Visited the place called Durbindari and the name of the point is Eagles Point. But the cloud has already started to engulf the whole area.

                              The communication towers......

                              See my bike?

                              The down hill........

                              Beautiful flowers......

                              The watch tower.

                              The skyline.....

Guess what? ..... water supply pipeline.........

                              The Kurseong TV Tower.....

Coming up with the rest shortly.
                              Move on.........
