  • Driving License lost, How to get a new one?

    Hi All,

I had lost my DL around 1.5 yrs, and I want to get a new one. I currently only have a copy (color zerox) of the Original DL and that's what I've been using from past 1.5 year. I haven't faced any problems yet. But still, how long I can go with just a zerox copy!

The scenario here is a bit complicated. I had a DL which was issued from Indore RTO in Madhya Pradesh. And now I'm in Bangalore. And I won't be going back to Indore anymore, so I cannot apply for a duplicate DL there (AFAIK, application for duplicate DL can be made in the same RTO only).
Is applying for a fresh license in Bangalore the only solution? Also, I've heard that it's illegal to have two valid licenses (my lost DL is still valid, though I don't have the original with me). And actually, I don't wanna go through all the process as well.

What option do I have now? Is there a way that I can get a DL in Bangalore without going through all the process and get the other one cancelled?

    Appreciate your opinion/suggestions/help.

Did you get an FIR made out against the lost DL ?

If you haven't, get one made out now, have the old one nullified and apply for a fresh one in Bangalore. Keep the RTO's endorsement of the cancellation of the 1st DL always.
Lets just hope your original DL hasn't been upto anything in somebody else's hands !

No, I have not made any FIR for that.

I don't think it has gone to some wrong hands, cuz actually I had lost it in the hands of a traffic police in Coimbatore (was caught for not wearing seat belt in car). He might've sent it to the Indore RTO or to the address mentioned on the driving license. But no one stays in that address.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestion. Is this the only solution?

FIR for a lost DL is mandatory Sudeep no matter it is right or wrong hands.

When i lost my dl here in Bangalore the first thing i did was file an FIR in the police station. Take a duplicate dl application form and fill it up and you should know your driving license number and fill it in the form and submit to the RTO. They take information from their database and provide a duplicate driving license. Since your driving license is not from bangalore i am not sure if you can get a duplicate done here.

Thanks Aargee! I'll get an FIR registered.

Yes, that's my problem. I guess, I'll definitely have to apply for a new one in that case.

^^^ let me get this straight... on one side you are saying you lost your driving license... on the other hand you are saying that it is in the hands of the Coimbatore traffic police... so which is true??? if the second is true then you have not 'lost' your license, you have had your license confiscated... if the license has been confiscated and you file a FIR for lost license then you committing a illegal act...

Also if your license is in the hands of Coimbatore traffic police, it means that you were involved in some traffic violation... if that is the case, your license has been now attached to a traffic violation legal case in court which may have been decided in absentia (since you have not taken the trouble of going to the court and clearing the violation)... the validity and status of your driving license is doubtful...

Well, its not confiscated. It's a bit complicated. I'll try explaining it in short.

I was coming to Karnataka, from Kerala, through Tamil Nadu with a Maharashtra registered car. I was caught for not wearing a selt belt. And when we were asked for papers, we found that the insurance papers were expired a week back. So because of all these combination of errors, the traffic police was charging a huge amount. So me and my friends, we were discussing him these things for more than an hour. And finally we paid some fine. But in all this time, I totally forgot that I had given my original license in his hands. I realized about it only once I reached Bangalore.

yours is definitely a sorry state of affairs..really..i too am a seasoned 'forgettor'..i've forgotten a lot of stuff in a lot of different places..but yours wins the cake..forgot your license in a different STATE..
today I'm going through all the 'lost my papers' type of threads that i can find to help people out of this common misery..
                    1st thing- F I R..
Now, on to the main thing..there's a service of document management that has recently started in India..i've started using it and am suggesting it to everyone..you submit your important documents (not just your vehicle papers
) with the company and they'll digitize them and you can then view and send digital copies of those through the internet using a unique password that you'd be provided with. Also, you can get your papers back if you want..they deliver them to your place on your request.
The name of the company is kleeto..and they are the only ones providing this service. Check them out. And i'd suggest anybody reading this thread to try it.
And good luck Sudeep..and happy journey..you'd probably be having another trip to Tamil Nadu now..

1st question, when is your licence expiring?
My dad's case is pretty much similar to yours... a lil bit more complicated actually :P
Neways, if your lisence is expiring in a couple of months are something... just wait for it to expire and then apply for a new one in bangalore... or else go to a police station and tell them you lost your licence somewhere... DO NOT TELL THEM THAT YOU LEFT IT IN THE HANDS OF SOME PERSON... JUST TELL THEM YOU MISPLACED IT SOMEWHERE AND DONT REMEMBER WHERE YOU LIST IT.
Once you write the fir you can apply for a new one.

Thanks Saipranav for replying. The expiry date is still close to 17 yrs away. So the one solution now is to register an F.I.R and then apply for a new one.
                        Would be doing that now.

I dont think you will get a new one, upon producing the FIR, the RTO will issue a Duplicate DL and since your DL is from Indore, you will have to go there to get your DL.

If you want it from Bangalore, you might have to start Fresh. check here for more Transport Department -> RTO Services

If you are applying fresh, you might not need FIR.
